NOTES FROM OUR GOLF PRO By Bob Reichle

The golf course is green, standing at attention, and

the start of our 2018 golfing season will soon lead into

full swing. The sleepy days of spring are about to

come to a close, making way for the busy days of

summer.

For those of you that are lucky enough to live locally,

you should now start planning ahead for golf play…

especially if you’ve gotten used to just showing up

and teeing off. On most days, in the early spring, it’s

not a problem, however: with summer vacation just

around the corner, you may be surprised at how busy

our little facility becomes. If you’re considering a spur-

of-the-moment round of golf...do yourself a favor, as

well as us, by calling the shop to check on availability.

All members may make tee times two weeks in ad-

vance. If you plan ahead, in most cases, you will al-

ways be able to reserve times to your liking. Occasion-

ally throughout the season we host Member and Non

Member (Charity) events. If they fall on a weekend

we will always accommodate member play by hav-

ing a morning shotgun start. This allows us to facilitate

as many players as we can for 18 holes yet still be

able to clear the course to accommodate the after-

noon tournament. Dates for these particular days are

listed on our yearly calendar.

Please give us a call and allow me, Chris or Glenn to

help you plan your next visit to your Country Club in

the Mountains. We’re looking forward to a great golf-

ing season here at Sequoia Woods.

GOLF HOURS FOR MAY (weather permitting)

• Golf Shop and course will be open from 8 am to

5 pm Sun-Thur; 8 am to 6 pm Fri & Sat.

• No play is permitted before 8:00 am. Frost may

delay posted opening time.

• Tee times can be made two weeks in advance

by calling 795-2141.

• Please check in 15 minutes prior to your sched-

uled time.

• If you must cancel a scheduled time, please help

us by calling 24 hours in advance.

• Golf cars must be returned to the shop no later

than 6:30pm

• For more information, tee times, or to just say

hello, stop by or give us a call: 795-2141

Protocol for Reciprocal Play When planning to play at other private golf fa-

cilities, here are some guidelines to get you started:

#1: Call the other golf facility first and let them

know you are a member of a private club and are

interested in reciprocating with their club.

#2: Verify that they will in fact reciprocate with

our facility, and ask what days and times are availa-

ble, whether you can bring guests, what are the

dress code requirements and what can you expect

to pay in fees.

#3: Generally at this point they will ask for a call

from your Head Golf Professional to set it up. The

staff at the SWCC golf shop will be more than hap-

py to take over from here and make that call.

#4: During the winter months, when our facility is

closed and you need a call from us to set up a re-

ciprocal round, just leave a message on our golf

shop phone (209-795-2141). We check for messages

every-other-day and will get back to you as soon as

possible.

By doing this ground-work ahead of time we can

eliminate the frustration of “phone-tag” scenarios.

There are many great private clubs out there so

take advantage of the benefits of being a member

at Sequoia Woods!

THE SEQUOIANS by Julie Latham, Captain

Our 2018 opening day for the Sequoians was on April

3rd. It was a beautiful morning for golf, with lots

of smiles and hugs as we greeted each other for the

new golf season. We all got to meet the new mem-

bers of the ‘Niners. Following golf, we enjoyed a

luncheon - with 28 in attendance - and held our

general meeting, with sweeps presentations. We

congratulated MARILYN NORD, who was the Low Net

Charm Girl.

Our attendance for the April 10th play day was low,

due to the cold conditions, and our play scheduled

for April 17th was cancelled because the fairways

were covered with snow! I love golf, but I also know

how badly we need the rain and snow, and so thank

God for it.

We did get to enjoy a wonderful tournament on April

11th, hosted by the 18 Hole Women’s Club, followed

by a delicious luncheon in the dining room. What a

great day of golf and fellowship!

In May, our tee times will change to 9:00, with check

in prior to 8:30. Our monthly meeting will be May 1st,

following golf, with a deli lunch on the deck. I think

May will be a beautiful month for golf at Sequoia

Woods.

MENS CLUB NEWS By Tom Gosswiller, Captain

For those of you who came out and braved the

Men’s Club opener on April 19th, it was hard to dis-

play your team colors while wearing two or three lay-

ers of clothes! Even though there was rain, hail and

wind, the course was in great shape and fun was had

by all. Kudos to Paul Watts and the crew for getting

the course ready for us after the snow storm and

downed trees that occurred just days before our tour-

nament. It looks like our weather has turned to spring

and I am looking forward to the warm sunshine and

the great golf ahead!

