I do appreciate the confidence you had in me and hope I lived up to your expectations. I have laughed with many of you; as well as cried with some of you. Convention notes!!

1. Auxiliaries and Districts shall be deprived of their vote if any arrearages exist in

accordance with Section 309 or Section 511 of the National Bylaws.

2. Convention Delegate fees must be paid for all Auxiliary Delegates, regardless of

whether or not they attend the Convention.

3. Delegate fees must be paid for all District Presidents, State Officers and PDPs in order

to vote at the Department Convention.

Please Note!

National President Colette Bishop has issued an official ruling on the interpretation of Section 902,

Audio/Video Recording and the final bullet of Section 210 of the National Bylaws: “Before any

Auxiliary member and/or anyone else who may be attending a VFW Auxiliary meeting may

record by any electronic (i.e. smartphone, etc.) means whether audio and/or video must have the

prior consent of the body.” Prior consent of the body would require that a majority of the body present

for that meeting has, in advance by motion made, seconded and passed, approved/disapproved of any

audio/video recording by electronic means.

HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS TO BE A SUCCESSFUL AUXILIARY

May 2017

As the end of the year approaches, there are many things that still need to be done. Be sure to get the

installation warrant from Department Secretary Helen Carter, so the new Auxiliary officers can be

installed prior to the Department Convention in June. The form to request this was in the April

Department mail and can be found on the Department website. Officers cannot be installed without

the warrant giving permission to the installing officer.

TREASURERS ALERT: Just a reminder that applications for

membership and transfers should be sent to Department Treasurer Jeanne

Gilbert immediately after being voted on by the Auxiliary. Treasurers

should never hold onto an application. Doing so is in direct violation of

our National Bylaws. It can prevent a member from being elected to an office,

being installed as an officer, or being eligible for Auxiliary benefits. Dues should also never be held.

It is the responsibility of the Auxiliary Treasurer to submit dues as soon as they are received. And

while it is generally up to the Trustees to set up the date for the quarterly audit, the Treasurer must

have the books prepared and ready for the audit, Sec 814 of the Bylaws gives the dates each audit

covers and the date by which the audit must be sent to the Department Treasurer. For

example, for the quarter ending March 31, Dept. Treasurer Jeanne Gilbert should

receive the audit no later than April 30. And the Auxiliary President should follow

through and make sure the audit is done in the required time frame.

Our National Bylaws and Rituals are not for you to pick and choose which rules you

will follow. We are an organization that has rules that must be followed - by everyone! And even

though some of the Bylaws can be open to interpretation, the majority of them very clearly instruct us

on how to handle the business of the Auxiliary. Read the Bylaws and refer to them often.

Replacing officers – If you feel that you must remove an elected officer during the year,

pay particular attention to Sec. 809B of the National Bylaws. This section explains the

reasons that officers may be removed, and also the procedure for doing so. Note that

such action first requires the approval of the Department President who has received

written documentation of the reason. After approval is given, the officer must be given a

written notice of such proposed action. Only after said approval is given, and such notice is sent to

the officer, the Auxiliary must wait at least seven days for a response, before the Auxiliary can vote

on the removal. We know that this takes time, and when business has to be conducted, this may

become an issue. But a President can request that approval be given for someone be appointed an

“acting” officer until the process is completed. So, BEFORE you take such action, contact the

Department President for guidance.

This year, we are thankful for so much which has been accomplished by our Auxiliaries for members,

youth, veterans, families and communities. As our year is coming to a close, however, the needs will

still be there and our members will continue to serve where and when there is a need.

Monday, May 29 is Memorial Day which is a very important time for United States citizens. This is the

time we are to honor men and women of the armed services who made the ultimate sacrifice and

gave their lives defending democracy and our way of life. Please take time to show your reverence

and remember those who have given their lives while serving.

W Auxiliary Creative Patriotic Art Contest - Entries to Local Auxiliaries by March 31

WOW!!!! That is all I can say about the Patriotic Art I have received at my house. The final winner

has not been selected as of yet but will be in shortly. I can tell you now the decision will be a difficult

one.

