The inaugural Anne Marie Kohlhepp Memorial Golf Tournament was held on Friday, May 4, 2018 at the Locust Hill Golf Course, located in Charles Town, WV. American Public University Systems(APUS) was the primary coordinator of the event. All proceeds raised by the tournament were donated to the Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County (AWS). Tournament day weather was fabulous as cloud cover kept the temperatures comfortable for the majority of the day. The golfers began their day well-fed as an assortment of breakfast items were available for all participants with breakfast sandwiches donated by Chick-Fil-A in Ranson. Volunteers from both APUS and AWS were on site in support of the event, which saw a total of 94 golfers participating in the tournament. Throughout the day, in addition to golfing, attendees were able to participate in several fun-filled activities. A number of wonderful gift items were raffled off and one lucky golfer, Craig Kershner, had the winning 50/50 ticket and graciously donated his half of the winnings back to AWS. To wrap up the day, lunch was provided by Ortega’s Taco Shop. Through registration fees, general sponsorships, tee sign sponsors (signs provided by Vital Signs), raffles and donations, the event raised over $11,700 for AWS. Since the event was such a resounding success, rumors are that the golf tournament may become an annual event. AWS HELPS SENIORS AND VETERANS TO ADOPT Did you know that AWS has discounts for senior adopters, senior pets and veterans? The AWS Discount Program gives a 50% discount on adoption fees for dogs and cats that are being adopted by senior citizens (over 60 years old), senior dogs or cats (over 7 years old) and military veterans. With regular adoption fees at

$120 for dogs and $80 for cats, the discounted fees are $60 for dogs and $40 for cats. All fees include the spay/neuter of pet, all vaccinations, microchip, and all health testing.

Pets improve the lives of everyone, especially seniors and veterans. Older pets can be a perfect match for many seniors because of their need for less exercise, with many having calmer behaviors. Many of these senior pets have been relinquished because of owners moving or elderly

owners passing away. These displaced pets don’t understand why, all of a sudden, they are in a cage and not on a couch. They will be forever grateful to find a loving home. Visit our shelter, website www.awsjc.org or Facebook to view the pets that need homes.

February 10th was a very romantic and exciting evening for the 230 supporters attending the dinner and live and silent auctions. The Skyline Ballroom was magically transformed with lovely decorations and the auction tables were filled with spectacular items donated by businesses from the surrounding area. The live auction contained many wonderful and unique items, some one of a kind from local artisans. Even Disney World got in on the act with park tickets for four.

Thanks to each and everyone who supported this event, allowing us to raise $29,000 to help provide our cats and dogs with continued quality care.

Funds from the Valentine’s Dinner and Auction were allocated to putting the finishing touches on the dog kennels with the painting of the outside dog kennel areas using the same epoxy paint that was used for the interior walls. This will be done in time for the installation of new interior and exterior kennel doors, designed to help maintain a more consistent temperature inside and to help prevent loss of warm or cool air because of improved insulation and weather.

THANK YOU TO THE FOLLOWING SPONSORS WHO HELPED TO MAKE THIS EVENING A SUCCESS THROUGH THEIR FINANCIAL GIFTS:

LOOK WHO IS HELPING AWS!

KARIN FELLERS RAISES FUNDS FOR AWS Karin has been making puppets, magnets, pins, etc. since 2014 and has raised an estimated $3570 based on selling approximately 370 units. It takes about 30 minutes to make one unit which equals to approximately 190 plus hours during the

last four years. Karin’s friends have donated yarn for her creations, which are sold at Dickinson and Wait Craft Gallery in Shepherdstown. The staff at the shop say that people see the puppets, learn that they are for the AWS animals and are more likely to put money in the donation jar, even if they don’t buy a puppet. In addition, they often don’t look for change from a $10 or $20 dollar bill when they buy one puppet for $7 or two for $12, which also adds to the lucrative donation jar. Many thanks to Karin!!!

CHARLES TOWN ROTARY LENDS A HAND

This spring members of the Charles Town Rotary came to the shelter to lend a hand with any chore that needed to be done at the shelter.

PARKERSBURG AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION-RUTH HORNBROOK MEMORIAL GRANT

AWS has again been award a grant from this Foundation. The grant will be used to partially finance the rebuilding of the ramp that leads to the front door. The ramp has deteriorated over time and will be replaced with non-slip Trex decking. The wooden railings and posts will be replaced with white vinyl railings and posts. The $1,400 grant will fund more than half the cost of the posts and railings. This grant will improve accessibility to our shelter facility, allowing all to enter safely to visit with our cats and dogs.

