NAPLAN READINESS TRIALNext week our school will be trialling the new NAPLAN online testing format that will become mainstream nationwide next year. The purpose of this trial is to ensure that the new format is successful and schools are able to deliver the test in a managable manner. We are one of a number of schools undertaking this trial and we look forward to our students having the opportunity to have advance experience with the new structure.
MAJOR WORKSOver the last few weeks our Year 12 students have put the finishing touches on their major works and locked them away ahead of the deadline. The major work component of any HSC course is a large commitment by the student that requires planning, dedication and application from the start of the HSC Course. I would encourage all of our Year 11 students to begin planning their ideas for their major works now - in just four more weeks they will have completed their preliminary courses and will begin their HSC studies.
Martin as our 2018 Kindergarten teacher. Mrs Martin will be coordinating the transition program this year and has planned a range of activities for our new enrolments.
NEW NSW PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ FINANCE SYSTEMMerriwa Central School will transition to the new NSW Public Schools’ finance system and a new bank account on October 16.
To ensure a smooth transition, there will be changes to the way we accept payments from parents and carers.
1. Direct deposits: As of September 22, we will no longer accept direct deposits into our current school bank account as we prepare to close this account and transition to the new one. Any payments made using direct deposit after this date cannot be properly allocated to a student’s account in a timely manner. Please ensure you have made any outstanding direct deposits before September 22
2. Cash and cheque payments: Between October 11 and October16, we will also not be able to accept payments by cash or cheque as we prepare to close our current bank account and transition to the new one. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding cash or cheque payments before October 11. From October 17, cash and cheque payments will be accepted as before
3. Online payments: As of September 22, payments to our current online payment facility will cease. From October 18, we will begin to accept online payments using the Department of Education’s Parent Online Payment (POP) system.
Further details will be released as the term progresses. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we transition to our new finance system. If you have any questions, please contact our Secondary Office.

Primary ReportLITTLE SPROUTSAMAZING DAY!
Our annual Little Sprouts Day, held last Friday, was simply the best. Children, teachers and parents happily and excitedly joined in the spirit of the day by wearing the most amazing costumes and participating in every single activity that was on offer. It was amazing to watch the faces of travellers as they drove through Merriwa – I am sure they were wondering if they had arrived in Fairyland, when they saw fairies and wizards, minions and cowboys, witches and unicorns wandering up and down the streets.
Congratulations yet again to Miss Holden, and every staff member from primary and secondary campus who supported her in the organisation and management of such an incredible and unique day.
A big thank you goes out to the amazing businesses in Merriwa, who once again put on a sensational display of community spirit and showed their love of reading! Another thank you must go to the hard working ladies at the CWA who provided over 300 bags of biscuits for the students’ morning tea. We thank everyone for their support of this lovely day.
Kate Jones and Samantha Holden Special congratulations to the following students:

VET FACULTY REPORT
Our Year 12 Industrial Technology Timber students have been very busy this year completing their major design projects. Their HSC timber project, to showcase the skills they have learnt in woodwork. I am very pleased to say that every student in the class completed their project and their accompanying design folio. Individually and as a class group, this is a wonderful result. I will describe their projects along with the images.
Jordan Taylor and Mathew-Joel Haydon both made coffee tables from pale coloured Meranti and Radiata Pine. They invested their time and funds getting the timber for these jobs. Different in design, they are both well made classic tables showing good cabinet making techniques. Tatum Gleeson used her knowledge of sustainable timber to make a servery from recycled timber. She worked hard to get the recycled timber ready for reuse, de-nailing and squaring up. The servery has some lovely grain highlights across the top. Luke Cronin also used recycled timber, Iron Bark with fantastic colour, to make a beautiful rustic coffee table. The old raw timber was extensively cut down to size, then Luke used large dovetail and housing joints to fit it all together. James Hagley sourced his timber off a property, milled it on site to slab size pieces then fit it all together to make a servery bar. He also constructed a prefabricated drawer assembly with drawers, that slotted into the servery. James used a variety of native Australian timber, with the counter top looking amazing. Peita Cassar made a lovely jewellery cabinet from dark Meranti timber. She used brass trim and dovetail joints as highlights. Tempany Boland and Callum Telfer both used Radiata Pine; Tempany to make a large bedhead that required many pieces of timber to be biscuit jointed together, Callum to make a traditional coffee table with a routed edge.

