THE GIFT

OF PEACE “There arose no little dissension and debate.” Did that happen at work this week? Most of us can recall run-ins with coworkers, even with the boss. Did it happen while socializing with friends? Go easy on politics, religion . . . even sports. At home? Even the most peaceful household experiences a little “give and take” now and then. So where was it that “there arose no little dissension and debate”? That tumultuous conflict occurred among our first Christian ancestors, disrupting the community life of the early church. But today’s Acts of the Apostles shows how beautifully the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus in today’s Gospel, helped the church achieve a grace-filled resolution. What evolved was that “reconciled diversity,” often encouraged by Pope Francis and even envisioned in today’s Revelation passage; and a wondrous experience of Jesus’ promised Gospel gift: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” Copyright © J. May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you!

Life

Reflection

“Mary, patroness of America, renew in us a love for the beauty and sanctity of the human person from conception to natural death; and as your Son gave His life for us, help us to live our lives serving others. Mother of the Church, Mother of our Savior, open our hearts to the Gospel of life, protect our nation, and make us witnesses to the truth.” United States Conference of Catholic Bishops “Living the Gospel of Life”

Intercessions for Life For all Christians: That we may rejoice in the gift of our earthly life, and in the hope of eternal life with God; We pray to the Lord:

We are blessed and privileged to

be able to have Eucharistic Adoration

every First Friday of the month

from 10 am to 10 pm. We are thankful to those who devoutly commit an

hour with the Blessed Sacrament. Because several of our adorers have

moved, we are in need of parishioners who can commit an hour with the Lord.

We need at least two adorers for each hour.

Please know that everyone is welcome. It is very important that the Blessed Sacrament is not left alone even for

a short period of time. If for unexpected circumstances, you

couldn't come, please call Erika Nowak or Violy Rawson.

The next opportunity to spend some time before the Blessed Sacrament will

be First Friday, June 7, 2019

The Word In Our Lives

A Humble God

The second reading from Revelations gives us a picture of the new Jerusalem as a sign of the power and majesty of

God. Yet the other two readings seem to describe a humble God who wishes “not to place on you any burden beyond . . . necessity” (Acts 15:28), and Jesus in the Gospel tells his disciples that “the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name . . . will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you” (John 14:26). This gentleness reminds me of an icon by the Russian monk Andrei Rublev that depicts the Trinity as three angels bowing in deference to each other. This humility may be what moved Jesus to say that “the Father is greater than I” (John 14:28). It is certainly a unique way of understanding God. I used to think of free will as God’s way of testing our worthiness for the kingdom of heaven. But it is more likely part of that same humility, God not being forced on us. While we are given ways to know God, especially through the scriptures and the witness of those who went before us in faith, God leaves us free to believe or not, to love God or not. So does this mean God leaves us on our own to get through life? No, he gives us the Holy Spirit to teach and remind us of all that Jesus said. That “reminding” is an important way the Spirit helps us today. You may have spent years in religion classes or the RCIA process. When you need an answer to life’s questions, the Spirit may remind you of something you heard from a teacher or read in the scriptures. As you pray over that question, the Spirit may help you understand how the scripture applies to you. So the more you read the Bible, the more likely that the Spirit will have something of which to remind you. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