As of now I see that we have 185 reports submitted from 65 Auxiliaries across our state for all

programs under Scholarship. Three Districts are 100% at this time; District 7 under Sandra Johnson-

Leu, District 6 Sandra Jeffries and District 15 under Patty Harris. Way to go!

So you can get an early start on Patriot Pen and Voice of Democracy for 2017-2018 the themes will be:

Patriot Pen: America’s Gift to my Generation

VOD: American History: Our Hope for the Future

There will be some new deadlines to meet for next year but we’ll get to that in July.

Thank you for all you have completed within the Scholarship Program. These young Americans are

our future and these programs allow them to display their Patriotism becoming better citizens.

Brothers and Sisters, it has been an honor serving as your Veterans and Family Support Chairman. Thank you for continually serving our Veterans, Active Duty and their families. Your attention to their every need is remarkable.

I must say how AWESOME the NC VFW Auxiliary’s are! I am excited to announce that we succeeded with 100% in reporting and 1,735 reports entered! To top it off 100 Auxiliary’s paid their Health and Happiness contributions out of 101! GREAT work, I am very proud of each of you! It’s extremely humbling to read these reports, as they reflect enormous amounts of care, love and support.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Convention! Keep up the impressive work, it truly makes a difference. Thank you, for your continued dedication to this great organization.

May is National Military Appreciation Month

June 27: National PTSD Awareness Day

Following are some activities to help celebrate!

Loyalty Day: Sponsor a coloring contest for a local pre-school or elementary

school. You can either create a picture for them to color or have them

create their own picture of why they love America. Teach the children

about Loyalty Day. A great book to use might be Red, White, Blue and

Uncle Who? Written by Teresa Bateman. It tells about 17 symbols of

the United States. You may also want to have a Loyalty Day parade with

the students. They could create hats to show their patriotism!

You could also use this idea for Flag Day or Memorial Day. Just use different

pictures. May sure you teach about the holidays!

Memorial Day: Make a display of toy soldiers. Place the soldiers in a fish bowl,

old suitcase, or whatever you have on hand. Ask people to take a toy

soldier and place it somewhere to remind them to pray for our military.

You can place the bowl in your Post or on a display table. (picture on

following page!)

Another activity is listed on the next page. It would be a great one to do for

Military Appreciation Month.

Don’t forget National PTSD Awareness Day. Make ribbons for your members to

wear. The ribbon should be teal!

If you wish to know the specific needs of any individual departments of the VAMC, please always

contact Voluntary Service directly. This ensures that the most urgent needs are addressed first and

the donor or donor organization will be properly credited. Donation forms are available from the

Voluntary Service office to be completed and given to Voluntary Service on 4th floor of the

Hospital staff along with the donations.

Hello, Brothers and Sisters of the VFW Auxiliary. We are coming to the end of another year of

providing services to our Hospitalized and Non-hospitalized Veterans. This also brings me to the end

of another year serving as the VAVS Representative for the VFW Auxiliary and as in years past, it

has been my pleasure to serve. I also say "thank you" to our two deputy VAVS Representatives

Betty Bradsher & Nancy White. Nancy serves as a Volunteer at the Greenville Clinic.

The Voluntary Service Recognition Banquet was held on Monday night April 24th at the Millennium

Hotel in Durham. This was a very nice event in spite of all the hard rain. It gave the Volunteers a

chance to be rewarded for their time & efforts in service to our Veterans. The theme was "Our

Veterans, Our Heroes, Our Mission" and we also celebrated the 70's.

