island workouts
If you enjoy exercising outside, the relatively small size of St. Simons Island makes walking, running or biking an ideal way to see the area. Many popular attractions are connected by bike paths and are located within short distances of one another. The beaches of St. Simons Island also provide an ideal place to walk or run, especially during low tides. The following are some popular routes between easily recognizable landmarks. Create your own customized workout by connecting any of these routes. The map on page 42 highlights the bike trail in blue.
(All distances are approximate.) Beach runs do need to be planned around the tides. Please see Tide Tables on page 44.

Five flags have claimed this twelve-mile island as their own, as well as countless generations of native tribes, each leaving their indelible mark on the Island. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1736 under the command of General James Edward Oglethorpe who established Fort Frederica. Since that time, the Island
has seen the rise and fall of plantations, the growth of the lumber industry in the aftermath of the Civil War, and finally the emergence of a fashionable vacation retreat. Many of the historic landmarks have been lovingly restored and maintained and are a great addition to any St. Simons visit!
St. Simons Island’s history has been punctuated by conquest and
acquisition during times of political turmoil, due to its strategic
geography.

Christ Church, Frederica is located in a serene setting formed by native live oaks, holly and cedar trees. On the site of Christ Church, nestled among huge oak trees on the north end of the Island, John and Charles Wesley preached before returning to England found the Methodist Church.
The first church was built in 1820 but was partially destroyed by Union troops during the Civil War. In 1884, Anson Phelps Dodge, Jr., built the present structure in memory of his wife, Ellen. Today, this beautiful church is home to an active Episcopal congregation.

In the early 1700s, Georgia was the epicenter of a centuries-old conflict between Spain and Britain. In 1736, James Oglethorpe established Fort Frederica to protect his southern boundary. Colonists from England, Scotland and the Germany came to Frederica to support the endeavor.
Today, the archeological remnants of Frederica are protected by the National Park Service. The Museum Store carries a variety of colonial toys and children’s books, including Joyce Blackburn’s Bloody Summer of 1742 and Phoebe’s Diary, which capture life at Fort Frederica from the perspective of children.

Located near the village and pier, the St. Simons Island Lighthouse is one of only five surviving light towers in Georgia.
The first lighthouse (1810) was built by James Gould of Massachusetts who became the first lighthouse keeper. That structure was destroyed by Confederate forces in 1862 to prevent the beacon’s use by Federal troops. The current lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper’s dwelling were built in 1872. The red-brick dwelling, a unique Victorian design which draws the eye upward to the tower, houses a museum and gift shop.
