Senior Advisory
Council.
Notes from the Council Meetings…….
October 2014
Quest Speaker Janice Caughlan, Human Resource Director at CAC, informed the Council that all
campuses of Community Action will be smoke free beginning January 1, 2015. This will mean that
smokers must move off the property to smoke—for example out to the street.
The Baked Goods Auction was the best one ever bringing in nearly $5,000.
4 applications were received for 2 vacant council seats. Janice Tackett and Yvonne Landrum were elected
to the vacant seats.
The Council was asked to help inform seniors that vehicles must have a handicapped placard to park in the
handicapped parking spots. Drivers can be ticketed if they are parked in those spaces without a placard. If
anyone has questions about how to get a handicapped placard, refer them to Shelley in the office.

CAC Home Energy Assistance Program
Regulated gas and electric: The utility must be off or a disconnect notice received. Households may receive up to $175 total. The $175 payment will stop disconnection, transfer or restore services for both regulated utilities, or establish new service. This is a one-time benefit and both utilities must be taken care of at the time of application.
Non-regulated electric: The utility must be off or a disconnect notice received. Households may receive up to $450. The $450 can be used to stop disconnection, transfer or restore service, or establish new service.
Co-Pay: If the $175 or $450 is not enough to cover the emergency, the customer must pay the co-pay. Documentation showing the co-pay was paid must be received before the application can be completed.
Bulk Fuel: Households may receive a delivery of bulk fuel if they have ten (10) days or less supply of fuel (or 25% or less tank capacity). Maximum delivery for coal or wood is $350, or $750 maximum delivery for propane/bottled gas, fuel oil or kerosene.
Existing Credits: Bulk fuel customers must SELECT a vendor and establish an account prior to their appointment. Bulk fuel customers must make contact with their bulk fuel vendor prior to their appointment to see if a State HEAP benefit has been applied. If a credit exists on the account large enough to provide a delivery of fuel, then then no emergency exists, and the household is ineligible for emergency assistance at that time.
Furnace Repair: The WCP can also assist homeowners with the repair of primary heating systems up to $175 provided the repair restores service.

The Winter Crisis Program is a federally funded program designed to help eligible Ohioans meet the rising cost of home heating during the winter months. Applicants must meet 175% of Federal Poverty Guidelines. The WCP provides financial assistance to income-eligible households that are threatened with disconnection of their heating source; have already had service disconnected; need to establish new service or pay to transfer service; or in the case of bulk fuel customers, only have 10 days or less supply (or 25 % or less of tank capacity) on hand. vides a free cell phone and airtime each month for Income-eligible customers. Thanks to SafeLink, Lifeline Tele-
phone Assistance Program, which has been around for years, is now available for wireless phones. Please Note:
Customers who receive Lifeline Telephone Assistance on their home phone are ineligible for a free cell phone.
Customers may receive only one phone per household. Customers are eligible if they
receive benefits from one of the following programs: Section 8, Medicaid, Food
Stamps, SSI, Free School Lunch, General Assistance/Disability, HEAP, SSDI, OWF,
or TANF. TracFone Wireless pays for the phones and the cost of promoting its Safe-
Link Program to make sure eligible consumers know about the program. Ohio cus-
tomers receive 68 free minutes each month and the minutes are added automatically to
their phone during the first week of each month. More information is available by
contacting the Community Action Committee of Pike County Social Services
Department at (740) 289-2371, The Pike County Senior Center at
(740) 947-5555, or TDD (740) 289-2608.
In addition, you can visit www.safelinkwireless.com
