“La Cage aux Folles” at The Golden Apple Dinner Theatre is a bright and colorful musical, blending some interesting costumes, genuine story-telling songs and an important message about being ourselves. While the opening was a bit slow, John Visser’s musical direction pulled it all together. This is a show about a clash of cultures, and about the personal needs of those who are gay on the French Riviera. One theme repeated over and over was the song, “We Are What We Are.”

The chorus, Les Cagelles, presents some great choreog-raphy under the direction of Dewayne Barrett. Barrett is the director of the show as well as an important member of Les Cagelles. Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein have

written a joyful musical, which, at the same time, expresses some of the sadness experienced by those who dare to be different. They have taken a half dozen musical themes, reworded them and returned to them throughout the show.

Some very personal numbers are quite touching, espe-cially as Albin, the star of the “Folles” and the lover of Georges, the owner of the club, has to face rejection as she/he is put on the shelf when there is a need to enter-tain the future in-laws of Jean-Michele, who has fallen in love with the girl of his dreams.
