JANUARY 2015 MESSAGE FROM PASTOR STANTON I recently heard that 2015— according to Chinese astrology—is the “Year of the Sheep”. This, apparently, is not such a great thing if you are a couple considering bringing a child into this world. 2014 was an auspicious “Year of the Horse.” Sheep, though, are meek creatures, and raised for nothing more than slaughter. The thought is that children born this year will be followers, not leaders. Many Chinese believe they will be destined for heartbreak or failed marriages and that they will be unlucky in business, too. Have you ever noticed Christians call every year since the birth of Christ, “The Year of Our Lord”? Of course, Our Lord is likened in Scripture to a lamb… led to slaughter. The meekness of Christ is at the core of his ultimate power: the power to take the world’s abuse and transform it into peace, love and strength. For us, every year is a Year of the Sheep! What will 2015 look like for First Lutheran? Our strategic plan has laid out many ideas, of course, from how we offer hospitality to new staff hirings. In fact, we were so excited about hiring more staff, we started in December. Aliyah Richling was already serving as our Childrens’ Choir Director, but was formally hired last month. Our other addition is Bridget Crave, a member of First for years who became ready in the past year to make a significant career shift. She now assumes the title of Small Groups Director. Ever since I came here in January 2008, I have heard members and leaders talking about ideas for how to improve our small group ministry. Who has the time to organize them? Who has the know-how to train them? How do we even define them? Who is and who is not a small group? When do they meet? Where? How are they resourced? We have known for some time that small groups are the lifeblood of many thriving congregations. INSIDE MESSAGE FROM PASTOR KARYN “In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’” ~ Matthew 2:1-2 B y the time this newsletter is in your hands, we will be right in the middle of the twelve days of the Christmas season of the Church. We will have sung Joy to the World, decorated the trees and opened presents, made and eaten and given away yummy cookies, spent time with family and friends. While we will still be in the midst of Christmas the world will have moved on. Yet, after weeks of waiting, we still celebrate the birth of Jesus. That celebration culminates on January 6th with the celebration of Epiphany, the day when those wise people from the East came to visit Jesus. For millennia people have traveled to Jerusalem, to the holy sites, to pay homage to their God. These wise folk were the first to visit because of Jesus and for centuries followers of Jesus have made a pilgrimage to this land we call holy. Two years ago, I was privileged enough to make such a pilgrimage. It was life changing. In fact it is not overstating the case to say it changed the trajectory my life was on. Ever since that trip, it has been my desire to lead a group of people on a trip to Israel and the West Bank. 2015 is the year for that desire to be realized. MESSAGE FROM PASTOR STANTON

I recently heard that 2015— according to Chinese

astrology—is the “Year of the Sheep”. This, apparently, is not such a great thing if you are a couple considering

bringing a child into this world. Have you ever noticed Christians call every year since the

birth of Christ, “The Year of Our Lord”?

Our other addition is Bridget Crave,

a member of First for years who became ready in the past year to make a significant career shift. “In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’” ~ Matthew 2:1-2

we still celebrate the birth of Jesus. That celebration culminates on January 6th with the celebration of Epiphany, the day when those wise people from the East came to visit Jesus.

You are invited to join me in an “eye-opening alternative tour of Israel and the West Bank” October 8–20. We will be guided by Israeli and Palestinian tour guides who will help us explore the Biblical themes of reconciliation and social justice. We will travel from the glittering gold domes and contested holy sites of Jerusalem to the stark natural beauty of the Negev’s endangered ecosystems. All the while taking a prayerful look at the religious, political and economic issues facing the region. We will meet with Jewish, Muslim and Christian people, explore the places where Jesus walked and tackle some of the difficult questions of faith in a broken world. This trip is designed for adults, however I am allowing high school students to be a part of it if they are accompanied by a parent/grandparent. The cost of the trip will be between $3,000 and $4,000.

No amount of pictures or reading of books or articles will ever replace seeing this incredibly beautiful land and meeting the strong, passionate people who live there. I encourage you to prayerfully consider

taking this pilgrimage. We will have an informational meeting on January 11th between services. At that time I will share more details and have a firm cost for the trip.

Blessings to you during the remaining Christmas season and into the season of Epiphany. May you be open to the movement of the Holy Spirit and may you be inspired by the love seen in the Christ child.

Pastor Karyn Bodenschatz [email protected]

FROM PASTOR KARYN, CONT. FROM PAGE 1

You are invited to join me in an “eye-opening

alternative tour of Israel and the West

Bank” October 8–20.

