Welcome3

Golcar Lily Day is seven. It seems very hard to believe. I remember it when it was just a baby and my how it’s grown!

We are planning to open in style this year as our favourite steam roller leads a procession of tractors, Morris dancers and a horse and cart through the village. We are lucky to have so many talented people in our village and we hope to celebrate their skills on this festival day.

Look out for our tree cosies this year. It’s been a very cold winter and we thought they deserved a treat. When a Golcar couple went to Helsinki and saw what they had done to decorate trees, they came home and said, “We can do that in Golcar!” Well we can and we have. I hope that everyone enjoys them.

We had a particularly sad event this year. Our very good friend Michael Thewlis died. Michael was one of the instigators of Golcar Lily Day and spent a lot of time and effort to make the day the success it has become. We miss him very much.

As usual Golcar Lily Day is the result of a year of hard work by a lot of people. This year we have included a summary of our accounts so that everyone can see where the money is spent. Often people ask about the money we make. As you can see we only make enough to cover our costs, then we start to work again for next year. We are particularly grateful to the “By and Buy Shop” who have supported us year by year by making a grant towards the cost of the

musicians. We have also been generously supported by Kirklees “Arts in the Neighbourhood” It is very good to know that they think Golcar Lily Day is as important as we do.

Have a lovely time.

This new service provides a hot 2-course meal every Wednesday to 30 residents in the Golcar area. Recipients are people who are unable to prepare a hot meal themselves. The meals, prepared by the chefs at the Golcar Lily in Bolster Moor, are delivered by volunteers — no one makes a profit from the service.

Would you, or someone you know, like to receive a meal? If so, contact Sharon or Lynn. The team is also keen to hear from anyone who would like to help deliver the meals — whether you are available every Wednesday or just occasionally. If you want to know more, give them a call.

11Golcar Village

The Team was reinvented in 1984 from Dads whose offspring were having a good time in a school based team. The style is NOT Cotswold (white clothing + crossed belts + hankies) NOR Border morris (rag coats + blackened faces + shouting) BUT North West Processional morris (Clogs and beads) developed from a village need to lay rushes on the church floor. Village churches had no wooden or flagged floors just earth. The church was also the village hall and a hospice and the floor was covered in bullrushes. These were replaced

regularly and this gave rise to a celebration still observed in Saddleworth, Whitworth, Sowerby bridge and Littleborough. After cutting the rushes they were paraded through the village with everyone following on behind and dancing ensued. Clogs were the footwear of the period and villages developed their own dances and styles. The old Lancashire and Cheshire counties were the main areas including STOCKPORT.

The current team is a mixed side who travel as far south as Kent and Somerset and as far north as Durham. This year we are accompanied by Persephone Morris, another North West Processional team from South of Leeds who are a women only dance team but with a mixed personnel band.

Golcar SingSunday 12 May, 2.45, Providence Methodist Church(In case of good weather, the Sing will be at Golcar JI&N School playing fields.)

Golcar Lily serviceSunday 12 May, 10.30, Providence Methodist Church

With Vintage Brass. Everyone welcome. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available after the service.

The original Golcar Sing started in 1905 at Golcar cricket field. It ran successfully until it finished in 1951 due to declining interest and the state of the platform. In 1969 there was a revival attempt but nothing came of it. Fortunately the recent revival in 2008 proved much more successful, and this year will mark the fifth new Golcar Sing.

The programme contains traditional hymns and 3 Choruses from Handel’s Messiah, accompanied by Huddersfield Wind Band. Singers from local choirs, churches and community groups are welcome to join the choir

for the event. Please bring a copy of ‘Messiah’ if you intend to sing in the choir. The organist will be George Marsden; Stewart Culpan will compere the event.

We hope as many people as possible will come along and support this community event. Please bring your own seating if the Sing is outdoors.

Golcar Ginnel Trail

Ginnels are a feature of the Colne Valley and are footpaths, usually between houses, and often include steps. Old Golcar, being built on the north side of the Colne Valley, has many houses built into the hill. Facing south these houses get the best of the light and many started life with a loom chamber on the top floor and living quarters below on either one or two floors. Colne Valley Museum is a perfect example of such a dwelling. Back before the times of motorised transport most people would have to walk and any shortcuts would be well used therefore ginnels and footpaths would have been invaluable. The Golcar Ginnel Trail starts at the main gate to St. John the Evangelist’s Church. Money for the erection of this building was granted from the Million Act. This was money set aside by the Government for building additional churches in different parts of the country and was part of a war indemnity paid by Austria after the Battle of Waterloo. St. John’s foundation stone was laid in 1828 and the church was dedicated in 1830.

