Golden proportion : a tool inevaluation of facial esthetics

►The quest for beauty has been expressed byevery human culture, Many factorsinfluence the perception of beauty

►Beautiful faces have ideal facial proportion.Ideal proportion is directly related to divineproportion also known as Phi



►Phi is present in the basic building blocks of a human’s skeletal structure. Even the

human concept of beauty seems to be

entirely built on the concept of Phi. Thosefaces that we find most attractive tend tohave ratios that are perfectly in tune with

the Golden Proportion which is 1: 1.618



►Dentists are not only scientists but "artists"of the dentition. It is each dentist'sobligation to create uniform harmony in

each patient's dentition in relationship totheir face. Prosthodontists mainly deal withaesthetics of the dentition the beauty of

which can be gauged in the background of awell proportioned face.



Purpose :

►The purpose of the study was to analyzemanually the validity of golden proportion inbeautiful faces of Indian origin. Selected

faces were analyzed on the basis of goldenproportion and verified in relation to otherparameters of esthetics.



Methodology :

►Pictures of famous Indian film stars wereselected

►Selection was made based on popularityamong youngsters



Parameters used to measure goldenproportion among the subjects :

►1. Distance from forehead to chin : distancefrom forehead to nose

►2. Width of lips : width of lateral borders of nose

►3. Ratio of visible width of upper anteriorteeth - width of central incisor : width of lateral incisor : width of canine



Other parameters of esthetics - evaluated toverify the relation of golden proportion withesthetics:

►Buccal corridor : is the space measured frommesial line angle of the maxillary 1st pre molar tothe interior portion of the commissure of lips.

Smaller and broader space is more attractive thanlonger and narrower one

►Ratio of lower third of face : distance fromsub nasale to incisal edges of upper incisorsis 1/3 of the length from upper lip to lowerborder of chin

►Midline coincidence :



►Smile curve : The curvature of the maxillary

incisal edges coincides with or parallels the borderof lower lip on smiling in optimal smile.

►Presence of equilateral triangle : intercanthalline, lines from the outer canthus to mid point of chin join to form equilateral triangle in esthetically

appearing faces

Results :

►In subjects whom the measured facialproportions were close to the goldenproportion, the other parameters of esthetic

face were also present unlike in subjectswere golden proportion did not exist.

►Hence golden proportion can be used as a

tool in evaluating beauty



Conclusion

Disproportionate human faces are less

appealing, whereas faces with

proportionate features are acceptableif not always beautiful.



A divenly proportioned face is timeless and ageless