We have known for some time

that small groups are the lifeblood of many thriving

congregations. Small groups are

the arena for biblical literacy to improve,

fellowship to be shared and a greater sense of belonging.

It is through a more intimate setting with fewer people that a big church like ours becomes relevant and helpful. Small groups are the arena for biblical literacy to improve, fellowship to be shared and a greater sense of belonging. They also develop leaders, gather stronger engagement from members and increase financial giving. Knowing the many benefits, though, has not translated into knowing how to create and sustain them in a macro sense. I believe God has done VERY well to call Bridget into this work to answer some of these questions for us, define terms and help grow small groups at First from a strong niche ministry for some to a core value for all our members. Welcome to the staff, Bridget!

Of course, 2015 will see one more new hire as well. Our Director of Discipleship for Youth is being prepared right now to serve at First Lutheran. That does not mean we’ve chosen someone, or that we’ve even begun looking. But we will soon. We hope to cast out a job description this month, interview next month and hire someone by April 1. It promises to be a thorough search with many qualified candidates. Please pray for the process, for wisdom among those who ask the questions, and peace to those who

answer them. Our full time youth director will have their hands full immediately. I can’t wait to meet him/her!

2014 ended with a bang at First Lutheran as more than 1,400 people worshipped on Christmas Eve/Day and our giving once again increased significantly as compared to 2013. (Final numbers aren’t in, but it was a good year! Come to First’s potluck on February 15 for the final numbers.) Pastor Karyn and I continue to count ourselves blessed to serve this congregation. Carla and I continue to feel fortunate to raise our kids amidst the many opportunities our area offers. 2015, the Year of Our Lord, promises to continue our growth as a church, as families and as individuals. I pray you may enjoy a blessed New Year!

Busted! Do you really know what you know about Martin Luther? In its January issue, The Lutheran does some “Lutheran myth-busting,” looking at 10 things you thought you knew about Martin Luther. To help your discussion, visit www.thelutheran.org for a study guide (click on “study guides” on the left-hand side).

Happy New Year! It’s that time of year when many people make—and soon break—resolutions. In her January column for The Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton says go ahead and make those reso-lutions—but she asks readers to remember that “in baptism God has given us new life, a new year, a new day.”

New series ... same series. In The Luther-an’s January issue, columnist Peter Marty begins a series titled “A lexicon of faith.” Using key words, such as “reconciliation,” he’ll offer something of a primer on the basic elements of Christian belief. “Deeper understandings” is back for another year with Michael Cooper-White, president of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Get-tysburg (Pa.), taking over editing duties. Teaching theologians will continue to go in-depth on our faith and on challenging issues of our day.

We are congregations. In the January issue of The Lutheran, see the rose that blooms in the Arizona desert … learn about “Dakota determination” and a congregation that rebuilt after a fire … travel overseas where international congregations offer a “large welcome” … think about using art as a Lenten discipline ... or pack a pew with donations for a food pantry.

Stop and think. The Lutheran is a resource for adult forums. In the January issue, ponder the “Uneasy wildness” of Epiphany. Think about Christmas carols—the songs of the world. Look at “Preaching in a digital age.” And “Take your EQ temperature” (to help your discussion of “EQ,” find a study guide at www.thelutheran.org; menu is on the left).

We are church. In The Lutheran’s January issue ... learn how seminarians and con-gregations benefit from internships … see how an ELCA college goes off-site to teach life lessons … visit an ELCA-related hospi-tal that meets patients’ needs with cultural competence … and meet a father and son who both lead social service agencies.

DRAWING FROM THE WELLNext retreat: Sat., January 10, 9am-1pm It is no secret that we are a people who juggle many things at the same time. It is also no secret that those moments when we can step out of our normal routines and spend some time with others for a few hours or a few days provides for us a time of renewal and refreshment. The spiritual discipline of retreat is one that is often overlooked and under used. Yet it is by far one of the most powerful.First Lutheran is inviting all women to participate in this discipline, where we will explore the idea of wellness. Each meeting consists of some sort of physical activity, lunch somewhere local and then, using the ELCA’s wellness wheel, we will explore one other aspect of wellness. These meetings are on the second Saturday of the month, from 9am–1pm, and you can participate in all or part of it. Contact Pastor Karyn for more info: [email protected].

FIRST’S ANNUAL POTLUCK!Sunday, February 15, 11:45am All members are invited to First’s Annual Potluck where we will eat together and our kids will play together, all while the adults share our greatest faith stories from the past year. STEPHEN MINISTRY

My name is Nancy and I will be your Stephen Minister.

