2Keep it simpleIf space is restricted, consider using a dressing table as a desk. Often smaller in scale, a dressing table can fit into the tiniest alcove. Look out for tables with drawers, plus a footstool for occasional use is a space-saving alternative to a chair.Dalston dressing table and stool, 219; both Kenneth Cole New York Home at House of Fraser, 020 7003 4000, houseoffraser.co.uk.

    Design briefIve always liked the

idea of barn conversions so when I came to

renovate the house, I was keen to create an open, lofty feel with exposed beams, lots of light and soft, muted

    colours.

Keri Gardners home in Gloucestershire, which she shares with her three young boys, is a lesson in how to blend the old with the new. Constructed some 200 years ago from local stone, the modest former rectory is every inch the rural dream: gabled, stone-mullioned windows; gently weathered clay roof tiles; and elegant chimney stacks that reach upwards to the sky. Its what initially drew me to the house, says Keri. I loved the period style and the original features.

Yet, despite its antiquated origins, the property is no relic. After

months of painstaking work overseen by Keri, who has a keen eye for design the house has been transformed into an enviable contemporary space where dramatic, decorative flourishes abound. Bold, statement

wallpaper is a defining feature throughout the

house, cleverly employed as a means of introducing colour

and pattern. In the vast, open-

plan living area there are numerous chic touches oversized lamps and elegant barstools in leather and walnut share space with a beautifully aged console table and a cowhide rug, the latter bought from the roadside in Chamonix. And the extension itself a light-filled, timber-clad space with bi-fold doors opening on to landscaped gardens has been designed to ensure that the living space is bright throughout the day.

tIMe WeLL SpeNtThe Gardners lived in the property for four years before deciding to embark on the renovation. The house was in a good state when I moved in, just not to my taste, so I had the luxury of taking my time. Its a very valuable lesson: if youre in too much of a hurry, there will inevitably be regrets, she says. As a result, Keri was able to understand

the rhythms of the house: to see where light falls at particular times of the day and the best angle from which to enjoy the sunset. By the time I sat down with an architect, I had a very clear idea of what I wanted to achieve, she says. Id taken time to research precisely which beams to use in the living area and exactly where to position the fireplace

  • goodhomes.net

When I came to style the house, I pretty much had a blank canvas

INTERIOR INSPIRATIONMy dream home is something akin to a boutique hotel all crisp white sheets, bathrooms with clean lines and dramatic wallpaper. The master bedroom, with its velvet upholstered bedstead, always makes me feel like Im on a fabulous holiday. There are lots of low, sloping ceilings in the upstairs rooms, which meant I wasnt able to hang pictures behind headboards. Instead, I have used wallpaper as it helps to give depth and personality to a room.

and the soft seating area. Now I can sit and enjoy views in three directions: of the church, the gardens and cows that graze in the fields, she adds.

DREAM KITCHENWhile the existing kitchen was serviceable and attractive, Keri felt that it wasnt in-keeping with the contemporary extension. The old scheme had cream-painted Shaker units and wooden worktops but as soon as I decided to knock through to create our new open-plan living space, I knew Id have to update it. It would have been an almost Alice in Wonderland experience walking from a small cottagey kitchen into this lofty, modern space, she says.Keri was keen to create a seamless

transition between the original house and the extension, opting for sleek, flat-fronted contemporary units and keeping handles on drawers and cupboards to a minimum. The units themselves are a muted grey: 60% gloss and 40% matt. They have a lovely sheen; I wanted to avoid high gloss, which shows every finger mark and tends

LEFT Keri has used accessories, such as the handcrafted green vase on the window sill, to add depth to her understated colour scheme throughout the house.

BELOW The main bedroom is a luxurious, inviting space. The upholstered bed is from The Big Bed Company (0845 287 2376, thebigbed company.co.uk). The embroidered cushions are from an interiors boutique in Tetbury, for similar try Parna (01865 522272, parna.co.uk).

