Recently I had the pleasure of meetingLydia Koe, the world’s No. 1 femalegolfer and defending champion of theSwinging Skirts LPGA Classic. She alsoposted five other wins last season—asshe turned from 16 years old to 17. As Iwatched her outplay seasoned prosdouble her age and experience, I wasmost impressed with her manner,respect and perspective about her gameand life. Heck, she’s still in high school!Women’s golf now has a rising starwhom I hope will inspire millions of girlsand women to take up this great sportand help move it into the “must do”mode worldwide. Take the time to watchher play this year—I bet you’l l beinspired, too!

Eight-inch holes? Yes, to my surprisethe other day, a local course expandedall 18 holes to help compensate for therecent required (and evil) “punchedgreens.” So we all had loads of fun, andI was able enjoy a round where my maxputt count was two—which I’d like to bemy norm. We also played our round inless than four hours, on a beautiful andbusy Saturday morning. I’d like to seemore courses offer the 8” hole

alternative, giving golfers who rarelybreak 100 an opportunity to better enjoythemselves. Don’t get me wrong, I’m notadvocating replacing the standard golfhole, but simply giving golfers an optionof what hole size to play. It’s easyenough to have two pin positions onevery green, one standard and the otherlarger. Such an easy option—with suchbenefits!

I play a lot of golf and I’m happy toreport my game has improved. Iattribute much of it to taking golflessons and attempting to rememberthe good instruction I’ve received. It allmakes perfect sense at the time and I’musually able to execute the suggestions,but unfortunately, I have diff icultyremembering most things, most of thetime. Oh well…I’m working at that, too,and am very clear that my enjoymenthas increased dramatically just knowingI’ve remembered even a few things tomake my game better. Like most thingsin life, practice helps. I’ll continue on myquest and I hope you do, too. Happyspring!

Unlike many contemporary housingcommunities sporting names like “OakMeadows” while containing neither oaksnor meadows, the Chardonnay Golf Clubsprawls over a good portion of its 325 acreswith...yes, chardonnay grapes! (And a bit ofmerlot and syrah for good measure.) This istruly and singularly "Golf in the Vineyards"as you can find it nowhere else, bothbecause those vineyards are located in theuniversally acclaimed wine region of NapaValley, and because you literally are amongthe vineyards on virtually every hole. Aboutthe only direction you won’t be shadowedby stately chardonnay vines is in thesprawling skies above you.And it means one more thing: countless

vines and grapes but ZERO housesanywhere on the course.Chardonnay Club is located on the

outskirts of Napa proper in JamesonCanyon, with an American Canyon address.It’s nestled between Highway 29, whichbisects Napa’s ubiquitous vineyards, andHighway 80, the major east-west arteryconnecting San Francisco to Sacramentoand Tahoe. This means plentiful marineinfluence from San Francisco Bay, which isnot far at all as the crow flies, and definitely

a factor in the ever changingconditions that characterize somuch Bay Area golf.Do you like your late fall and

winter days on the relativelywarmer side? Summer earlymornings under light blankets offog that crept in sometime sincethe previous late afternoon? Allof it buffeted by cooling,recurrent coastal breezes? You’llfind all that and more at the

Chardonnay Club, where the golf can be a365-day-a-year proposition but every one ofthose days exhibits the unique character ofboth the course and its geography.The course started life as an 18-hole

layout in 1986 and flexed to 36 and then 27in subsequent years before settling back to

its 18-hole standard again in May 2010.General Manager Roger Billings, now on hissecond tour heading up the operation thatbegan for him in 1991 for a five-year stintand then resumed in 2006, enjoyed theflexibility of the 27-hole layout that gave oneof the three nines a rest on given days, but

sheer economics made that formatdifficult to sustain as the golf industrycontracted again after the boom yearsof the ‘90s and early ‘00s.Billings, working with his golf course

superintendent at the time, GaryCozart, and the rest of theChardonnay staff worked diligently inreconfiguring and refurbishing thecourse to its best advantage. “Wewanted to maintain the holes thatprovided the biggest bang in terms ofviews and playability,” says Billings.“Then we got onto improvementprojects that have continued to this


day. There’s no day anymore when a golfcourse isn’t working on something or otherto enhance play.”Currently high on the improvement list are

bunker additions, mounding and irrigationprojects. Notable about the latter is thatChardonnay Golf Club maintains contracts

with the Napa Sanitation District to irrigatewith reclaimed wastewater, making thecourse as figuratively and literally green aspossible in these drought-affected times.For all its dazzling vineyard theme, the

Chardonnay Golf Club also sports a raresymmetry in perfectly dividing its 18-hole,6,942 yard, par-72 layout into an even halfdozen par-3s, 4s and 5s.Further symmetry: five par 5s allrun over 500 yards, topping outat the 582-yard No. 7 hole. Thisis a doozie that plays into aprevailing wind and requiressome serious decision-makingas you contemplate driving yourball over Fagan Creek and a canyon that willget you to the green. The creek criss-crosses the course on multiple holes,adding some welcome complexity to thisclassic Chardonnay.That’s followed by No. 8, which could

hardly be more different even if it were insome obscure region of the other 49 statesthat produce wine in this country. (GolfGuide’s official stance: Stay with California!)

This 198-yard par-3 plays invitingly shortand downhill, but that’s hardly synonymouswith “easy.” Our colleagues at Golf Digestcalled it “one of the most fun holes inAmerica,” its banana-shaped, shallow-but-90-yards-wide, five-tiered green among thechief reasons. Let the pin placement here

determine your tee shot and help you avoidthe bunkers and hazard that make this holesuch a delightful challenge.