I remember greeting my first care receiver with those words about six years ago.

Since then I have had the privilege of serving two other care receivers, each in a totally different difficult life circumstance.

When the first Stephen Minister class was started at First Lutheran, I thought it may be something I would be interested in, but I just wasn’t certain. Would I be capable of the training? Would I have the time? Is this what I was called to do? I passed on

that opportunity, but the idea of serving just wouldn’t leave my mind. When the second class was started, I knew I was called to serve. I was compelled to serve.

The training was comprehensive with the greatest emphasis on confidentiality, listening and providing Christ-centered care, the crux of the Stephen Ministry program. It was stressed again and again that my role as a Stephen Minister is “to care,” not “to cure.” As a Stephen Minister, I cannot “fix” any problem, but I can care and be present as those I ministered to were going through some difficult times. Maybe it was a serious illness or death, or the death of a loved one, or the loss of a job, or a divorce, or relationship problems within a family. As a Stephen Minister I am not required to be an expert in any of these situations, but rather

I am called to walk with others through this difficult time. I am called to listen, to care, to be present and to pray.

I had heard from other Stephen Ministers that they felt they received far more than they gave. I can only echo that experience. I have learned to be more compassionate, to be a better listener, to really care. I have learned how to pray and to be present in silence. I have grown as a Christian.

If anyone is considering serving as a Stephen Minister, I would encourage you to talk with any of the current Stephen Ministers, with our Stephen Minister leaders, Gloria Kubiak or Randy Nedrelo, or with Pastor Karyn. I encourage you to investigate a class. One will be starting this spring. You will truly be a blessing and be blessed.

Nancy Beguin Stephen Minister

If you know of someone who needs a care giver,

please speak with Pastor Karyn, or call the

church office.

It was stressed again and again that my role as a Stephen Minister

is “to care,” not “to cure.” As a Stephen

Minister, I cannot “fix” any problem, but I can care and be present…

GOD’S HANDS & FEET

GETTING YOUR FEET WETYears ago as a family,

when my girls were small, we would go ice fishing. Perry would open up several holes to fish in and start fishing, while I would

try to fish and watch the girls playing in the snow. The girls would run around, make houses in the snow and play with the fish being caught. We would remind them often to watch out for fishing holes and not go too far from mom or dad. As they would play one of them or both of them would step into a fishing hole and get one or both feet wet before it was time to go home. I was usually prepared for this and brought with us dry socks and bread bags. We would change out of the wet socks, put dry ones on, with bread bags over them, and the feet would go back into the boots, after dumping all the water out. Getting your feet wet was the cost of being together as an ice-fishing family, and being prepared for wet feet was part of that.

Soon we will prepare to start our action teams, and as part of that preparation we will do a participation survey. Everyone will be asked to take this survey, either with paper or online, so that we can get our teams going. We want each member of our congregation to get their feet wet and be on an action team. We are called to prepare for action. Luke 12:35 says, “Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit.” We are not called to sit in our pews, but to take action. Our church ministry involves all of us doing our part and getting our feet wet by being a part of an action team, being involved in events, participating in small groups and striving for discipleship. Taking the participation survey is our way of getting dressed, for both the individual taking it and the church getting the results. When we involve ourselves by participating in the life of the church, not just worship, that is when our lamp, the light of Christ, can brightly shine.

The participation survey will come out soon so I encourage each of you to take the

survey, dressing yourselves for the work of the church, so that Christ’s light can shine bright. I am looking forward to every member at First being dressed and prepared for action, which will lead to a vibrant life of faith and ministry. If you have any questions contact me at [email protected].

INTRODUCING FIRST’S DIRECTOR OF SMALL GROUP MINISTRY

A year or so after moving to Onalaska and joining First Lutheran Church, I

was dropping off my middle school aged son for a church outing and expressed my parent-of-a-teenager stress and frustration with another parent. She said to me, “You need a Bible study.” She was right. What I needed was an opportunity to share my frustrations and hopes as a parent, and an opportunity to learn how to listen to God and see how God was working in the life of my child and in me. I started to see that when I joined a small group Bible study here at First.

As part of a small group, I have also developed deep, honest relationships with the other members of my small group. We have walked with each other through life struggles, celebrated many joyful transitions together, and learned to see and talk about how God is working in our lives.

I know that this type of connection and relationship is what many of you desire as well. You are looking for a way to connect with some other members, grow in your faith and have the support you need as you walk through life.

