Are you ready for SOLAS ?SOLAS overview event – hosted by John Good Shipping
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has amended the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) to require, as a condition for loading a packed container onto a ship for export, that the container has a verified weight declared to the Vessel Operator and Marine Terminal Operator.
At John Good Shipping, we like to help our customers gain a clearer understanding about the shipping process, in order to provide a more transparent and smooth transportation of cargo. On Thursday 31 March 2016, John Good Shipping hosted an Invitation only event at The Country Park Inn, Hessle, to give clients and John Good Group staff an overview of the new SOLAS regulation amendment on Verified Gross Mass, coming into force on 1 July 2016.
The guest speaker was Captain Richard W A Brough OBE, BA who is technical adviser for ICHCA (The International Cargo Handling Coordination Association).

Appraisals and Training for the Appraisers
• We believe that in a rapidly changing and competitive world, our people make the real difference between us and our competitors
• That is why we are trying hard to create a safe, modern and open environment for you that is both challenging and rewarding
• In order to achieve our ambitious growth targets, to live our values and to respond to your feedback we have been preparing to introduce regular employee appraisals
• Theses will be an opportunity for two way communication between you and your line manager
• They will focus on how we can work together to meet both individual aspirations and those of the Company in this ever changing world
• The training for our appraisers commenced at the end of 2015. This training will continue into the summer of 2016 and it is our intention that all of our people will have an initial appraisal during 2016
• Some of you will already have had an appraisal and we hope that you have fond this to be a really positive experience. For those who have not yet had your appraisal meeting your line manager will be in touch with you during this year to arrange a date and time to spend dedicated time with you
The Appraiser training, run by outside consultant, Sarah Coope, is being staged over time. The first course was run at the end of November last year. Those trained have held their appraisal meetings and following feedback from them and those appraised, we have changed some of the formats and forms used to make them more helpful.
Following these changes, the second Appraiser training session was held on 12 April – (participants pictured above at RudstoneWalk in South Cave: Jon Garnier, Adam Grimwood, Steve Mudd, Julie Ornsby, Rob Davenport, Andy Sedman, David Gladwin, Rachel Daviesand Brian Long) . Two further courses are planned in May.

Your Health and Safety RepresentativesAs you are aware everyone at work has responsibility to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. We do, however, have a number of colleagues who are Health and Safety Representatives, First Aiders and Fire Wardens at each site and this information is now available on Goodnet.
Group Health and Safety Meeting The most recent group health and safety meeting was held on 21 April 2016 at Stoke Rochford. The minutes from this meeting will be available on Goodnet shortly.
Lighting UpdateFollowing on from the last newsletter, new lighting has continued to be fitted at both Felixstowe Warehousing and TEPS.
The next phase of lighting at Felixstowe Warehousing was completed this month and TEPS completed fitting new lighting in Warehouse B in February 2016. Warehouse B is 40,000 sq ft. thus making working conditions safer and more effective whilst at the same time saving on energy.

IT UpdateCougar Freight have recently moved into new offices in Cottingley near Bradford. These new offices have a far more secure and modern ITinfrastructure than the old offices with greater potential for expansion. Once further upgrades are completed, a quicker connection to the internet will be available. This will allow Cougar to properly utilise the Group’s IT infrastructure and servers.
The TEPS warehouses in Hull are now on a single fibre internet connection so the upload and download speeds are far more dynamic than before. Currently, the onsite IT infrastructure is being consolidated into an onsite secure cabinet with a view to linking the IT network at TEPS with that at Bridgehead for back-‐up and infrastructure purposes.
For John Good Shipping users in Cargowise One, Workflows are now live for sea import jobs. This facility sends automatic email notifications to customers when specified milestones are completed on Shipments. Within Shipments, some custom fields are now automatically completed when specific milestones are reached. If further information or instructions on how to set up customers to receive email notifications is required, then please see your site AEO representative or contact the IT department.
Since the last newsletter the final live work processes within the Group have now been migrated from the AS400 onto Cargowise
One. Many thanks to Nickie Preston and Jane Nash, who each put a lot of work into finally making this happen. The AS400 is now only required for archive purposes. It will shortly be decommissioned from Bridgehead and relocated. We will endeavour to keep the system available for as long as possible but the support on the AS400 has now expired.
As many staff will already be aware, Exclaimer software has been implemented across our email service so that signatures are automatically added to emails no matter what device the email is sent from. This ensures emails look professional and solves many of the bloating mailbox problems that curse the traditional methods of adding signatures.
On Thursday 21st January, DAN Shipping was invited to Hull Truck Theatre to attend the exclusive preview episode of a documentary series – Sea Cities – that BBC Two is airing, telling the stories of people who live and work around Britain’s ports and rivers.
This episode featured the Humber Estuary, which is one of the most treacherous waterways in the UK, as well as one of the busiest, focusing
on how the Humber dock workers co-‐ordinate a rare cruise ship visit to Hull. It also highlights the teams whose unseen work helps keep the shipping lanes safely open and observes the teams who manage cargoes in and out of Immingham, which is the largest cargo port in the UK.
DAN Shipping arranged access for the BBC to board the MV “Popi-‐S” which, at the time, was carrying the world’s largest cargo of biomass into Immingham. Liaising with owners, charterers, shippers and the BBC, DAN Shipping ensured all indemnities and documentation were in place to allow film crew to board the vessel with the inbound pilot and film the passage from the anchorage to the berth with some interesting developments along the
way. Their contribution also included liaising closely with the BBC prior to filming and during the vessel’s stay in port.
Steve Pullen, Managing Director of DAN Shipping said: “It was a pleasure to be invited to attend the exclusive preview screening of the documentary following our work in assisting the BBC with their filming.“When the BBC initially approached us to help them with their documentary we were more than happy to offer our services. We can see why they chose to film the MV “Popi-‐S”, not only because of its size but also as the vessel is so vital to the UK’s power supply.”
DAN Shipping is one of the UK’s leading independent port agents, handling a range of cargoes at ports throughout the UK.