As all of you all are aware, many needs are ongoing at the VA. Some of the needs are as follows:

Hospice\

• There is a great need for blue sweatpants with elastic bottoms and waist sizes L, XL, 2XL

& 4XL

• Men's sneakers size 10 ½, 11 and 11 ½

• K cups coffee regular and decaffeinated for hospice family room in assorted flavors

Food Pantry

• Hormel complete meals any variety including breakfast meals

• Horizon milk (no refrigeration until opened)

• cereal individual packages or bowls

Recreation Department

• Movie gift cards & concession cards to the Phoenix Theater at Northgate Mall in Durham

• Kroger or Food Lion Gift Cards for resident cooking group

• Word Search Puzzle books, decks of cards and electronic games

If you have items to drop off and need assistance, please call Voluntary Services at (919)286-0411

ext. 7810 and they will meet you out front to pick up the items.

Please continue to work for the VA and encourage your Auxiliary to sponsor an event of some type.

I hope you reported all that you did and will continue to do so as soon as we start reporting for the

new year. I thank you once again for all you do for our Veterans. If I can help in any way, please

call me. If you find that you have some extra time in your schedule, consider volunteering in some

capacity. No time spent with our Veterans is ever too long or too short. They are very appreciative

of all services provided to them.

YOUTH ACTIVITIES

As you plan activities for YOUTH during the summer months, especially those that take place

outside, the greatest gift you can give is to please remember the importance of taking care of not

only your skin, but those of your YOUTH.

May 1 - Melanoma Monday (Taken from www.SpotSkinCancer.org)

• Minimize summer sun exposure between 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.

• Wear a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses & UV protective clothing, even while swimming.

• Apply sunscreen that provides UVB & UVA protection with sun protection factor (SPF) of at

least 30.

• Apply sunscreen 30 minutes BEFORE sun exposure & reapply after

swimming or excessive sweating.

• Seek shade.

• Check the UV index daily in the summer.

• Check your birthday suit on your birthday.

• Avoid tanning beds.

You may not choose to take my advice or the experts, but having had the left side of my back

removed from melanoma due to teaching swimming and life guarding as a teenager, I suffered the

consequences before sunscreen was developed. Unprotected sun exposure is even more dangerous

for YOUTH who have moles, freckles, very fair skin and light hair, or a history of skin cancer.

After two extensive surgeries, I am a survivor, and I want you and the lives of YOUTH you touch to

not have to fight this lethal type of skin cancer. Please spread the word of the importance of

prevention. Thank you.

I have truly enjoyed being your Youth Activities Chairman and I have tried to provide activities

and reminders for the very young through high school. We are role models for many young

people, and as being an Auxiliary member, we can make a difference in their lives.

As you receive new information for the 2017-18 Auxiliary year, please give the YOUTH Chairman

a copy of the Program Goals AND a copy of the Year-End Report form (found online or in the

National Program Book). All Auxiliary members need to be aware of what National wants our

focus to be when working with YOUTH.

Tips to follow towards end-of-year reporting:

• Keep the Goals of Youth Activities (as well as all Program Goals) in front of your members for

planning.

• Order Certificates of Appreciation and/or Certificates of Merit to give to individual students for

their accomplishments in sports, academics, scouting, etc.

• Order RAP coins and print RAP cards to ALWAYS have with you.

• Print out copies of “Youth Groups Supporting Our Veterans” Citation Request Form so these

can be awarded YOUTH groups who work with or do things for veterans at any time during

the year after the NC Youth Activities Chairman signs it.

• Reporting online, remember to include a description of the activity, and the number of

YOUTH involved, the hours, and miles to make this event happen.

President’s Special Project

Hi Folks,

Here we are at the end of another year. Reporting is done but work for the Veterans and their families will never be done. Please keep working to help them in whatever Program you can but be sure to keep track of it so that you can reporting as soon as the reporting is re-opened.

Now as far as the President’s Special Project goes, for any new person who may not know what it is, it is the North Carolina Cottage at the VFW National Home for Children In Indiana. I would like to say “THANK YOU” to all of you who have supported the project. All of you did a fantastic job of supporting this project. All you hard work has certainly added up. THANK YOU for your generous willingness to play Bingo on Friday nights and I can’t forget the help getting donated prizes - --it sure made a difference.

I hope you had as much fun as I did. I would also like to say THANK YOU to the ladies that helped work the Bingo games. Couldn’t have done it without you.

