Good morning, Badgers!

Riddle of the day – What letter is at the end of everything?

Fun fact of the day – The Kola Superdeep Borehole was drilled in Russia between 1970 and 1994 to a depth of 7.5 miles. It is the deepest artificial hole in the world.

Are you ready for another day of home learning?

Let’s get started J

9:00 until 9:30

Your first daily dose of half an hour of BRAIN POWER! Let’s mix things up a little Badgers…

Keep a record in your home learning book of the activities that you complete this week.

Please check out the class page for June’s reading challenge. How many of you can get bingo across the month? I am confident you can all get a full house throughout June.

Remember to keep Miss Ayers updated on your progress with evidence so that you can earn your rewards!

We have been continuing to read the Ickabog at school and have been really enjoying the story so far. What chapter have you read up to? A new chapter continues to be released everyday: https://www.theickabog.com/home/

Visit the website, ‘Once upon a picture’ and select an image of your choice. List as many adjectives as you can in 3-minutes to describe the image. After that, write one sentence predicting what will happen next: https://www.onceuponapicture.co.uk/

This weekend is the official first day of Summer as on Sunday, the 21st of June, it is Summer Solstice. This marks the longest day of the year. Do some research about the tradition and then construct an acrostic poem presenting your findings using the word ‘solstice’.

Write a review of a TV programme/film that you have watched recently. Think about the 5-finger retell as a tool to help you (setting, characters, beginning, middle and end) but remember – no spoilers!

Pick one of the spellings from the Year 5/6 spelling mat that you are unsure of. Set a timer for 2-minutes and see how many of that word you can write in the time. Remember – only correct spellings count towards your score!

Go on Maths Frame Multiplication Check and see how many times table questions you can answer correctly out of 25. You will have 4 seconds to answer each question: https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/477/Multiplication-Tables-Check

Set up an obstacle course at home (inside or outside) and time yourself on how long it takes you to complete it. Can you beat your time over the week or challenge a family member to complete it too?

June’s reading challenge is still available for you to have a go at! I would love to see even more of you getting involved this month and sending me pictures of you completing your bingo activities J

Over the last 12 years, over £30 million has been raised by Soccer Aid and has enabled Unicef to help more children than any other humanitarian organisation. Could you have a family game of football this week to mark the occasion?

English – Writing FocusTuesday 16th June 2020L/O - To understand how authors use language, including figurative language

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper. She sells seashells on the seashore.

Pick one of the tongue twisters above. How many times can you say it correctly in 1-minute?

• Why do you think writers use alliteration as a technique in their writing?

Today, we are going to focus on the ‘M’ of ‘SHAMPOO’ and think about metaphors and similes.

Can you complete the ones below? • “The pacing troops were as fast as…” (Simile – compare something to something else)• “The soldiers in their tin hats were…” (Metaphor – state something is something else)

Page 5: Good morning, Badgers! Riddle of the day –What letter is ... · Fun fact of the day –The Kola Superdeep Borehole was drilled in Russia between 1970 and 1994 to a depth of 7.5

English – Writing FocusLook at the template (left) and complete with your own similes and metaphors. You must write out the full sentence in your book ensuring you complete the gaps with your own comparison.

The purpose of similes and metaphors are to generate a vivid picture in your reader’s head and particularly when discussing something as serious as World War 2, it enables to horrific image to be conveyed by comparing it to something that the reader is perhaps more familiar with.

For example:

• The bombs dropped from the grey skies like plummeting meteors, destroying everything in their pathway without concern.

• The soldiers were walking corpses; their bloodshot eyes and relentless plodding feet the only signs of their existence.

As an extension, can you write two sentences of your own including a metaphor in one and a simile in the other?

