From the Family of Laurel Barry:
Words cannot express the heartfelt love and
kindness we received from mom’s church
family here at Goddard. She loved her church,
and we felt your love for her.
From Reverend Eubanks’ scripture passages
and kind words to the choir’s beautiful voices,
mama would have thought it was wonderful.
To her Joy Goddard Circle who worked so hard
to prepare a wonderful meal for us, her much
loved Susan C. King Sunday School class and
to all those who gave food, flowers, cards,
calls and gifts to the church, thank you for
wrapping us in a warm blanket of
Christian love.

The United Methodist Foundation of Arkansas
Keep your love for the church alive with endowment gifts that do good forever. Endowments through the United Methodist Foundation provide the practical means for faithful stewards like you to continue giving beyond your lifetime through life income gifts like annuity trusts, unitrusts, and charitable gift annuities; gifts through a will; and outright gifts.
The endowment you create can benefit your local church in whatever manner you choose. Your church can determine where the annual income from the endowment is best spent or you can designate to benefit the choir, children’s ministry, building maintenance, or another ministry closest to your heart. For more information on local church endowments, contact UMFA Vice President of Development Janet Marshall at [email protected] or call 501-664-8632.
Over 50 Years of Faithful Ministry
Our mission is to create and administer
permanent charitable endowment funds
to strengthen and expand United
Methodist ministry in Arkansas.

Heartburn or Heart Attack?
The holidays are coming: parties, family get-togethers,
celebrations and lots of eating. With all the spicy, fatty
foods comes the chance of feeling a burning sensation
in the chest and throat areas. You think it's probably
indigestion or heartburn - and it very well may be, but
there's a chance it could be caused by angina, or an
actual heart attack. The pain of a gallbladder attack
can also spread to your chest and may cause nausea
and an intense, steady ache in the upper middle or
upper right abdomen - especially after a fatty meal.
The pain may shift to the shoulders, neck or arms as
well.
Heartburn, angina, heart attack and gallbladder disease
may all feel very much alike. Even experienced
physicians can't always tell the difference until they
have test results to rule out or confirm a condition.
If you have persistent chest pain, even if you think it is
heartburn, you should seek emergency medical help.
The pain doesn't have to last a long time to be a
warning sign, so contact your physician about the
episode, even if it went away and you didn't need to
seek medical attention at the time.
Researchers have long noted that there are distinct
spikes in heart attacks around the holiday season.
Studies suggest that people tend to postpone getting
treatment because they don't want to disrupt the
holiday festivities. Also holiday travelers might take
longer to find medical care, which heightens the risk.
Other factors include emotional stress and
overindulgence. People also tend to gain weight
during the holiday season and take in more salt, which
can put additional stress on a weakened heart.
Typical features of heartburn include:
• Burning sensation in the upper abdomen and may
move up into the chest
• Usually occurs after eating, or while lying down
or bending over
• May awaken you from your sleep, especially if
you have eaten within 2 hours of going to
bed
• May be accompanied by small amount of stomach
contents rising up into your throat (reflux)
• Usually relieved by antacids.
Typical heart attack signs and symptoms:
• Pressure, tightness, squeezing sensation or aching
in the chest, neck or arms that may spread
to your jaw or back
• Nausea, indigestion, heartburn or abdominal pain
• Shortness of breath
• Cold sweat
• Fatigue
• Light headedness or sudden dizziness.
If you feel chest pain or other symptoms, call 911 for
emergency help. The stakes are high, so give yourself and
your family a gift this holiday season. Don't postpone
treatment because you don't want to spoil the holiday
merrymaking.

Surviving the Holidays
The GriefShare ministry will be hosting the
“Surviving the Holidays” program again this
year. This is a one time program featuring a
time of fellowship and a video. Date and time:
November 18th from 10-12. Brunch will be
provided. I encourage anyone who struggles
with the loss of a loved one especially during the
holidays to come be a part of this time together.
Also, I’ve learned of a book called “The Empty
Chair.” I will be reading it myself and wanted to
share with those who may like to get one.
GriefShare is a wonderful, well thought out
national accredited program that has helped
thousands of hurting people heal in a healthy
way. Prayers for all who hurt.
Share a smile,
Cindy Peevy, GriefShare Leader

Pat Singleton, Betty Morkemo, Sharon Freeman, Barbara Braswell, Deanna Friedman,
and Elizabeth Eubanks attended the Northwest District UMW Annual Meeting on
October 14 at First United Methodist Church in
Fort Smith. Jane Fant drove down from North-
west Arkansas to attend this meeting with us.
What a joy it was to be with her for the day!
Lynn Baker challenged us to be BOLD in
fulfilling our Purpose as United Methodist
Women. During this meeting Goddard UMW
received the highest mission recognition and
we were recognized for our financial giving to
support United Methodist Women Missions around the world and for helping support
our UMW Camp Aldersgate in Little Rock. 9 women from our church were recognized
for fulfilling the UMW Reading Program. We were also recognized for having a UMW
Sunday, for attending a mission study, and for fulfilling requirements for Racial Jus-
tice Charter Containing Membership. Yep, if you could and should have done it, we
did it! Thank you Goddard United Methodist Women for being so faithful!
What’s next? The 14th Annual Meeting of the Arkansas Conference United
Methodist Women… Saturday, Nov. 11 at St. James UMC in Little Rock. Are you up
for a road trip? If so, please let Elizabeth Eubanks (629-8698) or call the church office
(785-1415) to let us know you would like to attend this meeting. The cost is $20 and
includes lunch. This meeting will include 4 Town Hall Meetings: “ Advocate”
presented by Rev. Steve Copley, “Experience” led by Carolyn Schumacher, Judy
Jacobs, and Marleena Calvin. “Learn A” presented by Lynn Baker and “Learn B” led
by Rev. Maxine Allen.
Betty Morkemo is working to complete our Goddard UMW Directory for next year.
Please let her know if any of your contact information has changed.
Please remember to come to your circle meeting this month. Our next general
meeting will be our Christmas Meeting on December 12. It will be a potluck dinner
hosted by Joy Goddard.

News from our Food Pantry Ministry
Submitted by Elizabeth Eubanks
The Susan B King Class continues to make wonderful bags for the
children who come to our pantry with their parents or grandparents.
I wish you could see their faces light up when they are handed one of
these bags! One little boy did a little “happy dance” when he saw all
the goodies! We are so thankful for the generosity of the Susan B.
King Class Members.!
This last month was really busy for our volunteers! We gave 60 bags each week. People
continue to thank us for helping our neighbors. One woman told us she had not eaten in
three days and another lady told us that she has never had to ask for food before but she was
so hungry and so thankful we could help her.
We are planning to give out 100 turkey bags this year. Thank you to Mary Beth Sudduth
for leading this ministry. The Thanksgiving Turkey and Grocery Bag Giveaway Day is Mon-
day, Nov. 20.
It is a blessing to help with this ministry. If you would like to help, please contact Mary Beth
Sudduth.
At Thanksgiving time, we are so thankful for all you do to help our Food Pantry Ministry,
whether it is your prayer support, your time to serve in the Pantry, or your financial support.
We thank you and appreciate you. Let’s keep on being God’s people …doing His work to help
others!