RIGHT When I designed the house, I was keen to ensure that this guest bedroom, up in the eaves, had plenty of light. The glazed panels work really well, says Keri. The chair is from Sofa Workshop (0844 249 9161, sofaworkshop.com).

to be a nightmare when youre living with little people, Keri laughs. The kitchen is very much a family room

and the palette has been softened with a variety of stylish touches: walnut worktops and open shelving; glass splashbacks in a delicate duck-egg shade; and a composite white quartz work surface, with subtle blue flecks. I find the quartz a much more practical option than black granite, which can get quite watermarked and I like the way it helps to reflect light around the room. I also installed wooden flooring as I find it so much more calming and quieter than tiles, Keri adds. I cant stand the sound of chairs being dragged across stone floors its horrible!Keris love of feature walls is clearly

evident in this part of the house, in the form of Cole & Sons Cow Parsley wallpaper a nod to the propertys

    PROPERTY | COTSWOLDS HOUSE

Its great to live somewhere that

suits us right down to the ground

beneath a window but, in this particular property, it was completely impractical. For a few hours each afternoon, the sunlight would be blinding. When I reconfigured this area, I shifted the sink along a metre or so: it makes tasks like washing up just that bit easier. Keri also opted for sensor-controlled

lighting and taps, which are energy efficient and conducive to relaxed family life. Children are notoriously bad at switching things off and, without the sensors, Id be forever following the boys around or dealing with flooded bathrooms, she laughs. Its one of those boring details, but something that works really well in real life. Its great to live somewhere that suits us right down to the ground even down to the location of the kitchen sink! KERIS STYLE ADVICEI always think guest spaces should be versatile the twin beds work well when people come to stay or my children have their friends over. The understated palette of blues and greys is gender-neutral and helps to create a relaxed atmosphere. I like to mix styles too, and have paired country-style gingham pillowcases and wicker baskets with more contemporary, upholsteredbed headboards.

W hen you visit Katherine and Keval Shahs home, theres a feeling of being right in the middle of the countryside. Standing in the entrance hall and looking through to the kitchen, you cant help but notice the fabulous views: open fields and billowing clouds, grazing cattle and cotswold stone walls. The location is undoubtedly what

attracted us to the house in the first place, says Katherine, of the property she and her husband share with their two children, dylan, four, and carys, three. We lived in London after we were married, but I always knew Id want to return to my hometown of Malmesbury, in Wiltshire. By the time we started to think about having kids, wed decided that we wanted to live somewhere theyd be able to run free, climb trees and enjoy wide-open skies.

reNoVAtIoN proJeCtWhen the couple first set eyes upon the property, it was a dated 1950s house built of dull, grey stone a far cry from the home it is today. It was so non-descript that Katherine, who grew up close by, had never even noticed it before. The place had been well-loved

by an elderly couple, but hadnt been touched for about 50 years, she explains. There was no central heating and there was peeling, flowery wallpaper at every turn. At the rear of the property, there was an outside toilet, a coal shed and a lean-to conservatory clinging precariously to one of the external walls. By the time we viewed it, the house had been on the market for some time. I think the scale of the work required just put people off.Soon after taking possession of the

house, the couple submitted plans to enlarge the footprint of the building, creating a large master suite and double garage. The sitting and dining rooms were completely overhauled and now boast limestone fireplaces (which were handcrafted by a local stonemason) and original floorboards. The dark, narrow galley kitchen was extended and transformed into a light and airy kitchen/breakfast room with doors leading out on to a secluded patio and landscaped garden. Our architect understood from the off what we wanted to create and

DESIGN DECISIONSWhile the house was structurally sound, it needed a lot of work. We needed to budget for central heating, new electrics and plumbing and replastering throughout. Every room needed a complete overhaul. Consequently, a large proportion of our budget went on things that are essentially unseen. Given the money we spent, it would have been easy to skimp on aesthetics, but we chose to give the house the attention it deserves selecting high-quality materials like travertine, wood and limestone and having things custom made.

completely understood my vision of a kitchen where I could cook while children busied themselves with their crayons and colouring books, she continues. This is undoubtedly my favourite room: I love the combination of the country-style Shaker cabinets, butchers block worktop and travertine tiles and the views from the kitchen window mean that washing up is rarely a chore! The kitchen is where well gather for

meals and, when friends visit, well often end up clustered around the kitchen table, chatting as we share a bottle of wine. Its such a cliche, but this is very much the heart of the house, she adds.