No. 14 perhaps takes bragging rights asthe most “vineyardy” of this course so notedfor its vineyards. Looking just 183 yardsdown to the pin from an elevated tee, youbehold a huge swath of the luscious Napa

Valley, to an island green totallysurrounded by vines. If thatdoesn’t put you in a sippingmood once you reach the 19thhole, then wine may not be foryou. But there’s no reason thegolf shouldn’t be.

Costs are in the moderaterange, topping out at $89 peak-season,peak-time and drifting down to as low as$39, depending on your age, time of dayand season. You can easily spend as muchon a bottle of Napa’s finest, which is nosmall pleasure indeed. Matter of fact, thatwould pair rather nicely, by anyone’smeasure, with the finest vineyard golf on theplanet—just one more symmetry to enjoy onthis rare vintage of a course.

Since 1970, residents and visitors have been fortunate to enjoy golf in the most beautiful part of a beautiful city atBennett Valley Golf Course in Santa Rosa. This tree-lined municipal course just minutes from downtown issurrounded by mountains that are carpeted with oaks, redwoods, and Monterey pines. Matanzas Creek meandersthrough four holes, and with no houses lining the course, it's just you and your game, which is aided mightily bywonderful course conditions. Mill Valley is one of those tucked away, tree-enshrouded towns, population 14,000, for which the word “bucolic”seems to have been coined. So it is little wonder that its municipal golf course is a largely unknown jewel, it beingfurther tucked away—like one of the Chinese boxes-within-boxes that so delight children at holiday time—underlush canopies of coastal redwoods and the soft inviting hills of Marin County. The irony is you can get there withinminutes off Highway 101, just nine miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The challenging 9-hole, par-33 layouthas six par-4s and the rest par-3. It also contains its own ingenious “short course” (par 27), for those still buildingtheir game. Built in 1919, the course was upgraded several years ago with revamped greens, a small practicefacility, putting green and snack bar. Club rentals are available, and its “2 for 20” slogan (two hours to play, under20 bucks) should leave you time and cash aplenty to enjoy the countless other pleasures of this NorCal paradise.

An enterprising chap by the nameof Michael Jordan may be takinghis own swing at the problem ofslow play. The former NBA great isreportedly so fed up with the snail’space at the Bear’s Club in Jupiter,Florida, where he is a member withPGA pros Rory McIlroy and KeeganBradley, that he is considering anoption he has on a property nearthe club.

Jordan had Greg Norman out to take a tour of the property. If it winds up coming tofruition as a golf course, Jordan will be able to host a very small cadre of sports comradeswho share his passion for fast play.

The name “AeroBurner” derives from the product ’sadvanced aerodynamics, a performance variable theTaylorMade R&D members have long obsessed over in theirquest to engineer fast driver heads. A Few Words About the “Yips”

According to Wikipedia, the term “yips” is said to have been popularized by TommyArmour (the Elder), a champion golfer and teacher, to explain the difficulties that led him toabandon tournament play. Golfers have used words such as “twitches, staggers, jitters andjerks” to describe the yips, which affects some 33-48 percent of all serious golfers, accordingto Mayo Clinic researchers. Those who have played for more than 25 years appear to be themost prone to the condition.

Researchers point to biochemical changes in the brain as one possible culprit, “focaldystonia” (a neurological condition affecting certain muscle groups) as another.

Professional golfers are not immune, either. Bernhard Langer, Ben Hogan, Harry Vardon,Sam Snead were among those affected, and even newcomer, Keegan Bradley, who missed asimple 6-inch putt in the final round of the 2013 HP Byron Nelson Championship, may havebeen suffering from the condition.

Golfer and commentator Nick Faldo recently suggested that Tiger Woods may be sufferingfrom the yips as well.

Interventions for treating the yips have proven less than fruitful. Changing putters, gripsand hand placements on the grip, stances, ball positions at address—all have been tried,and the benefits proven to be temporary at best.

My own humble suggestion is to go back to what you did when you were making puttsand leave the rest up to scientific experiments. Have fun, play well and enjoy the experiencethat you are in at the time. And don’t forget to take in the beauty of your surroundings,wherever you are playing.

Aficionados of traditional golf (at traditional prices) will find a highly agreeable experience awaiting them atSkywest Golf Course in Hayward. This challenging-but-always-pleasing course in the lovely and tranquil Capay Valley was established in January2008 both to enhance the vacation getaway atmosphere for Cache Creek Casino Resort visitors and to provide aunique venue on its very own terms for golf-only enthusiasts drawn up the hill from Sacramento, Wine Country,and the Bay Area. Brad Bell filled the 7,334 yards of oak-studded hills and tall grasses (four other tee placementswork down to 5,426 yards) with plentiful bunkers and a picturesque 19-acre irrigation lake that provides plot twistson three holes. Windsor's 1989 debut helped transform itsnamesake Sonoma County town from a sleepy rural hamlet into a classy destination that includes an inviting newdowntown area built from scratch. An extensive fairway sanding program has now made it a 12-month course, allthe better to accommodate the 12-month wine tasting that golfers can pursue almost immediately outside thecourse boundaries. Although holes 2 and 7 were both consistently ranked among the “Top 10 Most Difficult” on theNike Tour, the 6,650-yard layout is relatively forgiving. With Charlie's restaurant offering a sophisticated menu andbeautiful views from the lakeside patio accompanied by a club that continues to set the standard in Bay Area golf.
