PASTOR’S MESSAGE…. REV. DEMETRIOS N. CALOGREDES Presvytera Hresanthe (Terry) Calogredes June 8 th 1951 – March 1 st 2017 Our beloved Presvytera Terry Calogredes was born in Trenton, New Jersey on June 8, 1951 to Steve Litsas and Martha (Bogiatzis) Litsas. She grew up in Wrightstown, New Jersey where she attended her elementary school. She graduated from Saint Mary’s Hall, Burlington, New Jersey. Afterwards she attended Katherine Gibs Secretarial School. In 1970, the family went to Greece where she attended and graduated from Pierce College in Athens. In 1973, the family returned to the United States and Presvytera attended Hunter College where she received her degree in Early Childhood Education. While attending Hunter, she also worked at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in Manhattan as secretary in the department of Laity. It was there that she met the love of her life, Jim Calogredes who was at the Archdiocese on a seminar. They were married on June 29, 1975 at Holy Trinity Cathedral in New York City. On November 23, 1975, Jim was Ordained to the Holy Priesthood and Terry became a Presvytera wife of the Priest. On October 18, 1976 their first born child Kathryn was born while they were at the Transfiguration Church in Corona. On September 15, 1981, they were blessed with 2 boys – Nicholas and Steven, when they were serving the St. John the Divine Church in Wheeling, West Virginia. A Dynamic, Loving, and Dedicated woman, Presvytera Terry organized and ran the Sunday Catechism School program, organized the breakfast with Santa, puppet shows in Wheeling. From 1985 – 1996, Father Jim and Presvytera were in St. George Trenton, New Jersey. Again she ran the Sunday Catechism School and Chaired the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival. In 1996, they came to St. Nicholas Shrine in West Babylon, New York. At St. Nicholas she taught Catechism Classes, Chaired the oratorical Festival, and organized the Greek Bakaliko stand at the Greek Festival. From 2004 – 2008 Presvytera was President of the DAD Presvyteres Sisterhood. Always energetic and filled with great ideas, she organized Christmas and New Year Dinners for the Priests and Presvyteres, Picnics at Long Island Parks, and Barbeques. She was a mentor to the Presvyteres, especially the younger ones, counseling them with their marital problems, consoling them in their medical situations, and advis ing in their children’s concerns. Creating bonds of Love, Compassion, and Good Fellowship among the Presvyteres was very important to her. The year 2008 arrived and they found themselves at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Pictur- esque Port Jefferson, Long Island, New York. There she helped resurrect the old Educational & Cultural Committee with religious and medical lectures, Dickens Festival, Bakalika Booths at the Greek Festival, Pot Luck Dinners, and the unforgettable Apokreatiko Glendi! Presvytera Hresanthe (Terry) Calogredes

June 8th 1951 – March 1st 2017

Our beloved Presvytera Terry Calogredes was born in Trenton, New

Jersey on June 8, 1951 to Steve Litsas and Martha (Bogiatzis) Litsas.

She grew up in Wrightstown, New Jersey where she attended her elementary school. She graduated from

Saint Mary’s Hall, Burlington, New Jersey. Afterwards she attended Katherine Gibs Secretarial School. In

1970, the family went to Greece where she attended and graduated from Pierce College in Athens. In 1973,

the family returned to the United States and Presvytera attended Hunter College where she received her

In 2007 she received her Master’s Degree in Literacy K – 12 from Hofstra University and later taught in

Elementary Schools.

Presvytera Terry will always be remembered by her Captivating Smile, a Genuine Love for People, and

her Zest for Life. May Others Follow Her Example

ΠΡΕΣΒΥΤΕΡΑ ΧΡΥΣΑΝΘΗ ΚΑΛΟΓΡΙΔΗ

8 Ιουνίου 1951 – 1 Μαρτίου 2017

Ή πολυαγαπημένη μας Πρεσβυτέρα Χρυσάνθη Καλογρίδη γεννήθηκε στις 8 Ιουνίου 1951 στο

Τρέντον, Νέας Ιερσέης απο γονείς Σταύρο Λίτσα και Μάρθα Μπογιατζή. Μεγάλωσε στη πόλη

Wrightstown, NJ όπου παρακολούθησε μαθήματα του δημοτικού σχολείου. Αποφοίτησε απο το St.

