FOR ACTIVITY YEAR 2014 IN THIS ISSUE

We often take the ‘small town life’ for granted. And, so many times, we take the routine things in life for granted. In life, as

noted amateur golfer Bobby Jones said, ‘you get good breaks and bad breaks, but you have to play the ball where it lies.’ And when you get some bad breaks, playing your ball in a small town can be a huge comfort.

When Scott Simonitch set out to play in last year’s Oak Tree Classic, he was expecting, the usual—a fun day on a beautiful golf course with good friends, playing for a cause he believed in. His shot on hole 6 was far from routine, though. With that shot, Scott became the first golfer to hit a Hole In One in the Oak Tree’s history.

He and his teammates, Gene Hausauer and Gregg Lindahl had been playing well, and even though he has a draw, Scott felt pretty good about how he hit the ball. Bill Thyne, whose team was paired up with Scott’s saw the ball go in the hole and volunteer witness Mel Reinke verified it.

“It was a pretty shot,” Scott says. And it was worth a $10,000 cash prize. It was a moment he won’t forget.

The past two years have been full of unforgettable moments for Scott and his wife Monica. In 2013, Scott was diagnosed with bladder cancer for which he still receives treatment. While still reconciling himself to the cancer diagnosis he was faced with another medical crisis.

One day in July of that same year he came to OAHS for a stress test. Later that evening, he had some troubling symptoms: cold, clammy skin, a headache and shortness of breath. After debating for a while, he decided he needed to go to the ER. He’s very lucky that he did. (con’t. page 2)

(con’t. from page 1) While in the ER, he and the hospital staff held a teleconference with a cardiologist in Sioux Falls. Scott was immediately transferred and had an arteriogram which revealed he had five blockages in his heart. He then underwent open heart surgery and two days later had a stroke.

As part of his recovery regimen, he was put on blood thinners, which meant he needed to have his blood tested regularly. One Tuesday afternoon shortly after coming home, Scott was registering at the front desk in the clinic when he suddenly collapsed. He was immediately taken to the ER and, luckily, his cardiologist was on the premises in Outreach that day. This time Scott was air-lifted to Sioux Falls and things looked very grim.

As luck would have it again, though, an operating room was available, which is rare since they are usually booked with surgeries on Tuesdays.

Recovery was overwhelming and emotional. Scott had received hundreds of cards, well-wishes and gifts

throughout his ordeal and he was determined to respond to each one personally. And for a long time, he couldn’t talk to other people about what he had been through. Life had changed drastically for him and his family in a matter of moments.

It’s been said that ‘people in small towns, much more than in cities, share a destiny.’ Scott’s story reflects that. And, just like shooting a hole in one, he was lucky that things lined up perfectly. He had good people here, whom he knew, to take care of him and get him to where he needed to be. And even while in Sioux Falls, he still felt connected to home, since two of his nurses, Danielle (Beyer) Karels and John Karn were from the Ortonville area.

Today, as he looks back on it, all he smiles, “Everything just worked out.”

Listening to Scott Simonitch tell his story brought tears to my eyes more than once and also reinforced my pride of and belief in the Big Stone Health Care Foundation. He named everyone who was in the Emergency Room with him as he was being prepped for transfer. Many of those medical professionals are involved with the Foundation either as recipients. The Foundation helped purchase some

of the medical equipment that was used to save his life. The Foundation—and its donors (yes, you!) played direct financial roles in building the Outreach Center and our state-of-the art hospital. Scott’s story is a perfect of example of how the gifts you give to the Foundation have a direct impact on the people in our community. While we may make jokes about being from a small town, in this instance—as it is in many that we don’t

hear about—being in this small town where we are always willing to show how much we care by giving, it’s a pretty good place to be. Thanks to you. If you would like to see how the Foundation has made a difference in

more lives, go to our website www.bshcf.org or our Facebook page and watch our latest video testimonial.

Synergy…it’s what we do. Sally Rakow—Executive Director

A record number—271—guests attended the recent Big Stone Health Care Foundation’s 21st Annual Gala Affair. Just over $11,000 was raised through donations and sponsorships which will help the Big Stone Health Care Foundation fulfill its mission to maintain and expand area health care.

Following a Social Hour which included a variety of wines and cheeses sponsored by Beyond Concrete, GCC Ready Mix, Hartman’s SuperValu and Valley Queen Cheese, Master of Ceremonies John Rogers of OAHS welcomed the many donors and friends of the Foundation who were in attendance. Foundation Executive Director Sally Rakow presented a videotaped segment which featured Penny Hormann, Dr. Susan Anderson, Lindsey Lee and Diane Kvidera and how the Foundation has played a role in their health and careers. Board President Dr. Robert Ross also spoke during the short program before dinner. Special tribute was paid to Donald Stolpman of Ortonville who recently worked with the Foundation to create a significantly endowed Donald J. Stolpman Scholarship Fund.

The Red Hot Gala featured a raffle for the first time and Kelly Rademacher of Ortonville was the lucky winner of the $2,500 “Choose Your Own Vacation” prize.

THE LEGACY BIG STONE HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION | Issue 2 6

To secure and expend financial aid for the operations, maintenance and expansion of the health care facilities and service of Ortonville Area Health Services, a not-for-profit corporation, and to otherwise contribute to the health care and maintenance of the people of the Ortonville area.

Like everything else in life, our healthcare needs, our healthcare facilities and the needs of our health care providers change. The Big Stone Health Care Foundation is proud to work with you to fulfill our mission.

"Power is the ability to do good things for others."

–Brooke Astor

Because of your giving, we have been able to complete some life-changing projects:

•$2.2 million “Building a Healthy Future” Capital Campaign •Kidney Dialysis Unit •Outreach Center •Physician Recruitment •Community Fitness •CT Scan and other equipment needs

The Foundation also offers funding assistance to students who may be just preparing for a career in health care or furthering their medical education. We also fund the training for those desiring to become EMTs or CNAs. The Foundation’s Educational Loans are granted with the expectation that recipients will remain or return to OAHS, which further enriches our health care system. Find out more about the Foundation at www.bshcf.org.
