The pharaoh, or 'king,' respected Joseph and cared for the Israelites; however, after Joseph's death, a new pharaoh came to power in Egypt. • Continue: "The king placed people over the Israelites and increased the amount of work they were to do. God made the Israelites successful in their work and blessed them with many children, so the number of Israelites increased."

• Choose a child to read aloud Exodus 1:15-22.• Say: "One day, the king met with the midwives,

'women who helped the Israelite women give birth.' The king instructed the midwives, 'When an Israelite woman gives birth to a boy, kill the baby, but if it is a girl, let her live.' The midwives feared God and chose not to obey the king. The king asked the women why they disobeyed him. They said the Israelite women gave birth before they arrived. God rewarded the midwives for protecting His people and allowed them to have their own children. The Israelites continued to increase in number. The king then commanded that every boy born to an Israelite be thrown into the Nile River."

• Enlist a volunteer to read aloud Exodus 2:1-4.• Explain: "One Israelite woman gave birth to

a son. She saw her baby was beautiful and decided to hide him. After three months, the mother realized she could no longer hide her son. The baby's sister, Miriam, watched from a distance to see what would happen."

• Guide a child to read aloud Exodus 2:5-7.• Say: "Pharaoh's daughter came to the Nile to

bathe. When she saw the basket, she instructed one of her servant girls to bring it to her. Miriam ran to Pharaoh's daughter and said, 'I can get an Israelite woman to take care of the baby for you.'"

• Read aloud Exodus 2:8-10.• Conclude: "Pharaoh's daughter agreed. The

We will continue until each person eats his food."

God's Plan for Families—Parent Connection (God's Plan for Families • Session 1)Worship KidStyle Children's Edition, Volume 3© 2013 LifeWay. Printed in USA. OK to copy.

Session 1: Help One AnotherThe Big Idea: I can help my family members. The Bible Story: Baby Moses' Family Protected Him (Exodus 1:8–2:10)Key Bible Verse: Luke 6:31Connecting Points: Display a basket. Invite your child to tell what she knows about what happened to Baby Moses. Ask: "How did Baby Moses' family help him?" Encourage your family members to think of ways they can help each other. Provide slips of paper and pencils, and encourage family members to write on each slip one way they can help someone in the family. Place the slips of paper in the basket. Take turns choosing strips and reading them aloud for the family. Challenge family members to help one another this week by doing the things named on the strips. Pray, thanking God for your family and asking Him to help each of you make contributions to your family in a positive way.

Session 2: Care for One AnotherThe Big Idea: I can care for my family members. The Bible Story: Ruth and Her Family (Ruth 1:1-22; 2:1-23; 4:13-17)Key Bible Verse: Mark 9:35bConnecting Points: Gather your family around the kitchen/dining room table and enjoy a snack of homemade bread or toast. Review the story of Ruth and how she gathered grain to care for her mother-in-law Naomi. Say: "Ruth took care of Naomi because it was the right thing to do." Ask: "What are some ways we can show care for one another?" Point out that one way we can show care is by praying for each other. Invite family members to pray aloud or silently for the person seated to their left. Close the prayer time by thanking God for your family.

Session 3: Learn from ParentsThe Big Idea: I can learn from my parents about God.The Bible Story: Families Learn Together (Deuteronomy 4–6)Key Bible Verse: Proverbs 2:6Connecting Points: Did you realize that God expects you, the parent, to be the primary spiritual influence in the life of your child? Before leading your family time, read Deuteronomy 6:4-9. Pray and ask God to lead you as you teach your child about Him every day. In your family time,

lead your family to study the Ten Commandments together (Deuteronomy 5:6-21). Say: "God's plan for families is for parents to teach their children about Him. Today let's learn about the laws God gave the Israelites." Provide a Bible for each family member and take turns reading aloud and discussing the Commandments. Say: "We are to love God with all our heart, soul, and strength. We can learn more about God when we study the Bible together." Pray, asking God to help you as you teach your child to love and obey Him.

Session 4: Trust GodThe Big Idea: I can trust God to meet the needs of my family. The Bible Story: The Widow and Her Sons (2 Kings 4:1-7)Key Bible Verse: Psalm 62:8Connecting Points: As a family, do an inventory of the things you have. Walk through your house and list several items in each room (or assign family members different rooms). Evaluate the list by identifying the items that are "needs" (something you must have to survive) and those that are "wants" (something you would like to have but can live without). Say: "God doesn't promise to meet all of our wants, but we can trust Him to meet our needs." Invite your child to read aloud Psalm 62:8. Recall times your family has had a need and how God met the need. Pray, asking God to help your family trust Him to meet their needs.

Session 5: Obey ParentsThe Big Idea: I can obey my parents. The Bible Story: Jesus Went to the Temple (Luke 2:41-52)Key Bible Verse: Colossians 3:20Connecting Points: Take turns pantomiming family rules while the rest of the family tries to guess the action. Say: "God's plan is for parents to lead their families. He wants children to listen to and obey their parents." Review the story about Jesus at the temple with His parents (Luke 2:41-52). Ask: "What can we learn from Jesus about obeying parents?" Read aloud Colossians 3:20. Ask: "When is it hard to obey what I say? Why do you think I have rules or say what you can and cannot do?" Pray, asking God to help your child obey what you say.