Mary’s Hall Λύκειο του Burlington, N.J. και ύστερα πήγε στο Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. Κατά

το 1970 πήγε μαζί με την οικογένεια της στην Ελλάδα. Στην Ελλάδα, παρακολούθησε μαθήματα στο

Pierce College της Αθήνας και αποφοίτησε το 1973. Κατά το 1973, η οικογένεια γύρισε στην Αμερική

και η Χρυσάνθη επήγε στο Hunter College όπου τελείωσε με πτυχίο του Early Childhood Education.

Όταν ήταν στο Hunter δούλευε στην Ιεράν Αρχιεπισκοπή Βορείου και Νοτίου Αμερικής ως

γραμματέας του Τμήματος Λαικού. Εκεί εγνώρισε τον άντρα των ονείρων της, τον Δημήτρη

Καλογρίδη όταν είχε έλθει στην Αρχιεπισκοπή για σεμινάριο που κάθε χρόνο οργανώνει η

Θεολογική Σχολή του Τίμιου Σταυρού, Βοστώνης. Ό Δημήτρης και η Χρύσανθη αγαπήθηκαν και στις

29 Ιουνίου 1975 παντρεύτηκαν στο Ιερό Καθεδρικό Ναό τής Άγιας Τριάδος στην Νέα Υόρκη.

Στις 23 Νοεμβρίου του 1975 ό Δημήτριος Χειροτονήθηκε Ιερέας και η Χρυσάνθη έγινε Πρεσβυτέρα –

πιστή και αφοσιωμένη σύντροφος του Ιερέως. Ό Πατήρ Δημήτριος διορίστηκε βοηθός Ιερέας στην

κοινότητα της Μεταμορφώσεως του Σωτήρος στην Κορώνα της Νέας Υόρκης κατα το 1975 και στις 18

Οκτωβρίου 1976 ό Θεός τους ευλόγησε με το πρώτο παιδί τους τη χαριτωμένη Κατερίνα. Στις 15

Σεπτεμβρίου το 1981 γέννησε τα δίδυμα αγοράκια τους – τον Νικόλαο και Στάυρο, όταν

υπηρετούσαν στην εκκλησία του Αγιου Ιωάννου του Θεολόγου στο Wheeling, West Virginia.

Πάντοτε δυναμική και προσηλωμένη στο καθήκον της ή Πρεσβυτέρα διεύθυνε το Κατηχητικό

Σχολείο, οργάνωσε το πρόγραμμα των Χριστουγέννων με τον Άγιο Βασίλη, και πολλά παιδικά

προγράμματα στον Άγιο Ιωάννη. Απο το 1985 – 1996, ήταν στον Άγιο Γεωργίο του Τρέντον όπου η

οικογένεια της εκκλησιαζόταν κατα τα παιδικά της χρόνια. Έκει πάλι διεύθυνε το Κατηχητικό

Σχολείο, οργάνωσε το Φέστιβαλ Ρητορικής και ήταν αρχηγός της Νεολαίας ( GOYA ).

Από το 1996 – 2008, Ό Πατήρ Δημήτριος ήταν Ιερατικώς Προιστάμενος του Άγιου Νικολάου, West

Babylon, NY. Εκεί η Πρεσβυτέρα δίδασκε μαθήματα στο Κατηχητικό Σχολείο, ήταν αρχηγός της

GOYA, επικεφαλής του Φεστιβάλ Ρητορικής, και όργανωσε το Ελληνικό Μπακάλικο στο ετήσιο

Φέστιβαλ.

