SENIOR CORNER The year that many of you from Class of 2016 have been anticipating. This column is here to inform you about any school related activities happening that may be important or to inform you about any events where you can have fun. Here are a list of events that you may be interested in.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Buy a yearbook. If you wait to buy one until the end of the year, you will only be hurting your wallet because prices are not going down. Instead they are just doing the opposite. There is a flyer attached to this quarter’s newsletter. Tear it and turn it in with your money to receive a much better value while the current price last. The next 100 people to purchase a yearbook will receive a coupon that will entitle them to free Queso at Moe’s Southwest Grill.

DID YOU KNOW? Did You Know” is a new segment to the newsletter that we are introducing. Bringing to you the many fascinating facts from around the world.

• Did you know that the average human can drink 20,000 gallons of water in their life time?

• Did you know that the average person speaks approximately 5,000 words a day, but 80 percent of those words are self-talk.

• The can opener was invented 48 years after cans were introduced.

SPORTSFreshman football went undefeated this season The freshmen football team and their coaches had an undefeated season going 8-0. They are the first team to go to undefeated in the school’s history! “This group of young men have worked hard all summer and all season to get here, this has been a season to remember.” said Coach Jordan Erickson.

MY EXPERIENCE AT STEM CAMPBy Lindsay Destine

Q: What is STEM Camp? STEM Camp is a program held at FGCU that allows kids, that wouldn’t usually get the opportunity, to get to know more about STEM fields, information about colleges, etc. It gives them exposure to things like scholarships, and internships at companies like Algenol, which is a biofuel company.

Q: Did you know what awaited you once you got there? Yeah, I did. I did my research, and asked someone who attended the year before how his or her experience went. During the course of the camp, I knew that our group would be going to the Kennedy Space Center, visiting marine labs, exploring multiple career options, talking to a diverse group of professionals, building miniature solar race carts, improving on our test taking skills, and math in general, for tests like the SAT/ACT.

Q: Was there something you were really looking forward to? Leaving home for two weeks and getting to stay in a college dorm. Oh, and the trip to NASA! Going there had been on my bucket list since I was like 8.

Q: Did you get along with everyone? Yeah. I’m a very gregarious person; I love talking. I had my own group of people I hung out with every day. Composed of people I knew from school, one of my roommates, and some other people I had begun to get closer to over the course of the camp. The counselors were funny, and we always cracked jokes at one another. On the bus ride to NASA, they kept taking pictures of us sleeping, and uploading it to the programs Facebook page. We all laughed about it the next day. On the really long bus ride back from NASA, everyone was singing songs, laughing and cracking jokes. Everyone got along really well, it felt like a family to me.

Q: You mentioned having roommates... Did you end up liking the roommates you had? Yeah, I did. I actually loved my roommates, we got along really well, and I still talk to one of them frequently. The first night we stayed up talking, and getting to know each other. They were pretty funny and friendly, and I thought it was pretty cool that we were all around the same age.

Q: What was your daily routine? Was there any part of the day you hated the most, and any part of the day you loved the most? I hated the mornings the most. I wasn’t a morning person to begin with so waking up was literally the hardest thing for me every morning. There was only one bathroom, and every morning it was a competition between my roommates and me to see who could get into the shower first. I always lost, though. Our daily routine went like this: Every morning we would: Walk to the dining hall, for an all-you-can-eat breakfast

buffet. Walk to our math class, and learn for 4 hours. Walk back. Do some group activity/career exploring, and eat dinner afterwards. Eat dinner and then mess around in the playroom until bedtime. The Group Activities/Career Exploring was always my favorite part of the day. Actually, breakfast and dinner were my favorite parts of the day. I swear I gained like 3 pounds.

Q: What are some things about the camp did you appreciate? The fieldtrips—they helped me cross some things off my bucket list. I never knew crabs could be the size of a penny. I even held one, although it took so much courage to not scream while it crawled around my palm. I also appreciated all the careers we were exposed to. We explored tons of jobs in the Medical field, the Science Field, the Engineering field, and the Math field. We were able to visit all the classrooms that taught those specific subjects, and we always were fortunate enough to have a guest speaker that would tell us about the job they worked, and how they got to where they were now. It was pretty inspiring.

Q: How did you feel after the camp came to a close? After camp ended, I was pretty satisfied with my experience. I made new friends, became stronger in my weakest subject, learned and experienced new things, and now had an inkling about what I wanted to do in my life. It was so fun, and it was a great opportunity. Those two weeks of my life I will never forget.
