From an Alberta perspective, it started with “one team.” Alberta was a small but significant presence at BIO, held June 3-6, 2019 in Philadelphia, PA and would not have been possible without so many generous sponsors (see list below). Led by BioAlberta, this year we teamed up with our partners to showcase Alberta’s research capacity, extensive data assets, and most of all, our ability to partner and collaborate. Representatives from University of Calgary, Alberta Real World Evidence Consortium, Alberta Clinical Trials Networks, Alberta Innovates and BioAlberta worked the Alberta Booth in the Canada Pavilion answering questions about Alberta’s capacity and encouraging delegates to come to Alberta. On Tuesday afternoon, the University of Alberta Hospital Foundation took the stage (literally) to showcase three partnerships with global companies – Boehringer Ingelheim, Takeda and Novo Nordisk – to demonstrate Alberta’s capacity in the real world evidence space. On Tuesday evening at the Alberta Reception, Team Alberta again put its best foot forward and welcomed over 150 guests in a relaxed atmosphere. There was tremendous energy in the room as our team provided the typical Alberta hospitality that attendees have come to expect. We received many positive comments about the reception and significant interest in the Alberta companies in attendance including Pacylyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. from Edmonton and Nanostics Inc., a medical device and biotechnology company from Calgary. There were also many favourable comments about the recent Parvus Therapeutics (a biopharmaceutical company from Calgary) partnership with Genentech (a biotech subsidiary of Roche based in San Francisco, CA), which is being viewed as a bellwether for Canadian biotech. Now the real work begins. The intensity of BIO and the show floor now transforms into follow up, engagement with those who were interested in what Alberta can offer and planning for BIO 2020. We will begin working with our partners over the summer on the program we want to build and lobby to have a political presence in 2020. It’s important for Alberta decision makers to understand that research and commercialization activities in the life sciences sector are extremely competitive and global - an area where we need to be at our best as we compete with emerging countries such as Korea.
