Goats In Trees !Goats in trees is the 9th track from Foster the People’s new album Supermodel. It

is a lovely little acoustic driven tune that turned out to be quite interesting to play

to the record. In this PDF I have provided the original parts as played on the

accompanying video, as well as some simpler chords you can play if you wish.

!I usually pick songs for youtube to meet my own devious motives, be it that I think

it will help a certain element of your technique, show you a fantastic guitarists

approach to using a certain scale or chord progression, or sometimes simply that I

like the song! This time however it was a request from youtube so it meets none of

those criteria and that makes it harder to write a nice fact filled intro for you. I have

to get some facts in so you will have to make do with this little gem:

!The Argan tree, indigenous to Morocco and Algeria,

grows to 10 metres high and lives to 200 years old. It

provides a highly valuable oil used in cosmetics but this

has created an interesting problem. The wealth brought

in from selling the oil is mostly spent by the locals on

Goats which then climb the trees to feast on the tasty

fruit. This in turn stunts the trees growth and in turn kills

off the trees that helped buy the goats in the first place.

TUNING !Although you can play the whole song with straightforward chords interestingly it

seems the original is in Drop D tuning and uses some quirky shapes. Drop D is

probably the most common alternate tuning you will come across and its really

straightforward: simply detune the thick string a tone to the note D. I’m assuming

most of you are already familiar with it but if not your best bet is to ask someone

for help, watch a tutorial, or use an electronic tuner (recommended).

!!VERSE !The chord progression for the verse is as follows:

Strumming Pattern

!The song is played with a swing feel and an accent on the

‘backbeat’ (beats 2 and 4) the strumming pattern is as follows:
