God’s Promise to David

David’s Prayer

Text: 2 Samuel 7:1-29, 1. After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him, 2. he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent." 3. Nathan replied to the king, "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you." 4. That night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying: 5. "Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in? 6. I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. 7. Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?" ' 8. "Now then, tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture and from following the flock to be ruler over my people Israel. 9. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men of the earth. 10. And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning

11. and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. " 'The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you: 12. When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men. 15. But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me ; your throne will be established forever.' " 17. Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation. 18. Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: "Who am I, O Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 19. And as if this were not enough in your sight, O Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign LORD ? 20. "What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Sovereign LORD. 21. For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant. 22. "How great you are, O Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. 23. And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?

24. You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, O LORD, have become their God. 25. "And now, LORD God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, 26. so that your name will be great forever. Then men will say, 'The LORD Almighty is God over Israel!' And the house of your servant David will be established before you. 27. "O LORD Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, 'I will build a house for you.' So your servant has found courage to offer you this prayer. 28. O Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your words are trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. 29. Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, O Sovereign LORD, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever." (NIV) Introduction: I. Coffman emphasized that this chapter is strongly Messianic as is shown by certain New Testament references which are correlatives of certain statements found in 2 Samuel 7. II. Smith concluded that the events of 2 Samuel 7 actually took place fairly late in David’s reign, that the events of 2 Samuel are not necessarily arranged in chronological order.

A. These events are topically placed here because they naturally follow the bringing of the ark to Jerusalem as stated in chapter 6. (Smith) B. The Pulpit Commentary concurred with the fact that “the order is not chronological.”

Commentary:

God’s Promise to David

2 Samuel 7:1, After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him, (NIV) I. After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, …

A. 2 Samuel 5:9, 11, David then took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the area around it, from the supporting terraces inward. Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs and carpenters and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David. (NIV) B. 1 Chronicles 14:1, Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons and carpenters to build a palace for him. (NIV) C. Deuteronomy 12:10, But you will cross the Jordan and settle in the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and he will give you rest from all your enemies around you so that you will live in safety. (NIV) D. Deuteronomy 25:19, When the LORD your God gives you rest from all the enemies around you in the land he is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget! (NIV)

E. Joshua 22:4, Now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest as he promised, return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side of the Jordan. (NIV) F. Joshua 23:1, After a long time had passed and the LORD had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them, Joshua, by then old and well advanced in years, (NIV) G. 1 Kings 5:18, The craftsmen of Solomon and Hiram and the men of Gebal cut and prepared the timber and stone for the building of the temple. (NIV) H. The Lord had given David victory over his enemies, both foreign and domestic. I. The palace had been constructed with the assistance of materials and craftsmen supplied by Hiram, king of Tyre.

2 Samuel 7:2, he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent." (NIV) I. he said to Nathan the prophet, …

A. Nathan the prophet was perhaps the most influential religious figure to arise in Israel since Samuel, Smith wrote. B. Nathan was the courageous prophet who, following David’s sin regarding Uriah and Bathsheba, confronted David and told him, “You are the man!”

II. “Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”

A. Coffman and Smith stated David’s conscience began to hurt him due to the contrast between his own palatial residence and the humble quarters where the ark of God was kept. B. Psalm 132:1-5, O LORD, remember David and all the hardships he endured. He swore an oath to the LORD and made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob: "I will not enter my house or go to my bed- I will allow no sleep to my eyes, no slumber to my eyelids, till I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob." (NIV) C. Haggai 1:4, "Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?" (NIV) D. This tent had been prepared by David, not the tabernacle constructed at Mount Sinai.

2 Samuel 7:3, Nathan replied to the king, "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you." (NIV) I. Nathan replied to the king, …

A. Nathan evidently understood that David had in mind to build a house for God.

1. He responded “as a pious and prudent man, not as a prophet.” (Clarke)

II. “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you.”

A. Nathan’s initial response was an expression of his personal opinion which was given without prior consultation with the Lord.

1. He should have gotten a “thus saith the Lord” before speaking. 2. We must be slow to speak and, before telling a person, ”the Lord is with you,” be sure we are certain we know what the Lord’s will really is from a study of his Word.

B. David had enjoyed success because the Lord was with him.

1. 1 Samuel 18:12, 14, 28, Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had left Saul. In everything he did he had great success, because the LORD was with him. When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David, (NIV) 2. 2 Samuel 5:10, And he became more and more powerful, because the LORD God Almighty was with him. (NIV)

2 Samuel 7:4, That night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying: (NIV) I. That very night the word of the Lord came to Nathan in a vision, saying:

A. God immediately revealed his will to Nathan modifying Nathan’s earlier advice to David.

1. David would not be the person to build God a house. 2. The idea of building the temple was David’s, not God’s.

a. Acts 7:47, But Solomon built him an house. (KJV)

b. Ezekiel 11:22-23, Then the cherubim, with the wheels beside them, spread their wings, and the glory of the God of Israel was above them. The glory of the LORD went up from within the city and stopped above the mountain east of it. (NIV)

B. The expression, “the word of the Lord came,” occurs some two hundred (200) times in the Old Testament, Smith noted.

2 Samuel 7:5, "Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in? (NIV) I. “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says:…

A. 1 Kings 8:18, But the LORD said to my father David, 'Because it was in your heart to build a temple for my Name, you did well to have this in your heart. (NIV) B. The building of the temple is not forbidden, but delayed and assigned to Solomon.

II. Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in?

A. Clearly God was not enthused with David’s idea to build him a house.

1. God’s presence cannot be limited to one location. 2. David was a man of war guilty of much bloodshed, and, therefore, not the one to build God’s house.

3. David was otherwise too busy to build the temple. (Willis via Coffman)

a. 1 Kings 5:3-4, "You know that because of the wars waged against my father David from all sides, he could not build a temple for the Name of the LORD his God until the LORD put his enemies under his feet. But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or disaster. (NIV)

B. God was telling David that he was not the one to build a house for God.

2 Samuel 7:6, I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. (NIV) I. I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day.

A. God had never requested a house and God had given David victory over all his enemies, Smith observed. B. Smith further observed that:

1. God would make David’s name great. 2. David and God’s people would enjoy rest from their enemies. 3. God would build a house, dynasty for David.

II. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling.

A. “I have walked continually: that is, I have ever been a wanderer.” (The Pulpit Commentary)

2 Samuel 7:7, Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?" never fail to have a man to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your sons are careful in all they do to walk before me as you have done.' You are not to build a house for my Name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight. But you will have a son who will be a man of peace and rest, and I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side. His name will be Solomon, and I will grant Israel peace and quiet during his reign. (NIV)

II. “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”

A. A “house of cedar” for God was important for David, but not for the Lord. B. Let us be sure that what is important to God and what is important to us are the same.

2 Samuel 7:8, "Now then, tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture and from following the flock to be ruler over my people Israel. (NIV) I. “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lrod Almighty says:…

A. The true greatness of David accrued from his character, his integrity, his humility and his unwavering faith in God, Coffman wrote, not from the palatial mansion in which he lived nor the office of king he occupied. Conclusion: I. The ultimate fulfillment of these divine promises was realized in Christ, the Messiah.

A. Matthew 1:1, The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. (KJV) B. Acts 13:22-23, And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus: (KJV)

C. Hebrews 1:5, For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? (KJV) D. Luke 1:32, He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: (KJV) E. 2 Corinthians 6:16-18, And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. (KJV)

II. Let us resolve anew to faithfully serve Christ our Lord.
