On this Fourth of July, we have much to consider with tensions rising in the Middle East again as Iran elevates aggression in the Strait of Hormuz. Politically, tensions are at an all-time high between traditional values and a progressive agenda changing the moral fabric of our society. From white supremacists to socialists we have it all. What is a Christian to do? What is the Church to do? Reformed Christians have always held that political power in the church is critical to the mission of the Church. They see maintaining a moral and even Christian society as the mission God has given us, and so they are fearful now that their political influence is falling below 50%. It is almost as if our salvation depends on us living in a predominantly Christian nation. If that were true, we should be preaching about the constitutional right and duty to speak out. Our church newsletter should include the names and numbers of our representatives with a constantly updated list of issues that you as a Christian should contact your representative about. We might even exercise church discipline on any who vote for a candidate that supports abortion, or any other legislation that allows people to sin against God’s holy will. The historical fact is, however, that whenever the Church has made political power its goal, the true faith has greatly suffered. And in the Middle Ages when the Church on earth had political power over the secular powers, the message of the Church was nearly lost. The Church does not belong in the secular realm. The Church’s mission has always and only been proclaiming the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. Getting tangled up in legislating morality will only take our eyes off the Gospel and change our preaching to a message that cannot save. Our congregation and synod will continue to uphold the doctrine of the two kingdoms. That is the two separate kingdoms of government and the Church. God has established a secular authority for the rule and blessing of society.

Romans 13 tells us to obey the earthly rulers whom God has established because they are given to us by God for order and the common good. This we have termed the kingdom of God’s left hand. The kingdom of God’s right hand is the Church which is established and grows at the hand of God the Holy Spirit. This kingdom is ruled by Jesus Christ, God the Son. This Kingdom spreads and is strengthened at the powerful work of God the Holy Spirit as he finds a place in the human heart through the message of forgiveness through Jesus. This kingdom functions regardless of the political powers at play around it. The Gospel can and will spread to hearts as it is taught and preached freely in the public square or quietly in private places. Historically, it actually seems to grow better under the duress of government hostility. This kingdom disregards borders. It is not intended to be identified with any certain nation. The Holy Spirit crosses borders and ethnicities just as the wind crosses countries and continents. If a country attains a Christian identity it is because Christians make great citizens as they function within the Kingdom of God’s left hand, the government. In whatever country God has blessed a Christian with citizenship, they obey the laws as far as God’s law allows, they pray for their rulers, and many participate actively in governance locally or nationally. So, what is a Christian to do? If you want to help our country govern well as the left hand of God, get involved, support those you believe will do the work well. If you want to make a global difference, an eternal difference in the hearts of the people of our world, support and pray for the Gospel message and the mission of reaching hearts both locally and around the world. The kingdom of God’s left hand, the government blesses people temporally. The kingdom of God’s right hand, the Church, blesses people eternally. Each must remain focused on their own mission. Three weeks ago, my wife and I received calls to St. John’s Lutheran School in Baraboo, WI. Over the last three weeks, we have been prayerfully considering the two calls that we were holding. We have appreciated the comments made by members of David’s Star when they talked to us and shared their feelings about our Calls to St. John’s; as well as, our ministry at David’s Star. We would like to thank everyone for their prayers and comments while we were considering both calls. The Call process has given us the opportunity to look at our ministry at David’s

Star as well as the ministry at St. John’s. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we have decided to return the calls to St. John’s and continue our ministry at David’s Star. We look forward to our continued ministry at David’s Star and ask for your prayers as we continue to serve this congregation.

SIMPLY GIVING PROGRAM

Generosity Made Simple

A “Summer Song Service” with confession of sins, meditations on the lessons, and congregational singing of familiar hymns set to piano/acoustic guitar is being planned for the worship services on July 11th, 13th, and 14th. Congregation members Shelley Willis and Jennifer Mueller will serve as assisting vocalists in this special service. Hymns will include “Amazing Grace”, “What a Friend we have in Jesus,” “In Christ Alone”, “Rock of Ages” and more. Weather-permitting, the second service on Sunday (9:30am) will be held in the church woods. (All the other services will take place in the church as usual.) Worshippers are encouraged to consider “tailgating” after the outdoor service by bringing a picnic lunch. Hot grills will be provided. (A totally mosquito-free environment is not guaranteed, but the Building and Grounds team will do their best to have the woods prepared for comfortable use!) If you have friends without a church home, you might consider this service as an opportunity to invite them to discover the saving mes-sage we proclaim at David’s Star week after week.