Our annual Men’s Club Clean Up Day will be on Tues-

day May 22nd. Get your rakes, gloves and other

yard tools ready. We will be cleaning the area be-

tween holes 12 and 13, along with the left side of 15

and both sides of 18. It will only be a few hours of

your time and you get to keep all the golf balls you

can find! Please come out and help, as this is the

Men’s Club’s way of showing how much we appreci-

ate our Grounds Crew and the great job they do

keeping our course in such beautiful shape. There will

be a sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board for

our Clean Up Day.

Our next Men’s Club Tournament will be on May 17th.

It will be a Low Net with Skins Tournament. Jack

Larmour has told me he will be here to check us in

and handle the payouts and scoring at the end.

Another little golf quote from the great Sam Snead,

“If a lot of people gripped a knife and fork the way

they do a golf club, they’d starve to death”.

Swing easy and enjoy your rounds of golf. If I were

trying to make my living playing golf, I’d be home-

less!!

‘See you on the course,

Women’s 18-Hole Club by Sharon Croswell, Captain

April weather made for a cold start for our golf sea-

son. Wednesday April 4th was our Kick-Off Play Day,

with 21 golfers playing nine holes, in a “two-person

best ball of foursome” format. We had a tie for first

place, so Karen Chu, Melba Thomas, Barbara

Brown, and Ginny Harrington shared the honor with

Marti Figone, Tina Campen, and Harriet Johns. After

golf, the ladies had a fabulous lunch, which was

followed by our first General Meeting. I must say, the

brownie a la mode was to die for!

On April 11th, 31 golfers braved the cloudy and cool

weather as SWWGC hosted the Sequoians for an-

other nine holes, “two best balls of the foursome”

format. First place winners were Tina Campen, Patty

Tillotson, Chris Gosswiller, and Claudia Beymer. Well

done Ladies! The club staff then served a delicious

lunch in the restaurant.

Karen Chu has been busily sending out Open Day

notices. Members still have time to sign up for the

following May events: Serrano GC on May 31st,

Lincoln Hills GC also on May 31st , and Pajaro Valley

GC on May 29th. The last day to sign up for each of

these Open Day dates is Monday May 7th.

In May the SWWGC starting time on Wednesday

play days changes to 9am, and check-in before

8:30. Please remember to check-in on time because

the pro shop needs time to print our cards. On our

play day last week (April 25) one of our members

Women’s 18-Hole Club Officers for 2018 (l to r:) Sharon Croswell, Captain; Sharon Tussy,

Board Member; Jacqueline Guttierez, Board Mem-

ber; Jane Lucas, Secretary; Kaylee Clemens, Treas-

urer; Lynn Manfree, Co-Captain.

was chatting in the parking lot and did not check in

on time. By the time she checked in with the pro

shop the cards were already printed and she was

turned away.

On a happier note, the Women will be hosting the

Men vs. Women tournament on Wednesday May

30th .

The Women’s Invitational, “Diamonds in the Rough”,

is fast-approaching and is getting filled up. The June

19th and 20th event is always sold out, so if you are

interested, get your registration form in ASAP. Just a

thought, the pro shop is selling “bling” visors for

$4.99.

Here’s to great golf weather on a BEAUTIFUL golf

course!

POLICIES FOR USING

THE MOUNTAIN RETREAT RESORT

We hope our members are enjoying the reciprocal ar-

rangement with our neighbors at The Mountain Retreat

resort. At this time we’d like to remind everyone of the

current policies. These policies are important to follow in

order to keep our arrangement intact, so please re-

spect and abide!

Our members may use only the indoor swimming pool,

the spa, sauna and workout room (all located on the

lower level) at Mountain Retreat as part of your Se-

quoia Woods membership.

There is no charge to use their facility but the use is restricted to Sequoia Woods Country Club members in

good standing. You may now bring no more than two guests with you to the facility and you must

accompany them—guest card privileges will not otherwise be honored.

Likewise, you may bring your children with you to the facility but you must accompany them, as well. Your chil-

dren are considered guests. (To everyone’s understanding, this isn’t a place to drop-off your kids to play or to

“hang-out”.)

Most importantly, you’ll need to present your permanent plastic Sequoia Woods card with your name and

number for identification, as well as a second ID. Your card is the only way you can use the facility. Once they

cross-check your card with the active member list we provide them, their staff will buzz the locked access

door open. (If you’ve lost your SWCC member card please let us know as soon as possible and we’ll send for

replacements, which you’ll be able to pick up here at the clubhouse.)

The hours of operation: 8:00am until 10:00pm summer; 8:00am until 8:00pm off-season (fall, winter & spring).