Από το 2004 – 2008 ή Πρεσβυτέρα ήταν Πρόεδρος των Πρεσβυτερών της Άμεσης Άρχιεπισκοπής

Περιφέρειας ( DAD ). Πάντοτε οπλισμένη με δύναμη και θαυμάσιες ιδέες, οργάνωνε

Χριστουγεννιάτικα και Πρωτοχρονιάτικα δείπνα και διασκεδάσεις για τους Ίερείς και Πρεσβυτέρες,

αξέχαστες εκδρομές και παρέες, και ταξίδια σε ηλιόλουστες παραλίες του Long Island. Ήταν σαν

μεγάλη αδελφή στις αδελφές Πρεσβυτέρες – πάντοτε έδινε καλές συμβούλες σε όλες – ιδιαίτερα στις

νεώτερες Πρεσβυτέρες. Πίστευε ακράδαντα οτι πρέπει να υπάρχει η αγάπη, η κατανόηση, και καλή

επικοινωνία αναμεταξύ των Πρεσβυτεριών.

Έφτασε το 2008 και ό Πατήρ Δημήτριος και ή Πρεσβυτέρα βρέθηκαν στην Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου

του Πόρτ Τζέφερσον του Long Island. Εκεί βοήθησε στην αναδιοργάνωση της Εκπαιδευτικής και

Πολιτιστικής Επιτροπής με Θρησκευτικές, Ιατρικές διαλέξεις και περισυλλογές. Ήταν υπεύθυνη για

τη συμμετοχή της Εκκλησίας στο Dickens Festival του Port Jefferson, οργάνωσε τα δείπνα με διαλέξεις

της Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής, το μπακάλικο στο Φέστιβαλ, και το αξέχαστο Αποκρίατικο Γλέντι

κάθε χρόνο.

Κατα το Μαϊο του 2007, ή Πρεσβυτέρα πήρε το δίπλωμα Master’s Degree in Literacy K – 12 με

μεγάλες τιμές απο το Hofstra University. Υστερα δίδασκε στα δημόσια σχολεία του Long Island.

Πάντοτε θα θυμόμαστε το γλυκό χαμόγελο της, την καλωσύνη της, και προπαντώς την

αξιοθαύμαστη αγάπη για όλους τους ανθρώπους.

Εύχομαι και άλλοι να ακολουθήσουν το παράδειγμα της.

Dear Parishioners:

It is my extreme honor to serve our beloved parish as the new Parish Council President. My family and I

have been a part of this church for almost 30 years! I have served on many committees and boards and

have worked right beside you all at our annual August festival. I look forward to a positive and great year

ahead! On behalf of the entire Parish Council, it is our sincere hope that you will come and visit our Par-

ish, and experience the faith and fullness of our Orthodox Christian worship and fellowship. I look for-

ward to seeing you in church and joining you for some coffee and conversation in our Community Center

after liturgy.

I am grateful to be a part of the 2017 Parish Council and look forward to meeting with you and working

OUR ORGANIZATIONS/COMMITTEES

Greek Independence Day Parade- The Greek Independence Day Parade was on March 26th in New York City. De-

spite the chill in the air, all attendees had a great day celebrating our heritage!

Sunday Catechism School- meets for classes every Sunday in the upper level of the Community Center from 11:15

– 12:00 a.m. Children ages 4-13, grades Pre-K - 8th grade learn about the Greek Orthodox faith & how to apply it to

their everyday life.

It is that time of the year for the Saturday of Lazarus Breakfast & Easter Egg Hunt.

Date & Time: April 8th, 2017 @ 11:00 am.

Breakfast & festivities follow at the Community Center. There will be Palm Cross activities & games as well. There

will be no fee at this event but donations are always appreciated. If you would like to make breakfast donations,

there is a need for orange, cranberry, & apple juice, as well as, non-dairy creamer, water, milk, fresh fruit salad trays,

Jello, Oreos, & non-dairy treats. Please to RSVP Dimitra Dimeck @ 631 451 0570 or Jean Xikis @ 631 732 7976 &

indicate the number of children & adults who will be attending.

