God’s Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go!

This is not a quote from a book by Dr. Seuss. It comes to us from Paul’s letter to the Romans (8:12-14, The Message). And we heard it on May 27.

This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It is adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?”

More like Steppenwolf, we are—each one of us—“born to be Wild,” greened by the Spirit in unpredictable and lively ways. We are entering ‘Ordinary Time’. But there is nothing ordinary about it. The whole world is unfolding, like the maple leaves on the tree outside. Extraordinarily beautiful and miraculous. Our Presiding Bishop is often quoted as saying, “If you are breathing, God is calling.”

We do not know what each ordinary day will bring, but every morning trust that it is God who greens it, and brings life. We are called to be bearers of the love of God for the world, together, powered by the Spirit.

Our own Presiding Bishop was the preacher at the royal wedding. The Most Rev. Michael Curry—and it was powerful and profound. The most googled word after the wedding was “Episcopal”! To see and hear for yourself, go to https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/05/19/video-text-presiding-bishops-royal-wedding-sermon/

THE TOP TEN THINGS you might hear in a sermon by Bishop Curry:

10. Now bear with me, I’m going somewhere with this!9. God didn’t put you on this earth just to use up oxygen!8. I’m not going to be up here long.7. If you’re breathing, God’s calling!6. We have a God! And that God raised Jesus from the dead. EVERYONE: I don’t know how he did it, but he did!5. One more thing and then I’m going to sit down.4. You are a beloved child of God.3. Jesus movement2. Loving, liberating, life-giving God.1. If it’s not about love, it’s not about God!

Dave Has a Secret

Psst.....if I let you in on a secret will you promise to keep it to yourself? Keep it close to your chest? Not even share it with your closest friend? Ok then, you promise? All right, here it is…..every Saturday evening at 5:00pm, St. Andrew’s opens its doors for an intimate celebration of the Eucharist. If you are looking for a chance to quietly connect, an opportunity to be still and a time of thoughtful reflection then the 5:00pm Saturday worship service is just for you. This service, like all services at St. Andrew’s, is open to everyone no matter where you are on your spiritual journey, even if you are like me and can't keep a secret. ;-)

New Garden

Now that the terrace has been completed, a new garden has been formed in front of the church. It is a blank canvas just waiting to be filled in with perennials. Many of you will be dividing your own plants and perhaps would be willing to share some of the divisions. We could use hardy sun or partial sun plants. As in any other “potluck” whatever shows up usually works.

If you would like to work on the garden with the committee let me know. If you are willing to share or need help digging and dividing call Ellie at 218-722-3710.

Editor note: One of the easiest ways of dividing large plants: Place two garden forks back to back down the center of the roots and pry apart

About The Front Yard ….

A Note from Dawn Buck (Park Point Community Club):

Looks great and appreciate the inclusivity and welcoming nature of the project.

I feel discouraged when the "no parking" and "no trespassing" signs come out for the summer months.

As Dave Haavik from 22nd says, "Why on earth would you live on Park Point if you don't like people?"

With appreciation for fostering a sense of belonging and offering access and respite for those in need of a rest or a place to park.

Art News: Bible Stories

In church we are privileged to hear the word of God through song and the spoken word. We can also experience God’s word through visual media. The focus of our next art exhibit will be nine stories from the Bible—three from the Hebrew Bible, five from the New Testament and one from the Apocrypha. The stories feature men, women or children. They address themes of redemption, courage, social justice issues such as hunger, generosity, compassion, war and peace. These are the stories we have selected for exploration:

Ruth and Naomi—Book of RuthMoses and the Burning Bush—Exodus 3Deborah—Genesis 35:2 and Judges 4-5Parable of the Sower—Matthew 13Prodigal Son—Luke 11-32Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand—Matthew 14Jesus and the Children—Mark 9:35-37Widow With Two Coins—Luke 21:1-4Judith— Apocrypha

Each story will have its own wall space in the exhibit. We will be collecting visual material from various sources, including any contributions from individuals who wish to participate. We would like to see original art, photos, poems, personal stories of what a particular Bible story means or how it has affected an individual’s life.

A specific due date has not been chosen but you will have the summer to get your creations ready. More information will be available soon. If you have questions talk to Ellie Alspach or Arlene Renken.

Bishop’s Committee meeting—May 2018

On this beautiful May morning, the BC committee opened by reflecting on Romans 8:12-17. Minutes from January, March and April were approved and review of financial documents showed that we are slightly ahead of budget in income and slightly behind in expenses.

As we enter the summer months, Marta’s calendar highlighted the upcoming ECMN Quest Camp, for which we will be providing camperships for Maddy and Kylie. The ECMN will also provide a scholarship. The Brat sale is coming up soon and it looks like we will have many volunteers and brat cookers. The yard should be ready by June 1. Proceeds from the Brat sale will be split between St. Andrew's youth programs, and youth in Duluth. This year, there is a need at both Steve O'Neill apartments and the Life House youth for money for transportation—bus passes, cabs, etc.

The style was chosen for T-shirts and sweatshirts. These will be on sale for anyone to order, and we plan to have them ready in time for the Brat Sale. Ian Scherber, from Duluth Screen Printing is giving us a $150 discount on the shirts. Planning continues for “Give a Teen a Lift” although no one has stepped forward to take the lead on this important project yet. The “Nourishment and Knowledge” program is also moving forward with Dave taking the lead.

The BC discussed the Survey results, which had been postponed until most members were able to be present at the meeting. One theme of the survey results was “Staying Engaged with the Community.” We are addressing this with our work with CHUM, but talked about how we could do more and more direct work with that organization and other organizations in the community, while also trying to stay focused. Our Nourishment and Knowledge and Give a Teen a Lift programs, and the landscaping project are also working toward that goal. Dave is going to research the cost of solar panels, which was another area of interest that came up in the survey. Evangelism was another important theme, including increasing the number of congregants, particularly families with children. While the demographics of Park Point offer challenges to attracting young families locally, we are spreading the gospel through our landscaping project, T-shirts and community engagement. More can always be done, and new ideas and energy from the congregation is always welcome.

The committee talked about some ways in which we will celebrate Joanne Blyler’s life, to honor her passion for reducing poverty in our community and caring for those in need, especially at CHUM. Celebrations will include an ice cream social with CHUM, a speaker highlighting issues of importance to Joanne during Nourishment and Knowledge (poverty), and our own celebration later this summer/early fall.