Page 6: Good morning, Badgers! Riddle of the day –What letter is ... · Fun fact of the day –The Kola Superdeep Borehole was drilled in Russia between 1970 and 1994 to a depth of 7.5

Choose two similes and one metaphor from the poem ‘How to Die’ (below). Copy them into your home learning book recreating the template on the next slide in your book. Using the template, you are then to explain each and the meaning of the similes and metaphor.

Times tablesSpend 15 minutes practicing your times tables.

Times tables ideas:

• Complete some of your school times table booklet – revise and check your recall is speedy.

• Play on ‘Hit the button’ or the ‘Mathsframe times table check’ online.

• Play Nerf Tables/Splat – Stick the answers to a chosen table around the room and get asked a question. Run to/shoot the correct answer.

• See how quickly you can write down a set of times tables (multiplication and division facts). Can you beat your personal best?

• Times table bingo – Grab yourself a 1-100 grid and mark off times tables as they are read out to you.

SpellingsSpend 15 minutes practicing your spellings.

Spellings ideas:

• Acrostic poem – Chose a spelling and write an acrostic poem for that word.

• Quick write – Write the word as many times as you can within a time limit.

• Draw an image around the word – Make an association with the spelling to help you to memorise it.

• Pyramid words – Think of each letter separately and then reverse it so that you end up with a diamond.

• Silly sentences – Make up ‘silly sentences’ containing the spelling you are trying to learn e.g.

• Rainbow writing – Use coloured pencils, bubble writing, all capitals or dotted letters to make the words more memorable.

Lunch Time Lunch time challenge!

During lockdown, we have not only missed seeing family and friends but also, there have been lots of places we have all probably missed visiting and maybe some of us were due to go on holidays that have been cancelled too. This doesn’t stop us dreaming though! Have a think about a place you would either love to visit in the future or a place you have visited before that holds special memories and you would be keen to revisit. You might even have an imaginary land or destination in mind that you would love to explore! Across the week, you are to make this place, creating your very own city using all the materials you can get your hands on. Try to recycle – old cardboard boxes, shoeboxes, carton and toilet rolls all make great structures!

• Monday: Planning – Begin thinking about which place you are going to base your model’s design on. Is it a place you have visited before? Is it a brand new place you are longing to explore? Today is a great day to start planning – you might want to sketch your plan and annotate it with all your amazing ideas.

• Tuesday: Gathering materials – Before you can get hands on and actually start making your model, you will need to think carefully about the materials you will need to make it a success. Label the materials you need on your plan although remember, you may have to compromise as resources may be limited! Try to be inventive with this – are there materials lying unused around the house that you could use or recycle any old food packaging to make your masterpiece?

• Wednesday: Making – Today is your chance to get creating. You have thought carefully about your design and have gathered all the materials you need to make it so now you are ready to get started! Try to make your creation as inventive and colourful as possible – you will need to convince the judges that your city is the best place to visit!

• Thursday: Today, it is time to make any finishing touches. Don’t forget to email a picture, explanation and any other work you’ve done towards your city across the week over to Miss Ayers by 1pm –[email protected]

• Friday: We will announce Mrs Macey’s winner of the competition un a newsletter which will be uploaded to the website.

• GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN J

Afternoon choices

Over the course of the week, you need to spend time completing the set tasks on the following subjects. You may choose which afternoon you would like to tackle each subject as long as by Friday, you have covered them all and have shown completion of the tasks in your book:• Art• French• History/Geography• Science• ICT• Reading comprehension• RRR

See details of this week’s required tasks on the following slides.

Page 22: Good morning, Badgers! Riddle of the day –What letter is ... · Fun fact of the day –The Kola Superdeep Borehole was drilled in Russia between 1970 and 1994 to a depth of 7.5

Weekly tasksArt – Our artist of the week is Wassily Kandinsky.1) As an introductory task, find out 10 facts about him – you may present these in your books however you

wish e.g. fact file, poster, acrostic poem.2) Which piece of art of his is your favourite? Research this online and then write a paragraph about what it is

that you particularly like about it. Challenge – Can you use technical vocabulary to describe it? E.g. Colour, shape, composition, shade, tone.