HARPERS FERRY TAILS PETSITTING MAKING A CHANGE

WITH EXTRA’S CHANGE Last summer, Suzi Kitchen’s cat, “Extra,” started a fundraiser for pets called, “Extra’s Change.” His idea is simple: just collect your change in a jug every night and forget about it until 12/31. You wind up with a pain-free donation to help save animals who desperately need your help. “Extra” is now the Director of Community Outreach at Harpers Ferry Tails Pet Sitting, his owner’s business.

Here is how to do it:1. Go to www.harpersferrytails.com and sign up so participants can be tracked. 2. Grab a jug/bottle/old sock and add your change everyday. At the end of the year, take your change to the bank and cash it in. 3. In January, Suzi will mail out envelopes pre-addressed to the Animal Welfare Society, will write out a check in the amount of your change collected and will put it in the mail. Easy!!!

Here is CTMS principal Paul Brown and assistant principal Chris Coughlin presenting a check to Bill from a yearlong

fundraiser the staff did!!

CHARLES TOWN/RANSON CHRISTMAS PARADE

SHEPHERD UNIVERSITY HEALTH FAIR AND KITTY YOGA

Shepherd University Wellness Center hosted a Health Fair in February. Animal Welfare board members and volunteers set up a table to promote animal awareness and brought an adoptable dog. The Wellness Center also hosted another year of Yoga with Kittens. AWS shelter cats roamed the room while participants exercised.

RECORD RABIES CLINIC March 17th was one of the busiest annual rabies clinics in quite a while. 179 dogs and cats were vaccinated by Dr. Alice Sudduth, DVM, in two hours!!! Lines wove around the aisles at Southern States in Ranson. Thanks to Dr. Sudduth and all the urgently needed volunteers. AWS sponsors two rabies clinics each year in September and March.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?

Board members, volunteers and dogs enjoyed a crisp walk.

Randy Hilton joined the parade with his 1952 MG with volunteer, Tom Cain and Randy’s dog, Bella.

Board member, Robert House, poses with Chewbacca and our shelter dog, Happy, at Health Fair.

AWS ANNUAL FLOWER SALES

This year’s two-day annual Easter Flower Sale and Mother’s Day Sales moved to a new location- Town Run Tap House and Community Pub in Shepherdstown. After years of facing inclement weather at the Domino’s in Shepherdstown, AWS moved to the new location so buyers, volunteers, flowers and merchandise could stay dry under the overhang outside or inside the pub, if necessary. The Easter sale was a success despite the 50 mph wind gusts in March!!

“BARK IN THE PARK” RESCHEDULED BECAUSE OF WEATHER

By the time you read this, hopefully the 12th Annual Bark in the Park fundraising event at Jefferson Memorial Park in Charles Town was deemed a success. The June 2nd event was canceled due to all forecasts predicting 95% to 100% rain and severe thunderstorms for the safety of everyone. Did it rain, was there a thunderstorm? Nooooo! As a matter of fact, by the end of the day, the sun came out. Needless to say, it was very frustrating for the committee. But not to give up, the event was rescheduled for June 30th. Hopefully, the weather cooperated and everyone was able to participate in the Blessing of the Animals by Rev. Michael Morgan of Zion Episcopal Church, the Interactive Dog Pledge Walk, canine

demonstrations, dog and owner games, canine contests and visited the various vendors. Food was to be provided by Alfredo’s Mediterranean Grille and Steakhouse and Shack Dog hot dog wagon. We hope everyone was able to have fun and we dodged the rain drops.

HAPPY TAILS

All animal shelters greatly benefit from the Foster Program. When cats or dogs, young and older, are placed in a home setting, they are given the benefit of a home environment where they can freely roam indoors, develop socialization skills because of more one-on-one contact, and get used to being handled more. Pat Wiese of the Omaha Nebraska Humane Society put it well when she said, “The animals learn that people are fun---something many don’t know before being fostered. Scared animals can calm down in a more serene place and begin to feel comfortable.”Moving animals offsite also frees up kennels for others to come in—so fostering helps to expand our space. With kitten season here, so many shelters struggle with space issues to accommodate as many cats as the shelter can comfortably house without overcrowding.Have room and time to care for a dog or cat? AWSJC provides their food (cat litter for the cats) and any medical bills they may incur in your care. Please consider opening your home and your heart to one of our residents. It’s a rewarding and calming experience—and you’re making a difference in an animal’s life!