SASS STAFF RECOGNITION WEEK
This week we have been celebrating and thanking our wonderful support staff – they are the people who keep our school running smoothly and safely, and keep us all smiling when things are tough. We held a thank you lunch earlier this week, and will be making presentations to each of these special individuals at tomorrow’s assembly.
We are so proud of the contributions of Mrs Fiona Wightman, Mr Richard Gibbons, Mrs Peteena Eveleigh, Mrs Yvonne Vidler, Mrs Mel Swan and Mrs Maria Gibbons who work every day on our campus. DRIVER EDUCATION EXPO
On Wednesday August 23, Year 9, 10 and 11 students from Merriwa Central School attended the Driver Education Expo at Tamworth Regional Entertainment Centre. The day include role play scenarios, information sessions, games and demonstrations aimed at giving students an insight to the devastation that road accidents can have and how best to avoid them.
Sessions included Police random drug test unit, heavy vehicle, NRMA insurance, Police, Road
and Maritime Services, Hunter New England Health drug and alcohol, Hunter New England Health brain injury and stopping distance and cornering demonstration. Each session provided student with a range of information, awareness of risks and responsibilities when driving, knowledge of the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving and encouraged young driver to plan ahead to minimise ‘risky’ choices. Driver education is extremely important it addresses the alarming rise in casualty and fatality statistics involving young drivers between the ages 16-25 years in New South Wales.
A small group amongst many other schools, the students from Merriwa Central had a great day and I believe they took away lots of important information. Thank you to students who volunteered during activities. Special mention to Clancy Martin who volunteered as ‘Skippy’ the Kangaroo, who was unfortunately hit by a car and also to Mr Lomax for assisting with the excursion.

This is a skill she has had to develop just to fit in the number of activities that she squeezes into her school day. Her incredible willingness to learn and eagerness to participate is a great example to her peers and a reminder of the rewards that are available in this school if you put your hand up to get involved with all the opportunities offered.

DRAMA AND DANCE LESSONS
“Wow! This is so fun! I love drama and dancing!” are just a few of the comments from students after their drama lessons with Anna Kerrigan and dance lesson with Lauren Wheatley. The students are very fortunate and grateful to have two amazingly talented people work with them. Anna teaches the students about different drama techniques and skills such as: how to project their voices, how to capture and engage an audience and how and where to stand on stage. The students are always very engaged when working with Anna and they love learning and trying out the new skills. Lauren teaches the students their dances for the school play. All students, regular dancers or not, are dancing and moving around enjoying themselves. Lauren shows the students how to be sharp with their movements and how to work as a team. Teachers will continue to work with their classes over the next two weeks to ensure they are ready and prepared for the play.
BOOK PARADE
On Wednesday August 23, St Joseph’s held their book parade to celebrate book week. The theme this year was ‘Escape to Everywhere’. Students dressed up and paraded some excellent costumes and showed off the work of some very talented parents, family members, neighbours or themselves. Students had to select characters from 2017 short listed books. Our librarian Colleen Oldman read some of the books to the audience and infants students acted out a story. Students enjoyed dressing up, reading the books and were engaged watching the parade.

DEBATING
Congratulations to the Stage 3 debating team on a wonderful performance at the annual Upper Hunter Debating Competition. Our team members Helena Parker (First Speaker), Jack Shannon (Second Speaker), Olivia Collins (Third Speaker) and Darcy Taaffe (Fourth Speaker/Team Captain) truly did St Joseph’s proud. The topic - that our society should be more tolerant - was challenging and controversial. Our team argued affirmative with convincing maturity, pointing out that marginalised groups deserve respect, and there can never be enough tolerance in the world. We were up against some tough competition this year, with students from Muswellbrook, Singleton, Scone and Denman all vying for the title of Upper Hunter Champion. Whilst we did not come away with the crown at the end of the day, the students put in 100% effort until the end. It takes a lot of courage to step so far out of one’s comfort zone and argue in front of an audience with only one hour to prepare, and all students should be proud of their efforts. Well done to our wonderful team!
LITTLE SPROUTS DAY
On Friday August 25, St Joseph’s participated in the community event – Little Sprouts Day. Little Sprouts Day is a community reading event where local schools and community organisations participate. All students dressed up in a variety of different costumes related to the book week theme – Escape to Everywhere. The children enjoyed the day out and about in the sun and going to different shops and businesses. A huge thank you to the organisers of the day and to the people who read stories to the children.

