Total Business Visited:
Types of Businesses Visited: fruit and vegetable stand, cash store (convenience store), upholstery, barber
shop, hair salon, funeral home, education centre (daycare), fishery, shoe repair and manufacturer, and butcher.
Research and Development: To provide additional value to businesses in Khayelitsha , the 2011 micro-
enterprise team conducted site visits to various small business resources in the Cape Town area. This
information will assist Golden Future in improving the delivery of the micro-enterprise module in future years of
the project. The research and development conducted included:
• Site visits to local banks including: ABSA, Standard, Nedbank, and FNB bank.
• One-on-one meeting with South African Revenue Service (SARS) Small Business expert
• Participated in a tax seminar at the SARS to inquire about the taxation issues for small businesses
• Site visit to The Business Centre
• One-on-one meeting with The Business Centre’s Entrepreneur in Residence
• Explored various teaching methods for in-class entrepreneurship module at Usasazo High School

Business Description: Upholstery services including: furniture, seats, car/bus leather/vinyl, car roof trimming and seals, sofas
and lounge seats, canvas foam covers, padding, springs, webbing, and fabric or leather covers.

Business Challenges:
• High cost of materials

Business Challenges:
• Safety and robbery
• Securing products at wholesale cost
• Difficulty finding honest non-family member workers
• Lack of employees hinders the owner’s ability to travel and purchase new stock
Future Goals: Expansion of business including:
• Larger facility
• Organized transportation to purchase stock
• Expand product offerings to include fuel in winter months (paraffin)
• Register business
Additional Information: The micro-enterprise team discussed the opportunity to carpool with other retailers in the area to reduce transportation expenses and save with bulk purchases. Golden Future survey completed by owner.