GOYA- GOYA members us proud with their presence at the Greek Independence Day Parade!

Greek School- Due to the passing of our Beloved Presvytera, changes will be made to our upcoming annual Inde-

pendence Day Luncheon. The event scheduled for March 19th has been rescheduled & modified for March 28th 2017

during Greek School hours. March 21st will be designated as an instructional make-up day. The program will in-

clude student performances, with the PTO providing coffee, & Lenten desserts at no charge for this event.

Also, please be sure to “Save the Date” for the Greek School Committee “My Big Fat Greek Family Night Out”

Fashion Show on May 13th 2017. It will be an event to remember!

Golden Age- Today it is the yiayia and papou that make up our Golden Age Group and who still care about family

values. The Golden Age Group is a family where we cook, play music, show home videos and tell our stories. We

hope that new faces will join and we welcome all seniors to our group. Golden Age meets every other Thursday af-

ternoon in the community center.

Philoptochos- The Palm Sunday Luncheon will be April 9, 2017 after Divine Liturgy. Philoptochos membership

drive is in full swing. Anyone interested in joining please contact Janet Trohalaki [email protected].

Don’t forget to order your tsourekis from the Ladies Philoptochos. You can place your orders with the ladies before

Easter for either a large tsoureki for $14 or a small tsoureki for $7. For more details, please contact Maria in the

Church Office @ 631 473-0894.

Hope & Joy- There are preliminary plans for a Hope & Joy gathering that will take place on Fridays at approxi-

mately 5. If interested, please email church office @ 473-0894

Rythmos- Hellenic Greek Dance Troupe for ages 7 and up that meets on Friday nights. The dancers compete and

have performed at our church festival. Registration will be in the fall, more information to follow.

Summer Activites to Look Forward To… Assumption Summer Day Camp -Anyone interested in volunteering for the Assumption Greek Orthodox Summer

Assumption Church Festival-Although August seems so far away especially with the cold, wintry mix weather, our

festival will be here before we know it! Anyone interested in volunteering for committees or working during the

festival, please contact the Church Office. Parish festival meetings will start in June!

Godparents’ Day Fun Events

On Sunday, February 5th the Sunday Catechism School celebrated Godparent Sunday. The chil-

dren enjoyed playing Godparent Jeopardy with their Godparents in the Community Center while learning

about Epiphany & the Sacrament of Holy Baptism in a fun & interactive way. We thank everyone who

assisted us with the day’s events & luncheon. Without your support our program could not exist.

As we begin our journey with your children through this Lenten period we shared in the joy of

their beautiful icons that they crafted for the Sunday of Orthodoxy. Together we will witness the joyous

entry of our Lord into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, we will experience His passion, bear witness to His

judgment, crucifixion, and burial. Together we will await & witness His glorious Resurrection in the days

to come. Your children will learn the glorious hymn Christos Anesti/Christ is Risen. Please continue to

bring your children to Sunday Catechism school so that they can continue to learn their faith.

We invite you to join us on Saturday, April 8th for our Annual Saturday of Lazarus Communion

Breakfast & Easter Egg Hunt. Our children will attend the Divine Liturgy in church at 10:00 a.m. then a

light Lenten Breakfast will be served in the Community Center followed by games & the Easter Egg Hunt.

We will also assist the Community in making Palm crosses for Palm Sunday. All are welcomed to attend.

Registration for Camp Saint Paul in Connecticut is well under way! At this Greek Orthodox camp, camp-

ers practice a perfect balance of fellowship, educational and recreational activities, and Orthodox chapel.

Their program has 5 sessions and is fully packed with fun-filled days that allow campers to get the most

out of their time at Camp Saint Paul.