That’s why I’m excited to be the Director of Small Group Ministry. In this new position I will help identify and train people to lead small groups. It’s not hard once you know what to do, but it can seem daunting, so I am here to help lead the way. A frustration for current groups is finding a good study. I will identify a long list of resources for studies that meet a wide variety of needs, including pure Bible study, books on various faith topics, DVD studies for those who don’t want to read a lot, etc. In addition, I will help match people who are interested in being part of a group to a group that fits their needs. I am working 20 hours a week. Some of that time will be spent in the back office at the church, and some of it will be spent meeting with small groups, training leaders, and meeting with other churches that do small groups well to learn from them.

While I am passionate about small groups, this is a new position for me and a new step for First. I will be asking for your ideas: what has worked for you as a member of a small group, why you’ve never been in a small group, what are your fears and hopes. I pray that you will be open to sharing with me and willing to try new approaches. I also ask for your prayers as I start this new journey. After 30 years working in marketing for corporate America, this is a big change for me but a change that I am excited about. May God bless us all in 2015!

As part of a small group, I have also

developed deep, honest relationships

with the other members of my small

group. We have walked with each other through life

struggles, celebrated many joyful

transitions together, and learned to see and talk about how

God is working in our lives.

Happy New Year!!!Where did 2014 go? It seems like yesterday that we were getting ready for the first day of school and now we are planning the rest of the school year’s activities. We have many fun things coming up that we are excited about! We are going to a play in February at Viterbo, Springfest is just around the corner, and we will be playing in the sandbox before we know it.December was a busy month in the preschool. We started yoga in the MWF and TTh class. The kids are loving it and learning to stretch and balance our bodies. We also had our second Book Munchers that was all about Snowman. We read a book about snowman, we made an adorable snowman ornament and made marshmallow snowmen. It is so wonderful to see all the parents interacting! It was “snow” much fun!

ine!“Generously and extraordinarily blessed!”

Those are the words that come to mind when we reflect on the 2014 Sunday school program.Within the halls of our Sunday school, on any ordinary Sunday, your heart would be warmed to witness the examples of generous lives and extraordinary blessings we experienced in 2014…..Over 200 kids regularly attended Sunday school with many parents, teachers, opening leaders, and helpers dedicating time and energy to building faith in our kids.A note went out asking for lights so that we could have Christmas lights for the Christmas program. This was accomplished because families so generously donated Christmas lights and candles. We have had members of the congregation step up and help lead when teachers have been ill. We have had members step up and become a lead teacher when teachers move. What wonderful examples of generosity! As we head into 2015, we will continue to give thanks for God’s generous love and for the continuous support, faith, presence and humbleness of so many who continuously support and gift our Sunday school program!

The OWLs did not let the cold of December slow them down. We started the month with a great day at Sugar Creek, including a Scandinavian lunch complete with lefse. The afternoon musical program was lively and entertaining. Our Christmas potluck was a feast to behold with great food and many Christmas goodies, followed by a spirited competition of Christmas trivia and guess the carol. The holiday spirit was further enhanced with the many beautiful Christmas sweaters worn to the event (see photo). Fun was had by all.

Even though January is the depth of winter the OWLs will not be deterred. Back by popular demand is the OWLs Friday Night Out. Our fun will begin on Friday, January 16th with dinner at a local restaurant followed by an intimate concert at the Pump House. The Pump House has a small theater that allows excellent interaction between the performers and audience. The guest artist Johnsmith is an Irish folk singer/songwriter. Johnsmith has the ability to captivate any audience with his creative acoustic melodies and his powerfully moving lyrics. He will be accompanied by his long time friend and String Ties member Dan Sebranek. The cost of a ticket is $21. We will meet at the church at 4:30 on Friday, January 16th. If you are plan to attend, notify Brian Narveson ([email protected] or 608.526.9700) by Monday, January 12th, so tickets can be reserved ahead of time. The Pump

House is handicap accessible with an elevator up to the theater. Dinner is on your own.

The January potluck will be at noon on Wednesday, January 21st in the fellowship hall. Rob Wessler speaks about his experiences teaching in China. Most of you will remember the excellent presentation Rob gave us 2 years ago about his experience conducting musical summer camps in Haiti. We are pleased to have Rob back to talk about his adventures in China.

The OWLs are a group at First that welcomes anyone, First Lutheran members or not, who are 55+. For information or to ask questions, contact Brian Narveson at [email protected].