NATURAL LIGHTKatherine and Keval were keen to take advantage of the propertys south-facing aspect something the original 1950s architect had overlooked. The house is

ideally positioned and has great views from the rear. But when we bought it there were only two windows on the southern side, neither of them larger than 60cm squared, Katherine says. Out came the tiny metal-framed panes and the external walls were remodelled so that large patio doors could span the full width of both the sitting room and kitchen/breakfast room. A window was also installed in one of the bedrooms to take advantage of the sunlight and expansive views over open fields. An abundance of light is one of the

defining features of the house, which, even in winter, feels bright and airy. The sun just streams into the back of the house and drenches these once dingy rooms in a wonderful natural glow, Katherine says. Large expanses of glass also allow the house to connect with the countryside beyond. I always look

What was your inspiration for the interior?Im intrigued by the idea of things that have a history a story to tell and combining them with newer, high-street finds. When we first moved in, we spent many Saturdays scouring auction houses and would come back laden with chairs, bookcases and blanket boxes.

How did you decide on a scheme for the decor? We wanted to emphasise the propertys bright, sunny feel so we chose a white backdrop. It works really well and bounces light around the rooms. The neutral backdrop has also enabled us to make some bold design choices.

tHrIfty CHICWhen it came to furnishing the house, Katherine and Keval scoured antiques markets and local auction houses for pieces that would add an individual touch. The chapel chairs in the kitchen were rescued from a village church just a few miles down the road and the blanket boxes, wardrobes and chests of drawers in the bedrooms are also vintage finds. a wingback chair, reupholstered in quirky patchwork, takes pride of place in the dining room, along with a beloved vintage Singer sewing machine Katherine inherited from her mother.

Im also a bit of an eBay addict, Katherine laughs. I picked up the farmhouse table in the kitchen for only 26 because there was a burn mark on the top. Keval sanded it back so the wood now has that wonderful look of Swedish bleached pine, and I painted the legs in a nice, warm off-white. There really isnt much that cant be transformed with a couple of coats of Farrow & Ball! The house testifies to the couples love

of art. an early painting by cornish artist Melanie Mcdonald, bought for a snip at a local auction, hangs in the dining room; and a series of lithographs from an oxford saleroom are dotted around the house. We hung some of the pictures in the childrens rooms and have also used PVc-free wall stickers for additional interest, Katherine says. They have been keen, too, to support West country artists and recently bought a series of screen prints bold, colourful images of famous landmarks by Bath-based artist Kirstie Jackson. I love the way they add a shot of colour to an otherwise white wall, she says.

FINAL WorDToday the property all gleaming render, contemporary white interior and exposed floorboards is unrecognisable from its former guise. Were delighted with how the house looks and it works perfectly for a family, says Katherine. GH

What attracted you to the property? The sloped woodland setting with stunning views over the trees and towards the city. We also love the unusual split-level layout designed to maximise the light and panorama.

What was your inspiration? As I am an artist and designer, I wanted to create a home that reflects the themes of my work and the way our family lives. I often use bird and leaf images in my work and this lovely setting is totally inspirational. We wanted to keep the light and airy feel of the house,

but love colour so we used strong colours on doors and feature walls. As the house is set in woodland, we wanted to reflect its environment but also keep the contemporary urban feel of city life, as we are only a few miles away from central London.

Why did you decide to move to South London? We lived in a Victorian house nearby and knew of these houses. When we viewed the house we were so bowled over by the potential, we decided immediately it was the one for us. We love this area Crystal Palace, East Dulwich and Forest