Over the last couple of months – I have had to work very closely with a couple of my largest customers to secure their future business.
So with the speedy replies & constant updating by you & your team , also the keen prices – I’ve not only kept this business – but also had feedback from my customers to say thank you to me for the work we have been doing.

Employee Spotlight – Malcolm Ellis
To all my colleagues
Eventually the time has arrived for me to close my career in transport and open the door to full retirement. It is a strange feeling having worked for so many years and with the subject of retirement always so far, far away – and now it is here right under my nose! How time flies!
However it is a situation realised by millions of people before me, so I am in very good company.Immediately, this event opens the door to a flood of memories throughout my working life, the majority good, some great and also some dark...
Yet the time feels absolutely right to now move on and turn to things that I and Karen my wife, want to do. There are so many things to do and as my wife says “ I will aspire to boredom”!
Here is a brief synopsis of the 44 years of my working life:
On leaving school I went to college and gained a degree in Business Studies and Marketing. I went on to join Marks and Spencer as a management trainee with a view to store management. The competition to get in to M and S was extremely tough, but I was lucky enough to be taken on and trained for a year. However it became clear that this business wasn’t for me and so after the year, we mutually agreed to part company. After some thought, I decided that I
wanted a career in something that was accessible worldwide and onseeing an advertisement in the Yorkshire Post for a shipping clerk in Leeds, I applied and secured the job.So, I started in the shipping business in June 1974, when I joined the Shipping Line OCL –Overseas Containers Ltd, at the Leeds office on Leeds Container Base, Stourton.
Containerisation was still developing from its initial start in the early 1960s, when the shipping industry needed to radically reform how it worked.
Conventional shipping was increasingly too slow and too expensive. Ships were in port longer and longer through industrial disputes and at the same time there was a rapid rise in the damage and pilferage of cargo with the ensuing rapid rise in very expensive insurance claims. Containers, container bases, container ships, rail freight etc were all introduced and the industry transformed. Speed, frequency, reliability and cost were key.
I gained initial experience as Import Clerk, then Operations Clerk, Export Sales Coordinator for the South Africa Trade Manager and then as Export Representative on the road visiting customers. Working in Leeds was great experience and great fun and still to this day, I meet with colleagues from the Leeds Office once a year, over lunch and catch up on news. They are a great bunch of people –professional but with great fun and now life-‐long friends.
I also spent many years working from the OCL Manchester Office as Account Executive and later worked from Liverpool Office.
In this time OCL eventually became P&OCL, (Peninsular and OrientContainer Lines) then P&O Containers and then P&O Nedlloyd, until eventually being taken over by Maersk.
In 2001, after 27 years of working for the company, I was made redundant, along with a great many of my colleagues in Sales, Operations and Commercial departments, as Maersk looked to save costs. It was a rather dark time.
However, it wasn’t long before I was working again, but with a big switch to Eastern European Road freight selling groupage freight services to and from Eastern Europe for Redheads – a trailer firm in Bradford. This was a very different culture and very aggressive – a difficult switch, but a great learning experience. During this time (as Sales and Business Development Executive), I visited MaruInternational in Manchester and met a certain Mr Kevin Fitzgerald. With Kevin’s help, between us we took a good chunk of Turkish sea freight business from P&O Maersk for the trailer company by using MaruInternational in Manchester.
Approximately one year later, Kevin Fitzgerald left Maru Intl. and started CBI Transportation UK Ltd. The Turkish business continued and another year later, in November 2003, I joined CBI Transportation UK Ltd to work with Kevin, Pete, Mike McGaughey and others.
And as they say the rest is history!
The 13 years with CBI have been the best way anyone could wish to finish their career. There certainly were ups and downs but that happens everywhere.
We would like to thank Malcolm Ellis (CBI) who has written the following article:

Employee Spotlight – Malcolm Ellis continued…It has been a most satisfying role, but being part of a small team, every single person had to pull their weight to make it all work or there wasn’t any money to pay the wages!!
The business continued to grow, volumes grew, markets expanded, road freight increased and the business moved forward.
Finally, we joined the JGS Group and with the benefit of Group rates, market reach, group services, the business continues to expand.
Working alongside the John Good Shipping team has been great fun and the spirit between all the staff from day one was and is super. It seems such a natural fit.
For all my colleagues in the business, this is a super environment and Company in which to work and expand one’s career. In times when head count is key and costs are being cut by so many companies and organisations, to have a Group that
is growing and yet retaining family–caring values and attitude to its employees is exceptional. It must be nurtured.
The doors are there to be opened on growing a career.
So I leave this role and now look to head full-‐on into so many new things that both Karen and I want to do. Travel, both abroad and at home, using our caravan and its freedom; improving my foreign languages; developing my music indifferent directions; getting fitter; enjoying our two wonderful granddaughters; gardening; socialising with friends and making yet more new friends; plus many other things yet to be discovered. I think Karen and I will both need 48hours in a day!!
I also hope that from time to time I can sneak back into the occasional social event you might have and keep up to date with everything that is happening and look forward to
buying you a drink. For me as a Yorkshire man, that is one hell of a promise!
So this was my career -‐ and my future hopes in a nutshell. In turn, may I wish all of you at CBI/John Goods, the very best of health, happiness and success in the future. It has been a pleasure to work with and for you these past 13 and 3 years and I thank you all most sincerely for that. As they say, onwards and upwards to pastures new.
Ladies and gentlemen. Thank you.
We all wish both Malcolm and Karen a long a happy retirement
