“I believe in peace. I believe in mercy”— Malala Yousafzai October 27, 2015 Dear St. Rita Parents, We are nearing the end of the first marking period and grades will be closing next week. From an academic perspective everyone has been working hard and trying to do their very best work daily. From a social perspective we are now starting to see students having difficulty getting along with their classmates. On many occasions when I speak to the child or his/her parent about a particular incident the “B” word is used Bully. It seems that everything that is said or done is considered bullying and many children have been labeled as bullies. This I find very disturbing especially because St. Rita School is a Catholic school where our students are instructed daily in “treating others as Jesus would do”. Beginning on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the Church will be celebrating the Jubilee Year of Mercy. And what is Mercy you ask? In English “mercy” means showing compassion, forbearance, pity, sympathy, forgiveness, kindness, tenderheartedness, or reframing from harming or punishing. These synonyms give us some insight on this word; they all express how a merciful person might act. During this upcoming Jubilee Year, I am encouraging every student, teacher, and parent to become more merciful in each and every interaction they have here at St. Rita School. Students who show compassion, sympathy, forgiveness, kindness, and tenderness while reframing from harming or hurting others by their unkind words, deeds or actions will be recognized as “Agents of Mercy” throughout the year. Please take some time over the next few weeks to discuss with your child how they can positively interact with their peers and become an Agent of Mercy. Let us together concentrate on developing positive social skills and positive ways to deal with all members of our school family. By working together we can assure that St. Rita School continues to be “the place to be where the love of Christ is lived and shared. ” Thank you for entrusting your child/ren to our care.
