Take note of the nearest lifebuoy ring and report if missing/damaged. 5. Children love water so constant and uninterrupted supervision is essential. 6. Narrow roads Although the national road infrastructure has been greatly improved in recent years, many local roads are still very narrow and have no hard shoulderextra road space to the side. You could encounter ab- solutely anything around any bend, i.e. farm traffic - including animals on the road, horse and riders, tractors towing trailers, grass cut- ting machines, slurry tanks etc, and large milk tankers and other big lorries, camper vans and caravans, down to large groups of cyclists travelling together, so drive with absolute care and attention and expect everything. Also remember that there are a large number of non native speaking visitors to this part of the world during the summer months, and they may not fully understand the road signs and many of them may be used to driving on the other side of the road. Also as the government and councils continue to improve the infrastructure there are lots of stop/start and contraflow areas with work in progress. Be patient, youll get there eventually! Road Safety - Summer in West Cork.

Narrow roads Although the national road infrastructure has been greatly improved in recent years, many local roads are still very narrow and have no ‘hard shoulder’ – extra road space to the side. You could encounter ab-solutely anything around any bend, i.e. farm traffic -

Goleen GAA: Saturday evening last had us travelling to Church Cross to face Randal Og in our second game in the “Bandon Co-Op West Cork JB championship round robin series”. Following a pulsating victory over Bantry Blues the previous week – we knew that this was not going to be an easy task as both teams are adversaries of old. As it transpired it was tit for tat for the hour with no quarter asked for or given. The short whistle saw us ahead by

the bare minimum 0-04 to 0-03 thanks to the boot of Darren O’Donovan who opened the scoring when he converted a 45 in the 5th minute and proceeded to tack on further points in the 9th 11th & 17th minutes, with Randal’s replying in 2nd 13th & 14th. On the resumption Darren once again raised a white flag when he converted a free in the 31st minute and another in the 36th. Randal’s replied with points in the 33rd & 38th minutes and in the 41st they land-ed what many considered to be a fatal blow when they raised a green flag to leave us trailing 1-05 to 0-06. Momentum was swinging their way but our warriors dug deep and the effort was rewarded when Shane O’Leary slotted over an excellent point in the 44th minute, and when one of our young guns Mi-chael Sheehan slotted over another exquisite gem in the 49th minute parity was restored at 0-08 to 1-05 and remained so to the final whistle. Being honest this is one we left behind – but nothing that Geno [and his Roghnoiri: Micheal Carey, Cornelius Coughlan, Gerard O’Donovan, Richie Barry] cannot rectify with an all out commitment from every one. Panel: Danny Cullinane, John Cullinane, Tadhg Cullinane, David Farrell, Chris Kennedy, Ronan Kennedy, Andrew Murphy, Daniel O’Callaghan, An-drew O’Connor, Darren O’Donovan, Jack O’Driscoll, David O’Leary, Shane O’Leary, Jimmy O’Re-gan, Michael O’Reilly, Padraig Reidy, Brendan Scully, James Scully, Patrick Scully, Paudie Scully, Kieran Sheehan, Michael Sheehan, Sean Sheehan. John Sup-ple. Looking forward we have one game to play in this championship against Newcestown – Bantry have two v Newcestown and Randal’s and the current position is: (see table, right) So as far as we are concerned we are still in melting pot and our fate is in our own hands where two more victories would see us land this coveted West Cork crown for only the third time in our Parish history. Belated congratulations to Patrick Scully who recently celebrated a mile stone Birthday and to our now stalwart centre back Jack O’Driscoll who is driving on with his new licence. We sincerely hope that Danny Cullinane will soon be able to discard the crutches and re-join his comrades on the field of battle. At time of going to press our next confirmed outing is on Saturday 29th June in Kilmur-ray at 7pm when we take on Abbey Rovers in the quarter final of the Cork County Junior B Football championship but check locally before you head off.