Pastors’ Report (Pastor Woldt) We are attending the SEW Pastor-Teacher Conference. The pastors will be involved with Morning Bible Camp devotional and song time next week. Church/School office might not always be staffed 7:30 – 3:30 Monday through Friday during the summer, but the phone message will encourage callers to contact the pastors directly for assistance. May be looking for people to attend a leaders conference in Chicago from January 21-23, 2020.

Buildings and Grounds (Glenn Miller) - Lights for gym and parking lot have been received and looking to install. Purchased a scissors lift for maintenance. Looking for floor and corridor refinishing.

Board of Education (Jason Walz) Amy Schrap and Colleen Loeffler have made commendable progress toward WELS Ministry Certification.

Board of Elders (Dan Bolha) . The Elders and Pastors agreed to focus on our adults in regard to inactive attendance. We may look for an outdoor service for the second service on the second Sunday in July. A reminder, the July 4th, Thursday night service will not be held.

Evangelism Committee (Andrew Loescher) Morning Bible camp coming up. Online advertising for the camp. Plan doing an additional school mailing. In late July/August do a church service mailing. Working with Paul Zeitlow to have a two sided document with information about the church. School fliers are also being looked at for distribution.

Stewardship (David Zarling) 10 for 10 program from the synod possibly for fall 2019.

Spiritual Growth (Jon Kruse) Working to get fall guest Bible study presenters. Mini-Bible class this summer between services on Luke. Teen retreat held the end of July.

2019 May Operating Budget Financial Update Thanks be to the Lord! The total offerings for May were $58,263, which is about 6.4% lower than the budgeted offerings. The total income for the month was 5.5% lower than budgeted for May and is 5.4% lower on the year to date. The actual expenses for May were about 4.7% higher than the budgeted amount for the month and they are 0.2% higher for the year to date. The overall fund balance at the end of May shows a deficit of $50,631.

2019 May Ministries Beyond our Congregation Financial Update The remittances in May for the WELS mission were 24% higher than budgeted for, while the KMLHS operating mission remittances were 11% higher than budget. The KML Joyful Noise remittances were 19% lower than the amount budgeted for. The total amount remitted for all missions was about 18% higher than the amount budgeted for May and is 11% higher for the year to date.

2019 May Building Fund Update The mortgage loan balance at the end of May is $877,156. The council’s objective is to maintain a $100,000 cushion in the building fund debt account—our balance at 5/31/19 was $79,424. This balance is down about 6.8% from last month.

I was reading an article on “What is normal aging and what is not…” the other day and found myself in the Alzheimer’s Association website eventually! (A great source of information.) Approaching memory loss concerns can be difficult if you have noticed changes in yourself or a family member and friend. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, it’s natural to feel uncertain about voicing your worries because that can make them seem more “real”. Here are a few things to consider: What changes in memory,

thinking or behavior do you notice?

What else is going on? With regard to health or lifestyle issues…

Has anyone else noticed changes?

Are any of these changes a sign of or symptom of Alzheimer’s or another dementia?

View the 10 early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s to check if the changes are on the list.

Start a conversation! These are significant health concerns and it’s important to take action to figure out what is going on! Who should participate in the

conversation? A trusted family member or friend.

What is the best time and place to have the conversation? As soon as possible. Choose a time and location that is comfortable for everyone involved.

How will you approach the conversation? “How have you been feeling lately? You haven’t seemed like yourself?” or “I’ve notice [blank] in you, and I’m concerned. Have you noticed it? Are you worried?” or “I’ve notice [blank} in myself, and I’m concerned. Have you noticed anything about me that worries you?”

Discuss seeing a doctor together. Many conditions can cause memory loss or affect thinking or behavior, so it’s important to get a full medical evaluation. If the cause isn’t Alzheimer’s or another dementia, it could be an easily treatable condition. If it is dementia, there are many benefits to receiving an early and accurate diagnosis, including the opportunity to plan for the future, access support services and explore medication that may address some symptoms for a time.

