Green Star
• Origin of the Standard
• How is it maintained / monitored
• Lead Agency
• Regions/areas of use
• Competing standards
![Page 6: Going Green Is it Worth it? Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre AIPC July 2010](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062500/5697bfad1a28abf838c9bd40/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Green Star
• Objectives of the Standard
• Key elements of the Standard
• Challenges or costs associated with the Standard
• Comparability of the Standard
• Evolution of the Standard
![Page 7: Going Green Is it Worth it? Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre AIPC July 2010](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062500/5697bfad1a28abf838c9bd40/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Origin of the Standard
• Green Building Council of Australia (Lead Agency)
• Objectives of GBCA to promote sustainable development
and the transition of the property industry towards
sustainability by promoting green building programs,
technologies and design practices.
![Page 8: Going Green Is it Worth it? Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre AIPC July 2010](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062500/5697bfad1a28abf838c9bd40/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Origin of the Standard
• Green Star was created by GBCA for use in Australia to
evaluate environmental initiatives of design, projects
and /or buildings on a number of criteria including energy
and water efficiency, indoor environment quality and
resource conservation.
• Built from BREEAM and LEED with Australian adaptation.
![Page 9: Going Green Is it Worth it? Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre AIPC July 2010](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062500/5697bfad1a28abf838c9bd40/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
How is it maintained/monitored
• Green star for the Convention Centres has been
developed as a design tool not an ongoing operational
tool and is still evolving.
• In Victoria and Australia other criteria are used such as
Green Globe, Resource Smart, Waste Wise, Water Wise,
and various Sustainability Victoria measures
![Page 10: Going Green Is it Worth it? Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre AIPC July 2010](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062500/5697bfad1a28abf838c9bd40/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Objectives of the Standard
• Establishment of a common language and standard of
measurement for green buildings
• To drive change in the building market by focussing on those
areas of environmental impact that are a direct consequence of
a building’s briefing, design , construction and maintenance.
i.e. those that can directly influenced by stakeholders
![Page 11: Going Green Is it Worth it? Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre AIPC July 2010](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062500/5697bfad1a28abf838c9bd40/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Key Elements
• Nine separate environmental impact categories
Management, Indoor Environment Quality,
Energy, Transport, Water, Materials,
Land Use and Ecology, Emissions and
Innovation
![Page 12: Going Green Is it Worth it? Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre AIPC July 2010](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062500/5697bfad1a28abf838c9bd40/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Key Elements
Each Category is made up of credits
Each credit addresses a particular initiative
Points are awarded within each credit
A percentage score for the category is determined
An environmental weighting is then applied.
![Page 13: Going Green Is it Worth it? Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre AIPC July 2010](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062500/5697bfad1a28abf838c9bd40/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

Key Elements
• The final green star rating is based on weighted category scores and NOT the total number of points
• These category scores are added together and the maximum possible is 100 plus up to five additional points for innovation
• Ratings range from one star to six stars. Only four stars and above are eligible for certification.
• Five stars represents Australian Excellence
• Six Stars recognises World Leadership