In ending this, I would like to tell you that it is in the plans to continue the Friday Night Bingo games for President –To- Be Joyce Preston so please continue bringing your donations of prizes.

Auxiliary members of the VFW Auxiliary to the Department of North Carolina,

I am a little disappointed in the low numbers of reports received for Legislative, especially since

this year was a Presidential election year. Nevertheless, the reports I did read were great. Thank

you to those Auxiliaries that submitted reports. I can see that Auxiliary members are holding our

legislators accountable and are in constant contact with them. Way to go!

Just because this year is coming to a close, please do not forget that we must stand strong,

together, all year for our veterans. Continue your contact with your local (most people over look

these), state and federal representatives. Stay informed of the decisions that affect our veterans

and their families.

Please help the chairman of Legislative reach a higher percentage of reports next year. I know

the Auxiliary members of North Carolina can do it. We have before and can do it again. We

have Soared for Our Veterans this year in our Unwavering Support for Uncommon Heroes.

Sisters and Brothers,

Spring is in the Air and our eaglets are hatching. NC is currently at 100.01% - which was our goal

and we did it. Our 3rd quarter goal ended on April 30th and we made it to that $400.00 award from

National, which is a qualification for Joyce becoming a member of the Circle of Excellence.

The Reporting year has closed, but recruiting has not. If you are still recruiting and obtaining members, save

your reports until the system is back up and then report for the New Year. Thank you all so much for the

many ideas that you shared on how you used “recruiting” to work for your Auxiliary. I am compiling a list to

share at convention.

Here are some deadlines that we must meet:

• April 30, 2017 - Those that have personally recruited 5 or more members need to fill out the NC

award form and send them to me immediately so that this information can be verified thru our

Treasurer, Jeanne Gilbert in order to get a monetary award from Department.

• May 31, 2017 - If you have recruited 20 or more new members, National needs for you to send that

information to them so that you can get a monetary award. Use the National Membership Award

form on our Department website.

Here are some current stats: Hooray! - There are 13 Auxiliaries at 100% and 35 Auxiliaries at 100+%.

Our chairpersons are working very hard collecting eaglets. Eastern Area has reached their Membership goal

at 100.29%, Western Area Membership is 99.95% and Central Area Membership is 98.59%.......The race is on!

Who will reach 100+% next?

Since I was not at the Spring C of A, I need for all Auxiliaries that were at 100% that did not get Joyce’s

membership pins for the President and Treasurer, nor a certificate of achievement, to contact me at

[email protected] so that I can have it ready at Convention.

Awards: $25.00 for 100% membership for March - 2573 Wilmington in District 5, Eastern Area

Special Awards: I just love giving away money so here is a new challenge that applies to Districts. Currently

Districts at 100% are: District 1, District 5, District 7, District 9, District 12, District 13 and District 14. For the

next few months, I will start drawing for $10.00 awards by membership area. If you will not make it this

month you still have next month. District meetings are coming, so push your Auxiliaries to get 100+%.

Eastern Area Membership

Well Brothers and Sisters of the East, the year is coming to an end. This will be my last

newsletter of the year 2016/2017. As of the end of April 16, 2017 the East is at 99.67%. Just think we

only need about 10 members and we will be 100%. We want to make President Joyce PROUD of the

EAST, because The West (at 99.13 %) is closing up on us mighty fast. Boy, what a race to see who

reach 100% first. COME ON EAST let get out there and get what we need to be the 1st to reach 100%.

The State ONLY needs 33 members to be 100%. We are going to show President Joyce that the East is

still the best.

Spring is here and the weather is BEAUTIFUL, so we now can to get out and find those little eagles

and bring them in. I can’t express enough to make the wellness calls to your Aux brothers and sisters

and do wellness checks. It could be a very good reason why they haven’t paid their dues. It will soon

be time to start working for the year 2017/2018, but we need to get this year done first.

I want to congratulate Aux 8986 Newport for reaching 100%.
