Defining “Citizenship”
• The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines “Citizenship” as:1. The status of being a citizen
2. (being in a community)a. Membership in a community (as a college)
b. The quality of an individual’s response to membership in a community

Our Experience: Good Design isGood Citizenship

responsibilities – Establish and maintain conduct standards
• Examples from SPSU– Physical Design- Teaching architecture– Psychological Design- Principles of learning– Governance Design- Building community
Psychological Design
Good Design
• Provide guidance in what is to be learned, e.g., course outcomes
• Provide feedback along the way, e.g., knowledge of results
Good Citizenship
• Articulate codes of conduct, e.g., citation of references
• Assess behavior with respect to those codes, e.g., use of appropriate reference citations

Recommendations
• Define “good citizenship” and “good design” as appropriate on your campus
• Identify opportunities or “teachable moments” to bridge between good design and good citizenship
• Build the links and connections to exploit those opportunities and synergistically enhance both design and citizenship
