A Tribute and a Farewell

JR and I would like to dedicate this month’s article to Jim and CaroleWaddell. As you are all aware they have moved to Colorado. If youmissed the April Chapter meeting, it was a tear-jerker! We are pleased tosend them off with Carole in better health and a successful surgery be-hind her!

Jim and Carole arrived in this Chapter from Colorado about 5 years ago.It was a move for Jim’s work. Little did the chapter know how importantthese two people would be to the chapter! Since we got involved, Jimand Carole have always been there when anything has been asked for,even if Carole did want to put flamingos on everything. Secretly, I amcertain that Carole believes that the F starts for flamingo! We were soimpressed when Jim was offering to take riders in his back seat to helpthem with their skills. The comments of those experienced riders thattook him up on his offer was always that they were surprised at what theylearned. Just ask Joy about riding in Jim’s backseat, we have herscreams on video. It was a natural that Jim would become our ChapterEducator! His articles were helpful as were his safety speeches, but hisPLP skills are incredible!

Carole loved being involved with the members! She was a natural for themembership chairman. She was that warm and welcoming face thatgreeted you when you came to your first meeting. She helped design thewelcome brochure for the chapter, that was a fun and memorable experi-ence! She found postcards to send to members that had chapter photoson the front. But Carole was always on the hunt to find different ways toidentify the chapter. We put her on the quest to find chapter shirts. Shefound them and then help design them and made certain those vendorsdid their jobs! We thank her for our classy polo and scenic t-shirts, andevery time you look at that design, Carole’s signature is in the picture,just look for the flamingo wearing the sailor hat.

We will all miss not having them at our events, but just remember, wehave a new “hotel” to stay in when we travel to Colorado, and I’m surethe light will always be on for us!

RISK! We are all aware that we participate in an activity that has, at itsbest, some risk. At its worst, however, it can be very dangerous. Somesituations we can plan for and others we cannot. Or can we? This ridingseason has barely begun and our list of stories (to tell, and retell) seemso long it is hard to comprehend.

All of these incidents sound bad and all of them were bad at the time.These events share a common thread. Had even the slightest thing beendifferent, they could have turned out worse. I believe they did not turnout worse partly because of luck but more importantly because of ourpreparedness.

Our preparedness takes many forms. We dress to provide the most pro-tection for our bodies that the weather will allow. It is our choice to ride ingroups, thereby improving our odds on the road. We use self-talk whichallows us to think our way through a high risk situation and helps to giveus the “calm” confidence to apply what we have learned in rider educa-tion classes. We practice our skills. Riders and Co-riders always get offthe bike while refueling. After a long day of riding there is the extra 15minutes spent cleaning and maintaining our “prize possession” so it isready for the next trip. We practice our skills. Routes are carefullyplanned. Maps are carefully consulted before and during our trip. Wetalk with other riders and learn their “tricks”. We practice our skills. Wereview our habits and exchange them for better ones.

If we have any message in these words (practice skills), it is to preparefor as many possibilities as you can, because the unexpected will hap-pen. If we have practiced well and if our habits are good and we sticktogether maybe our luck will continue. Practice. Practice. Practice.

Kickstand. This should be done on a routine basis for your safety and the safety of others.

This is the month for the Region F Rally in Ogdon Utah. I hope many of you havebeen able to schedule your time so you can take part in all the FUN the Californiamembers will be having in Utah. Besides all the activities that are planned overMay 24th through 26th there are great places to ride in every direction.

April has finished and it had the most chapter rides of any month thisyear. Pat & I hope to see many of you at CA2E’s Raisin’ Cane In Fresnoride on May 5th. That is the only chapter ride scheduled in May.

The California District Goodie Store has a solution for all of you that areparticipating in the Rider Education Program and are at Level II,III or IV.We have been asked by many members: “What do I hang this year baron that I received for my renewal?” The answer is, District has a pin thatyour Year Bars can be hung from. The head pin has printed on it “YEARSRENEWED”. It has a black background with gold colored lettering andthe correctly placed holes to hang those hanger bars from. They cost$1.75 per pin plus postage.

It would be best for chapters to order the number they need for theirmembers at one time to keep the cost of postage down. If you don’t havea chapter to order them through they will be available at the District Rallyin Foster City.

Pat & I are pleased to welcome two new members to the California Dis-trict Staff. On May 1st Jerry & Patricia Borge will become your DistrictEducators. Jerry & Patricia have been active in the Rider Education Pro-gram for many years. First as CD & Sr. CD for CA2N and later theyserved as Chapter Educators. CA2N has had excellent participation inthe Rider Education Program. We are sure they will do a great job asCalifornia’s new District Educators.