Leaving the church and crossing the road one sees what looks like a large garage. This building was the carriage house for the “big house” which lies down Cliff Ash on the opposite side to the museum. Immediately the trail leads down some steps. Straight ahead one can see what looks like a row of one storey cottages. The storey that can be seen from the road probably started life as loom chambers, the back road giving easy access for moving equipment and pieces in and out of the building. The front of the cottages, if they could be seen, would appear as normal two storey dwellings. From there the trail zig-zags up and down the hill between Rock Fold and Handel Street, so

named by a Professor of music who once lived and worked in a house there, now demolished. Coming out onto James Street and crossing the road the next set of steps, leading onto Scarhouse Lane, has the nick name of Alphabet Steps which is somewhat misleading as there are 28 steps! After crossing Scarhouse Lane the footpath leads along Kiln Brow towards Scar Tip. This area was genuinely a tip many years ago and where, within living memory, people have dug up old bottles and pottery items. Now the trees have grown up and it has become a pleasant wooded area. The footpath crosses the end of Longcroft Street and continues over Nancie Bridge which is

16

Golcar Ginnel Trail17

a foot bridge over the railway line. Britannia Road is reached at the bottom of these steps. Turning right and following the railway line for awhile the footpath takes the next left turn down to the valley bottom. This unmade road is Ramsden Mill Lane and leads to what was Ramsden Mill. On the right of the road is an old farm and on the left is a fine example of a mill / dwelling. Once derelict it has been renovated without destroying its character or losing site of its former use. This mill / house would be the original home of the Ramsden family, a family with some entrepreneurial skills in that they saw a need for a fulling mill to service the pieces produced by the handloom weavers in the valley. Being in a prime position next to the River Colne they built a water mill for that purpose. The enterprise must have been successful as a larger and more modern family home was built right next to the mill / house. Across the canal there remains a building, disused now, that would have been the successor to the original fulling mill. Walking to the right along the canal bank the mill pond and the race,

from the river, can still be seen. The trail continues along the towpath until a footbridge is reached. This is one of several built over the canal to allow farmers to move animals from field to field. After crossing the bridge the footpath continues up the hill towards the viaduct at the base of which was once the sewage works for the Township of Golcar, a drab and smelly place to be avoided. Now in more enlightened times this area, called Appleyard, has been transformed into an attractive green space. Leaving the viaduct behind the trail leads upwards to pass Golcar Baptist Chapel on Chapel Lane. The old chapel was demolished in the early 1970s and the Sunday school building became the chapel. The pediment, with its inscription, was taken from the old chapel

and mounted on a plinth which can be seen beside the site of the original building. Emerging from Chapel Lane the trail turns left into Brook Lane and descends to New York Bottom. New York House is set at right angles to the road and a long and steep ginnel ascends up the side of the house and comes out at Clay Well beside a very large and strange looking building, part house, part mill, part farm and worth a second look. Turning left along Clay Well this lane changes its name to Small Lane at some point and number one can be spotted about halfway along on the left. Small Lane has its fair share of old Golcar properties and the last ginnel leads up the steps to come out at Colne Valley Museum and an impressive view of St. John’s steeple.

Milnsbridge Business Association

Milnsbridge is used by thousands of people every week who use its streets for nothing more than a short cut. The Milnsbridge Business Association has been formed to try and promote the village and surrounding areas in a positive manner and get people to ‘stop and shop’ rather than just using it as a cut through. Milnsbridge has almost 150 businesses, many of which are never even seen by passing traffic. The MBA is currently working on a website to promote the area and its businesses and this will be available soon. The website is designed to advertise local businesses and local events along with information for tourists and locals alike. This will be a great way of

connecting with the people locally and encouraging them to start using the village again! The MBA has a host of ideas for the future, ranging from having Christmas lights in the village to improved road signage to help promote the village centre as well as better parking facilities and local events like the Golcar Lily Day. The association is also creating connections with local schools and community organisations in order to help them and help the village. The MBA holds no boundaries to its potential and, with the drive of its members, Milnsbridge Village will once again be a vibrant area to stop and shop. With normal people at the helm it is certain that ideas won’t be pursued at great expense. They

will be carried out with planning and expertise and, more importantly, they will be done at the right price for the village and its people! The recent lengthy roadworks had a very dramatic impact on local trade and not just in Milnsbridge. Now that the bridge has been re-opened and the traffic is flowing once again, the MBA and its members are looking forward to a prosperous future and relishing the prospect of working with the local people. The MBA would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all who have supported its efforts since its inception, including local businesses, the local community and local councillors.

Bolster Moor

Bolster Moor Community Association (BMCA)Formed in 1999, we organise events and activities for the benefit of our community. Recent projects have included installing a heritage style clock at the local school, planting shrubs and bulbs around the village, organising an annual coach trip and much more. Can Can, our news letter, is

produced three times a year, and is now available on line as well as in a printed format. We are very keen to look after the environment and have organised monthly litter picks around the area, wearing our new Hi-vis vests with our logo on. Murphy, a friendly horse who lives locally, often comes along and helps out. He now has his own column in the newsletter!

The BMCA is open to anyone who lives, works or is interested in the village. We are a friendly, informal group and we meet once a month. New faces are always welcome.

We are now developing a new web site, so to find out more log on to ‘http://bolstermoor.org.uk’ or ring Andi Butler on 648023 email [email protected]
