It is recommended that golfers pre book tee-times during the summermonths and on days of major golf club competitions. Most golf clubs haveclub hire facilities and caddy services available, but again it is advisable toensure that the courses you wish to play, provide these facilities.

Useful Tips for the GolferHere are some tips to make your golfingexperience all the more enjoyable:

WEATHERIreland enjoys a temperate climate which is ideal for golfers. However, we would suggest that you carry your waterproofs and sunscreen with you as both rain and sunshine are all part of the Irish climate.

GREEN FEESMost clubs have special rates for groups, sometimes based on inclusive green fees andclub house catering arrangements. Green fee reservations can be made direct to theselected golf clubs.

CADDIES AND CADDY CARSCaddies are available at the most popular championship clubs. However, prior bookingarrangements are recommended. Caddy (pull) cars can be hired at most clubs.

MOTORISED CARTSMany courses offer motorised carts. It is recommended to enquire on availability prior to making a reservation.

DRESS CODEWhile it is advisable to check with the individual club, smart casual is the accepted uniform for golfers. Jeans and trainers are frowned upon and in some of the more traditional clubs, a jacket, collar and tie are insisted upon when using the dining room.

SOFT SPIKES AND HANDICAP CERTIFICATES Many golf clubs now have a soft spikes only policy, so do check in advance. Also handicap certificates are becoming the accepted norm, so if you have one fromyour club, bring it along.

Mahon Golf Club The Ted McCarthy Municipal Golf Course is situated just 3km from Cork City. It is set between Clover Hill and the estuary of the Douglas River and commands a delightful view of Lough Mahon and the gently sloping hills of Rochestown.

The course offers undulating fairways, numerous water hazards and extremely demanding greens. The balance of long and short holes and many tight fairways offers an excellent test of golf for all levels and guarantees enjoyable golf.

Monkstown Golf Club was founded in 1908, and extended from nine to eighteen holes in 1971.Up to 1971 the clubhouse was a castle, built in 1636 and is still standing. A new clubhouse was built on a different part of the course and extended in 1994.

The front nine offers fabulous views over Cork Harbour, together with a variety of holes to test your shotmaking ability. The back nine has some of the most difficult finishing holes where accurate shootingis called for, particularly, in the index 1 seventeenth, and the finishing hole, where many scores came to grief. There is a beautiful water feature which comes into play on four holes and the course has a number of magnificent old trees.

Overall, Monkstown is a demanding parkland course for golfers of all levels and the greens have always been noted for being amongst the best in the country.

Listowel Golf Club The opening of Listowel Golf Course in 1995 was the fulfilment of a dream for its proprietor, Michael F. Barrett, a past captain (1970-1971) and president (1990-1991) of the world-renowned Ballybunion Golf Club.

The course is dominated by a towering wood which runs like a spine through its middle. The excitingopening downhill par 4 exposes the major feature of the course, the splendid “Silver River Feale”. Three holes then run along this beautiful, but menacing river, before two run parallel to them under theshadow of the wood. This is the southern side of the course. The finishing 3 holes are on the northernside ofthe wood. It is a challenging layout intended to test the course management and shot-makingability of even the best players.
