Greeting

ACTIVITY Greet your baby with a warm smile, and make eye contact with him or her before taking your little one from the sleep space. Talk to your little one about their night and what you are doing as you prepare for the day.

ACTIVITY Once personal care needs are met and you and your child are ready to start the day, hold your baby and look at the pages in a touch and feel book. Encourage your little one to touch the different textures on the page. Say, “You’re touching the ____. It’s so soft.” You may have a book like, Pat the Bunny by Dorothy Kunhardt or Baby at the Farm by Karen Katz, but any book with textures will work.

Processing Activity

ACTIVITY Experiment with touching, pulling and tugging by applying tape of any kind to a piece of cardboard or a box on any strong surface. Show your little one how you can pull the tape off, and possibly put it back on. Depending on your child’s age, he or she can experiment with texture, touch and stickiness.

PERSONAL CARE INTERACTIONS

ACTIVITY Explore scents together. Holding your child close, experiment with a few scented cotton balls that you have prepared. Vanilla extract, peppermint extract and a drop of lavender oil are all scents that will provide the opportunity for you and your child to explore the sense of smell together.

Materials Cotton balls, cotton pads, fabric, scented extracts or oils such as vanilla extract, peppermint extract.

ACTIVITY Baby massage time! If you’d like to try some new techniques for massaging your baby, check out this information from the Mayo Clinic. Remember, soft, soothing calm touches are the key, place your baby on his or her back so you can maintain eye contact.

ACTIVITY During a snack or mealtime, ask questions and use descriptive language. Ask, “How does that smell?” or say, “Tell me how it tastes.” While your child may not respond with verbal language, asking these types of questions increases your baby’s receptive language, his or her understanding of words that she or he hears.

ACTIVITY Follow a consistent rest routine with your baby. Talk with your child about the day’s activities as you lull him or her to sleep.

ACTIVITY Try this baby and me tree, movement activity. Holding your baby, shift your weight onto one foot. Bend the other knee and place your foot on the inside of your thigh or calf above or below the knee. Another option is to point your knee to the side, placing your heel against your angle, with toes still touching the ground. You can also practice this pose against a wall to help with balance. Remember to switch sides. This pose is great for focus. Encourage your baby to practice steady breathing with you as you move from side to side.

ACTIVITY Provide a small sheet of adhesive liner and a variety of materials, such as cotton balls, tissue paper or colored paper to make a adhesive liner collage. You can also try this with some glue on paper.

ACTIVITY Before moving to the next activity, engage in the fingerplay: “In this whole, wide world” (Make a big circle with your baby’s arms.) “I can clearly see” (Fingers around eyes, looking through and then point your little ones and say eyes.) “There is only one you” (Point to your baby.) “And there is only one me” (Point to yourself.)
