It’s been hard to miss, but healthcare options in Tehachapi over the last three years have increased significantly. By the end of this year, residents will have at their fingertips, the best care in the history of the Tehachapi Valley. Yes, it has been that type of transformation, a transformation that started with a leap of faith. First, it was the approval of the bond measures to finance the construction of the new hospital. That building attracted a new partner a year ago in Adventist Health, who is actively working on opening the building after some inherited issues and code changes during construction. Over the last three years healthcare providers like Kaiser Perman-ente and Omni Family Health opened clinics in Tehachapi knowing that the level of hospital care was on the rise. In the process of expansion, those companies brought a new slate of options to an area that had been previously limited to local physicians. Those local physicians did and continue to do an outstanding job, recently one of those local physicians retired and his medical practice was purchased by Dignity Health, the fifth-largest health care system in the nation. The addition of local Dignity Health network doctors will greatly increase the options for care in Tehachapi. Healthcare is one of our largest growing sectors, the California Employment Development Department suggests that employment in the industry will increase by 25% in our area in the next 10 years. That not only means more jobs to boost our economy, but better care overall. Those providers that entered our healthcare boom early are seeing the benefits. Kaiser Permanente has already renovated their clinic once and now offers walk-in lab testing, a service that previously required an appointment or a trip to Bakersfield. It can now be done locally at your convenience. Omni Family Health’s Tehachapi success has led them to expand further into East Kern to provide services to residents that have gone without for far too long. Then there is the presence of healthy competition, the driving force behind any successful sector. Adventist Health and Dignity Health have a tremendous presence in the San Joaquin Valley and now they both have put down roots in Tehachapi. We’re glad to have them both and look forward to the care they will provide. In addition to physicians and clinics, new corporate partnerships with Walgreens and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs along with the recently-announced partnership with Walmart and Anthem means that prescriptions and certain over-the-counter healthcare purchases are covered and readily available. As we get older, these tools are an asset to our community. While we may have to wait a short time for the entire investment to pay off, that initial leap of faith with the hospital bond has opened a new market that is providing never-before available options for local healthcare. As we continue to pursue quality of life initiatives, I can’t think of anything more important than that.

Tall Tales from the Hiring Process: Employers Spot Résumé LiesAug 28 2018 - Gail Cecchettini Whaley, CalChamber Senior Employment Law Counsel

The available labor pool is tightening, and you may be eager to fill empty or new positions at your business. But, this eagerness shouldn’t cause you to rush the recruitment process. According to a report from Career Builder, three-quarters of hiring managers have caught job seekers lying on their résumés. In fact, some résumés lacked any believability.

The hiring process can be long and frustrating – reading résumés, checking references and interviewing candidates requires significant time and effort. Applicant deception or résumé padding during the hiring process only complicates the process.

Given that nearly one in four hiring managers said that they spend less than 30 seconds reviewing a résumé – and nearly 40 percent spend less than a minute – spotting résumé fraud is critical to the hiring process.

Can this Be True?Hiring managers shared some notable résumé examples that either seemed far-fetched or were instant deal breakers:

• An applicant listed 40 different jobs in one year.• An applicant applied for a job for which they were vastly unqualified (e.g. grocery store shelf-stocker applying for a physician

position).• An applicant referred to having “as many marriages as jobs.”• An applicant stated at the bottom of their résumé that they do not like babies or puppies• An applicant had the same employment dates for every job listed.

Mind Your P’s and Q’sAn implausible résumé isn’t the only problem. Three out of four employers said that typos or bad grammar landed a résumé in the “no hire” pile, as well as other unprofessional mistakes. For instance, one employer complained that an applicant’s résumé had a different font type for every sentence. Another applicant’s résumé was only one sentence.

The seven most common résumé mistakes that are instant deal breakers are:

• Typos or bad grammar: 77 percent• Unprofessional email address: 35 percent• Résumé without quantifiable results: 34 percent• Résumé with long paragraphs of text: 25 percent• Résumé is generic, not customized to company: 18 percent• Résumé is more than two pages: 17 percent• No cover letter with résumé: 10 percent

7 Budgeting Basics for Small Business OwnersSCORE -Courtney Nagle

So, you’ve taken the plunge and started your small business, now what? It’s important to make sure you set yourself up for success. One of the ways to do that is to make sure you have a budget that will keep your finances in order.

Check out these seven budgeting basics for small business owners.

1. Keep Your Small Business Finances Out of Your Personal Finances This one is huge! Co-mingling business and personal money may seem easier, but it can lead to complications down the road. Keep a record of your business expenses to take advantage of available tax benefits. It also can be risky to use personal money to fund your business as it increases your personal liability. Personal and business finances are equally important for success, and keeping them separate will help.

2. List your ExpensesNext, you’ll need to know exactly how much your business is going to cost to run daily and monthly. List out all your expenses, rent, employees, supplies, services, etc. Make short-term and long-term projections with your income.

3. Budget for Your WantsIf you’re planning ways to improve your business, be sure to budget for them, and save until you can afford them. If they are not necessary for your business to run well, there’s no need for you to go into debt.

4. Know What to Expect from Your Business IncomeRelying on your business to provide for your family takes some planning and knowing exactly how much money to expect each month. If you have no idea how much money will come in, then there’s no way to budget and allocate your money to certain things.

5. Set a Savings Goal for Expansion or SecurityStart a savings plan for your business. In order to expand, hire more people, and provide security for your family, it’s impor-tant for small business owners to set aside small amounts of money to have long-term financial health. Small business owners often face difficulty saving money, since many have very tight budgets when they start. Saving from the beginning will help ensure you have some cushion in tough months.

6. Look for Areas Where You Can Cut CostsEfficiency and frugality will help your small business succeed. I recommend taking inventory of your expenses every month and considering areas where you can cut costs, not with cutting quality. I’m not advising cutting corners, but there are ways to save money and run your business efficiently without affecting quality of your product or service.

7. Be RealisticMake sure you have realistic expectations for your income and your expenses. Do your research, and don’t expand too quickly.Budgeting is essential for your small business success. It’s important to keep your personal finances separate from your busi-ness finances so that you know exactly where your money is going and are able to easily provide documentation for your business taxes.
