I draw things from my past (and sometimes present); places and animals, people and I am included. I’m interested in how we connect with the past, and how the memory of it keeps us sane or insane.

My work is a visual map of the things which occupy me. - Q&A - How did you find the process of filling a sketchbook in 30 days? Difficult. And not because I don’t find drawing to be an obsession, it comes down to a sheer time factor, and also, a day job that sucks the life out of you!

Where did you get your inspiration from for the designs? To put it simply “art is cheaper than therapy”. For the first time in my artistic life I feel like I am able to express my emotions via my drawings, and feel comfortable with that.

Did you struggle to fill the book? I didn’t struggle to fill the pages I did. I probably felt more guilt over the non-prolific nature of my approach, like perhaps I should be an idea machine. I accept that I am not, though.

Do you think its important for artists to keep a sketchbook? Without a doubt. I believe that we need to create as much as possible, even if we think our ideas aren’t very good. You make work through making work. Know what I mean? www.ashleemaegan.com [email protected]