Yeah right!! $$$$$$$ and #4 the gold wing an-gel! #11 all them bikers!!! But it is still family and you can still count on themto come to the rescue and no one can testify better then the Waddells that thetheme for GWRRA is family and that truly is what you all have turned out tobe and not a bunch of strangers. You have spent the past month holding ourhands and hugging us and hugging us to pieces and now we get to share youwith our wonderful daughters, Lisa and Alison and they too understand thefamily part of our playtime relationship. As a family you came in teams without bidding and packed us to get us out of town and on our way to Colorado.I just hope that the CO chapter unpacks us ‘cause we will never find any thingagain. The boxes look fairly well marked but - you know how screwed upsome family members can get........... To continue. As a FAMILY, you werethere with more hugs and help when my illness screwed up my head andsent me over the edge which is when the famous F troup Calvary stepped in,not once, but twice to find me and pluck me from the perils of darkness.Thanks Jo and Doug, Anita, Joyce and Rick, I think I would still be out therewalking if it weren’t for all you good guys and baby, the boots I had on sureweren’t made for walkin’.

Now folks, even the best of families is goin to say “ok, get your act together,no more of this sillysalligas. You ARE pushing your luck. But you know, thistime the Waddell luck is really holding. BIG TIME. I think I be living proof ofthat with the emphasis on the living!! You sat with Jim, Lisa and Alison in thehospital each time and held their hands, hugged them and stood up andcheered when the neurosurgeon said I would soon be giving you a hard timeagain. (He is not a proponent of motorcycle riding!!) I told him about Jimearning his angel wings and now you are ALL GOING TO GET THEM..

Believe it or not, I am now at home and PS folks, The ice cream social thatyou had for me at the hospital last night was absolutely the bestest party ofmy life ‘cause I spent the whole day anticipating it and ‘cause MY FAMILYgave it for me. Thanks to every one that stopped by all week to visit, leavegifts, cards and flowers. We love you each and everyone. F A M I L Y. Thevery bestest word in any language, and when you add “my” or “our” in front it,look at the magic you have created.

We expect to be leaving next week to go back to Colorado but trust me.Gone does not mean forgotten. It will be a continual “open house” for ourCA-GWRRA FAMILY. The Waddell family, Jim, Carole, Lisa and Alison thank their CA-GWRRAFAMILY from the bottom of their hearts for five wonderful years spent inSD. We knew we were going back but never dreamed that it would be sohard. We love you each and everyone. Hope every one will make the gettogether at Rae and Carmen’s’ Sun afternoon.. See you there. The docsays that I will make it, he told Jim that I might be a little bit more emotionalfor awhile.........................Oh well, there goes that good, bad, and the uglything again. It may be several months before I can ride the wing but I stillhave the 4wheel wing, Esmeralda, and she has a top to keep me dry andAC to keep me cool and I don’t have to plug in for heat. We might evenshow up at the rallies in UT and CA in her. You all know that I have neverbeen one to complain about comfort!!! I am sure we will be at the CO onein Sep so you all come on down to that one. ! nbsp; Our “open house”policy will be in effect for the month of July for all you people wonderingaround before/after WingDing. Sedona Ride: Hey gang – Here is the information you have beenwaiting for on the ride to Sedona June 14-16. We will be leaving fromMcD’s, Escondido the 14th at 8 AM. This year we will stay in Williams,AZ. And on Saturday the 15th we will ride to Sedona and Jerome leav-ing plenty of time to look around and shop at each place.We will be staying at the Motel 6 in Williams. ROAD SIGNSBy

The highway department spends a lot of bucks posting “Warning” signsalong the roadside that most other drivers don’t hardly bother looking atanyway. As Riders though, we pay attention to those signs AND the unin-tentional signs that are present all over the highway.

Big patches of brake skidmarks leading up to an intersection or coming upon a freeway ramp tell us that something unexpected happens there on aregular basis. Be on the lookout and give yourself some extra followingdistance. A bunch of skidmarks right at the beginning of a curve indicatesa curve that will be sharper than it appears. Yellow centerlines that aremostly worn away in the middle of a curve give us a warning that manycars drift over that line as they come through the curve. – Be ready for‘em! As you approach each curve scan for the fuzzy look of gravel, andplan your path all the way through the curve and try to avoid the biggerareas of patching tar. The road crews are always trying different formulas;some of them more slippery and some of them less… but all of them witha different friction factor. Expect the unexpected!

When riding on a weekend we can smell every barbecue and can even tellwhat someone is cooking around the next bend in the road. Using thatsense of smell, stay aware of the aromas on the breeze. If the wind is justright, can you smell the oil spill on that next curve? When there is meltingsnow or yesterday’s rainwater draining across the road and the tempera-ture is hanging around the low thirties, you can have wet water on thesunny side of the road and black ice, that looks just like water on theshady side. Come the day when you do get onto that oil or ice, pull in theclutch immediately, don’t touch the brakes, don’t even blink and try to floatthrough it in a straight line. If you are lucky, then you can start breathingagain.

In wet weather, painted lines and arrows in the road can be slick. Howdeep are the puddles ahead? Well, how big are the splashes that arebeing made by the cars in front of you? At night, are there any darker orlighter spots in the roadway that shouldn’t be there? Any signs of con-struction can indicate the possible presence of edge traps that can dropyou in a flash, loose gravel, oiled roads or steel trench plates… You know,those portable ice skating rinks!

Constant Surface Appraisal and a big healthy following distance are keysto keeping the Shiny Side Up! Be aware, read ALL of the road signsand RIDE SAFE!!!