If needed, have multiple conversations. The first conversation may not be

successful. Some people attribute problems with memory, thinking or behavior to stress or normal aging and may not take your concerns seriously. Plan for the next conversation! What worked well, what didn’t! Consider what could be done differently…

Approach “difficult conversations” with the love of Christ, asking for his help to guide you!

WELS WOMEN’S MINISTRY CONFERENCE

SEMINARY NEWS

At the end of this month, Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary will experience a change in leadership. Seminary President Rev. Paul Wendland will be stepping down as president and will move back into the role of full-time classroom professor. Seminary Vice President Rev. Earle Treptow has accepted the call to serve as the seminary president and will officially begin his duties on July 1, 2019. The role of the seminary president is an important one. It’s been said that “as the seminary goes, so goes the synod.” The seminary is the place where nearly all WELS pastors are trained, so it goes without saying that for the synod to remain faithful to God’s Word, the seminary will need to remain faithful to the doctrines of Scripture. It is the responsibility of the seminary president to ensure that the seminary carries out that responsibility. The seminary president is also the spokesman for the seminary. Our synod looks to the seminary faculty to provide guidance and input on doctrinal matters. The Conference of Presidents often consults with the seminary faculty when discussing doctrinal issues. It is the role of the seminary president to speak for the faculty when discussions on doctrinal matters take place. President Wendland first joined the seminary faculty in 2001 after serving in both world and home mission settings, in an established congregation, and as a professor at Northwestern College and Martin Luther College. He has served as seminary president since 2004. We are thankful for the years in which President Wendland has faithfully carried out these important responsibilities and pray for God’s continued blessings on his new role in the classroom. Prior to coming to the seminary in 2016, President-elect Treptow served as a pastoral recruiter at Martin Luther College, as a pastor in British Columbia and Denver, Colorado, and as the president of the Nebraska District. As Rev. Treptow begins his role as seminary president, we can be thankful that God has blessed our seminary in the past and that those blessings will continue under the leadership of President Treptow.

SAVE LIVES WHILE YOU RIDE WELS Lutherans for Life invites you to the SOUL Ride motorcycle event on Saturday, July 27! June, 2019 Let Love, Compassion and Care be Our Prayer

The three words “love”, “compassion” and “care” define our work at the Mwembezhi clinic. That definition is what Jesus Christ demonstrated while on earth as those words describe some of the characteristics of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the charge he gave to all believers. Showing love, compassion and care can speak volumes through acts of service to the Lord and for one another. Jesus Christ was able to demonstrate all these qualities of Christian life through his ministry on earth. The Mwembezhi Lutheran Rural Health Center in the central province of Zambia is an example of where love, compassion and care can be seen and demonstrated by so many, such as the health workers, the Government leadership and international groups. The Central Africa Medical Mission (CAMM) in the United States of America has been at the forefront of supporting the clinic both financially and materially. CAMM has continued to show Christ’s love through the provision of supplies and medicines for the clinic, as well as other Church group members and individuals who have provided pill bottles, blankets for babies and much other material support. The clinic staff have shown love, compassion and care especially to the users of the health services being provided at the clinic. Those clients and care takers are grateful for the unique services offered at Mwembezhi that start each day with a morning devotion and scripture reading. People coming to the health center have for a long time appreciated how good it is to start off with the Word of God. The declaration of the area as a district has seen an increase in the population which has now reached about fourteen thousand people. Population growth has also come with a lot of challenges such as the breakout of diseases such as cholera and other health issues that come as the result of the increased population.

In the more than fifty (50) years of service at Mwembezhi, God has sustained HIS work through many men and women who have contributed in different ways and, in the effort of trying to do our best, we need also to remember to pray for strength for one another. Ephesians 3:14-21 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen Finally, it is important in our Christian Journey to live by love, compassion and care as an expression of faith in Jesus Christ, our Savior from sin. People in general and especially those with health problems tend to appreciate and place Jesus Christ at the center of their lives reduces stress, and loneliness and helps with their health problems. If we can practice living like Christ, then the world’s problems can be diminished and a happy person can be a good contributor to the development of the gospel and world in general.