3) Recreate one of his pieces in your book and then evaluate it, giving yourself three positives and a future target.

Science – Our topic this term will continue to be living things but also, their habitats.1) This week, I would like you to get creative and show me how much you have learnt about life cycles

over the past term. I would like you to design your own cartoon depicting the life cycle of your chosen organise. You will need paper, pencils/pens and books/internet access. Once you have decided which life cycle you would like to recreate, you will need to research so you are confident on each stage of their life cycle. You may create a short story around the life cycle or create a cartoon style diagram. Why not create a lift-the-flap book depicting the chosen style or create a flip-book animation of your life cycle?

2) Once you have finished, you could also create a butterfly feeder by recycling an old plastic bottle and sugar water. The instructions are on the next slide.

Weekly tasksFrench - Our topic this half term is Time Travelling.1) Read through the separate PowerPoint presentation and listen to the sound files to ensure your pronunciation is

correct.2) Complete one of the work sheets on the following slides, writing your answers in your book. You may choose

your own sheet depending on how confident you are (* = not confident yet, ** = confident, *** = ready for a challenge).

History/Geography – Our topic this half term is World War 2.1) As we think about the end of war and the key events that led it to cease, think about the moments that can

now be considered a ‘turning point’ in the war. This week, I would like you to research the following events, making sure you cover at least 3 of the 5 and make notes of them in your home learning books: The Battle of Britain, The German Invasion of Russia, The Bombing of Pearl Harbour, The Dambusters Raid and The Normandy Landings. You may use the internet to research this but try to ensure that your findings are presented creatively – maybe you could create a fact file about 3 of them drawing illustrations to explain your points further.

2) Once you have decided on the 3 events you are interested in and have researched them fully, I would like you to pick the one you consider to be the most significant ‘turning point’ in the war. You are then going to persuade everyone else (including me!) that your chosen event had the biggest influence on ending the war. Using the following questions, put together a case ensuring you send me your findings so I can be persuaded too: when and where did the event take place? Who was involved? Key facts (in chronological order). How did this event affect future events in the war? What might have happened if the outcome of this event was different? Was this event a key turning point in the war? Why/why not?

Weekly tasksICT – Our topic this half term is Scratch. If you don’t already have Scratch on your computer, visit this website to use Scratch online: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/editor/?tutorial=getStarted\1. What other effects could be added to the Maze game now to enhance the final version? What would

make the game more exciting? Recreate the template on the next slide in your home learning books so that you can jot down ideas for effects.

2. You can also add commentary to blocks to make your own game even more effective – if this interests you, follow the instructions on slide 7 of the weekly PowerPoint – this can be found on the class page on the school website.

3. Don’t forget to save the new version of your game by clicking ‘file’ and ‘save as’. Test and debug your code as you make changes.

Further guidance and a step-by-step guide can be found on the class pages as a separate PowerPoint. This will give you more detail about any of the stages if you need a refresher. If you feel confident with Scratch already, you are more than welcome to experiment and start creating your game.

Weekly tasksReading comprehension

1) Begin by reading through the text on the next slide.2) Answer the questions carefully in your book, stating the question number and ensuring you answer,

where appropriate, in full sentences.3) Once you have answered all the questions, the answers are underneath the image of the questions. With

an adult, check through your answers and see how you have done.

RRR – Our article this week is article number 2

1) Each week, we will have a different right as a focus. As with French, there will be a presentation uploaded to the class page on the school website for you to work through. This will give information on the article itself as well as lots of learning ideas for you to have a go at. It is a flexible resource so allows you to dip into the areas you would like to have a go at.

2) Please send pictures to me of any work you complete on this so that I can share it with Mrs Bottle – I know she would be thrilled to see it and we can then share it with on the RRSA (Rights Respecting Schools Award) pages also.