WIDDEN VISIT
Last week students and staff were invited to visit Widden as the Stud celebrated 150 years of continuous business in the Thompson family.
We toured the stud, visiting the foaling pens, the dry mare paddocks, the yearling paddocks and the yearling barn. Our tour guide, Georgia Merrick, explained in detail how each part of the farm contributed to the business as a whole.
After enjoying a yummy morning tea, we were treated to a talk by the owner of Rogan Josh (past Melbourne Cup winner) and viewed this year’s Melbourne Cup.
Our visit concluded with the viewing of the beginning of the stallion parade. Students thought the little foals brought out were quite cute.
I would like to thank Antony and Katie Thompson for offering a once in a lifetime experience to our students. All students enjoyed the visit.
BOOK WEEK PARADE
It was fantastic to see every student (and some staff) dress up for our Book Week parade last week. We had a huge variety of characters including Farmer Boggis from ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ and mum from ‘Are We There Yet?’ We also had a range of superheroes including Batman, Batgirl, The Hulk, Superman and Super Girl.’ Thank you to all parents and community for supporting our Book Week parade.
SEVEN STEPS TO WRITING
All classes have now moved onto a new focus in the seven steps to writing. Students are learning about how to build the tension in their stories to increase reader engagement. The tension scene comes just before the big climax at the end. In movies this is the scene of the soccer final, the exciting car chase or the heroine fighting for her life in a raging river. Great tension scenes should be strong and long.
We all know the tension scene in Little Red Riding Hood. Little Red Riding Hood arrives at the cottage and the wolf is in bed in Granny’s clothes. Little Red Riding Hood (who obviously needs glasses!) says:
‘Oh, Grandmother, what big ears you have!’
‘All the better to hear you with.’
‘Oh Grandmother, what big eyes you have!’
‘All the better to see you with.’
‘Oh Grandmother, what big hands you have!’
‘All the better to hold you with.’
‘Oh Grandmother, what big teeth you have!’
‘All the better to eat you with.’
See how the scene slowly builds up to be more and more dangerous - and thus frightening? We don’t start with the teeth, we start with the ears and the wolf trying to coax Little Red Riding Hood to come nearer and nearer.
TOP TIP:
Emotion always takes time to build up, so in tension scenes remember to start small and ‘escalate’ to a powerful climax.
ACTION ACTIVITY:
Read picture books with you children and look for tension scenes. Picture books are short, so it’s easy to find where the all-important tension builds before the ending. Here are some suggestions to get you started: The Gruffalo, Wombat Stew, Three Little Pigs, Hansel and Gretel.
TOUCH FOOTBALL GALA DAY
Next Tuesday our primary students are heading off to Scone to participate in the Scone Touch Football Gala Day. This will be a great opportunity for them to gain experience by playing teams from the bigger schools.
RURAL AND REMOTE CONFERENCE
Next week, I will be travelling to Sydney to attend a two day Rural and Remote Conference. The conference is focused around improving education in rural and remote schools. I look forward to learning about possible new initiatives and opportunities for our small school.

LITTLE SPROUTS
Last Friday, K-1-2 students travelled to Merriwa to participate in a day of Book Week activities.
Each student dressed up as a character from a book. The day began with a parade. All students walked around the hall so everyone could view
Merriwa RingerPage 12
their costume. Following this we were grouped with the students from Cassilis and began our day of activities by making bookmarks with high school students. During the day we walked to a variety of businesses within the town, where we were read a story. Our students also had opportunities to participate in physical activities and thoroughly enjoyed the football skills session organised by the ROAR group from the high school. Lunch was prepared and served to us by the high school students. The day concluded with the students learning some African dances taught by guest performers. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Renee Roper, Amy Nichols, Kendall Peters and Sian Raines for transporting the children to Merriwa. This was gratefully appreciated. Also a huge thank you to Ms Higgins for the entire organisation she undertook for us to participate in this day.

