Message from Monsignor René Mathieu
(1) This weekend, we resume Sundays in ordinary time. This
season is called ordinary because we count off the ordinal numbers
every week (second, third, fourth, etc). “It is a quiet period that
offers a breather between the intense celebrations of the mysteries
of the birth, death, and rising of Jesus Christ” (Paul Turner, Pasto-
ral Companion to the Roman Missal). The clergy wear green vest-
ments during ordinary time as a symbol of Christian hope. The season of Lent
will begin on March 5 with Ash Wednesday. (2) A new Catholic Church in
Maine: A Mass for the Dedication of the new St. Faustina Church in Jackman
was celebrated on Saturday, December 14. Stormy weather prevented Bishop
Malone from celebrating the Dedication Mass so the bishop delegated the re-
sponsibility to Fr. Kevin Martin, Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Jack-
man. Parishioners in Jackman were ready to celebrate after meeting and conquer-
ing countless challenges in recent years. In June 2010, the parish’s beloved statue
of Jesus, valued at $55,000, was dragged off its mount and across U.S. Route 201
by a vehicle, sustaining serious damage. The incident occurred just months after
deterioration and rising heating costs led to the parish’s decision to close and
demolish St. Anthony Church in Jackman. Parishioners have worshipped at the
American Legion Hall for four years. On November 26, the restored statue of
Jesus was placed in front of the new St. Faustina Church. As part of the Dedica-
tion Mass, the church’s altar was consecrated with sacred chrism, and Fr. Martin
walked to the 4 corners of the church and anointed the walls where 4 crosses with
vigil candles symbolized the call to “go forth and spread the Good News of the
Gospel to the 4 corners of the world.” Despite the storm outside, over 100 parish-
ioners participated in the Dedication Mass. (3) Online Giving System: Good
Shepherd Parish now has an online giving system called WeShare. The service
will allow you to see your donations at any time during the year and eliminates the
hassle of scrambling to write a check as you rush off to Mass. Make a weekly dona-
tion to recur each week and you’re done. For more information and to set up your
account, go to www.GoodShepherdParish.us and then click Online Giving. You
can make a onetime or recurring donation using your credit card, checking or
savings account. (4) Thank You of the Week: To the volunteers who stripped
the old floor covering in the Saint James School cafeteria to make room for re-
placement tiles. Thank you!
Jokes Priests Can Tell, Volume 3 by Msgr. Arthur Tonne:
A tourist was tooling down the highway pulling a good-sized trailer. A patrol
officer blinked him down to the side of the road. “Don’t you know the speed lim-it?” he growled.
The driver, with a look of innocence, answered: “Why, officer, I was going just
55 miles an hour.”
“That may be,” replied the law in a tone of sarcasm, “But your trailer was go-
ing 75 miles an hour.”
Vocations: "To you who have been consecrat-
ed in Christ Jesus and called to be a holy peo-
ple." Could it be that you or someone in your
family is being called to consider priesthood or
consecrated life? Call Fr. Nathan March at
(207) 773-6471.

The Study of the U.S. Catholic Catechism for
Adults with Deacon Bob, Thursdays, 7 pm,
downstairs at Most Holy Trinity: At our last
meeting we learned about the joint mission of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit from the Father, as
well as the gradual revelation of the Holy Spirit
in the Old Testament, the Gospels, and the Acts
of the Apostles. Join us this week as we seek to
understand how the Church is a holy mystery
originating within the Holy Trinity, whose mis-
sion is to be the Sacrament of Salvation, ful-
filling God's plan for sharing His divine life with
all people. Founded by Christ, revealed and em-
powered by the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, the
Church, in addition to being the Sacrament of
Salvation, is also the Mystical Body of Christ
which unites the visible and the spiritual aspects
of God's plan to bring His priestly, prophetic and
royal people into a loving communion with the
Holy Trinity in God's Kingdom. ―Copies of our
text are available.

Christmas Masses, I offer many thanks. Thank you for all the

generosity of Good Shepherd Parish which sponsors 4-5 meals
each month. Other generous sponsors are Saco & Biddeford Sav-
ings Institution, Biddeford Savings Bank, Union Church at Bid-
deford Pool, and American Medical Systems. With their help we
can continue to carry out Our Lord's work by offering delicious
meals to the needy in our community. To all these kind and gen-
erous people we want to say thank you and may God bless each
and every one. Have a Happy and Healthy 2014!

Forming a Chime Choir: For five Thursdays, January 23 to
February 27, we are inviting new members to try our chime
choir. We rehearse from 4 to 5 pm at Most Holy Trinity. Those
who cannot come during this rehearsal time are asked to express
their interest so we might create a second rehearsal possibility to
accommodate everyone. The goal is to learn several festive piec-
es which will be presented during the Easter season at 10:30
Sunday Mass and also at a few 4:00 Masses during the six weeks
of Easter time. Music reading skill is not required, but is helpful.
Call Jura at 207-468-5941 to add your name to our choir roster.
We need to have materials ready for each ringer before the re-
hearsal day. Help us to make a joyful noise to the Lord. This
activity is suitable for all ages, from middle schoolers to retirees.