We would like to thank the Merriwa Central School for hosting Little Sprouts Day. Our children really enjoyed dressing up and they looked so cute. The children especially enjoyed the session at the Merriwa Library with craft materials and the opportunity to purchase books from the book fair.
On Friday September 1, we will be holding our school photo day at Merriwa Pre-School.
Monday Children: Individual portraits will commence at 9.00am.This will be followed by the Monday group photo
Tuesday Children: Individual portraits will commence at 10.30am then the group photo
If your child attends Wednesday and Thursday please arrive at Pre-School promptly for the major group photo at 12.00pm
After that the Wednesday and Thursday children individual portraits will be taken so families are released these will be followed by the Friday individual photos.
Please note that children who do not attend Friday sessions will need to be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian. We will use the space in the Merriwa Activity Centre and yard to accommodate waiting families. Some equipment will be set up in the front yard for your convenience. It may be helpful to bring along a little snack and a bottle of water for your child’s comfort. This will be an extremely busy day at Pre-School and your patience will be required.
Thank you to all who attended our Speech screener, please collect the results of the screener from the pigeon holes and follow referral advice.
On September 7 our Thursday group will be heading over to the Central school for “Weaving Magic” a show which focuses on craft and stories from Aboriginal culture. These small local excursions at this time of year are so important as the children become familiar with their future school environments.
Our school transition statements will be completed this term and shortly you will find a
section for the parents or guardians of school starters to complete to add to the information being provided to kindergarten teachers. When fully complete, the statements are a collection of information from families, teaching staff and the child themselves. They are an effective communication tool between schools and families and support the children as they go through this important step.
It is now Week 7 and Merriwa Activity Centre are busily devising the programme for vacation care during the upcoming school holidays.
(Correction from last week’s article)The centre will be available for opening between Monday September 25 – Friday October 6, during the school holidays
It is essential that you indicate to the service by September 11 if your child is attending and the dates required as we staff the centre on an as needed basis. We will need a minimum of 6 children to offer these long days of extended care to the community.
We are wishing all of our amazing Pre-School Dads a wonderful Father’s Day with their families.
Enjoy!

DATE FOR YOUR DIARYWomen’s Guild Meeting - First Thursday MonthlyMessy Church - Parish Hall - Last Friday Monthly: 3.30pm Men’s Breakfast - Parish Hall - Third Saturday: 7.30amREFLECTION: PENTECOST: 13 Matthew 16:21-27Immediately following Peter’s success story, when he accurately names Jesus as the Christ, comes his failure. The word Christ is Greek for the anointed one, or in Hebrew, the Messiah. The expectation was that the Messiah would be a son of David, and like King David would triumph over Israel’s enemies and win their freedom. This is not the type of Messiah that Jesus is. Jesus’ way of being the Messiah is to struggle against the oppressive spiritual powers that enslave and corrupt. This struggle will eventually take Jesus to his death.
When Jesus begins to explain this, Peter remonstrates with him for Peter’s idea is of a glorious and victorious Messiah. In this Peter is acting as the Tempter, Satan, who tries to lead Jesus away from his true path.
Jesus’ words to Peter put him in his right place. Peter is a disciple, and the place for disciples is behind Jesus so that they can be his followers. It is not Peter’s role yet to lead. So Peter is told ‘Get behind me’ – take up the place of a follower, and stop being an obstacle in front of me.
Sometimes I act like Peter. Sometimes I find myself telling God what to do, what would be the best course of action. Like Peter I forget my place. Not only can I tell God what is best, but I then can work very hard to see that this happens! It is not easy letting God be God and dealing with the anguish of being an ordinary human being struggling with life’s mysteries.
God let me know my true place.

GOOD SPACE
This is a program which we have been asked to assist. It is aimed at helping adult members of the community who may be a risk of suicide. Whereas Where There’s a Will, with which we are already involved, is aimed at youth, Good Space works to help older people.
At the Merriwa Show in September, another program will be available, so Rotary is looking at offering the Good Space program in our community early next year.
We’ll keep you posted.
FABIA
We were delighted and grateful to Fabia’s family for a substantial donation to our club’ s service work inrecognition of their appreciation for our hosting Fabia, from Switzerland, for six months of her Rotary Exchange.
HELEN RYAN is the District Governor of our Rotary District 9670. Helen took office in July and is now, over several months, visiting all of the clubs of our district, which stretches from the Hunter coastline to the far west of NSW.
Helen is a physiotherapist. She will be at our club in the latter half of September.
ROTARY AND MERRIWA MARKETS
Our club members enjoyed our second participation in the Markets, at which we did barbecue duties and thereby raised some dollars to help our community programs...our thanks to the Killens for the eggs they supplied for the occasion.

Christmas is just around the corner – seems like just yesterday we were celebrating 2016 Christmas day!
Before we get so far ahead for ourselves, for quite a number of years we have been thinking of the under privileged children in South East Asia, the Pacific and New Guinea and sending Christmas Boxes.
These boxes are now available, with the details of what we can put in and what is unsafe to include. Closing time for collection will be the first week in October.
The boxes from Merriwa go to the organiser in Scone, then to Sydney where they check and despatch overseas.
