SCRIPTURE READINGS

First Reading: Acts 1:1‑11 This describes the Ascension of Jesus into heaven, and his promise to send the Holy Spirit to his disciples. Second Reading: Eph 1:17-23 Here Paul describes the meaning of the Ascension: God raised Jesus above all earthly powers, and made him Head of the Church and Lord of creation. Gospel: Mt 28:16-20 Jesus commissions the apostles to preach the Gospel to all nations, and promises to remain with them always.

COLLECTION BREAKDOWN: May 11th - May 18th:

Our thanks to all of our parishioners who respond each week to the needs of our parish and who make their weekly offering a part of their budget. May God bless you for your generosity.

Scripture reflection with Fr. Tim + Pause + Reflect + Act +

1) In the Acts of the Apostles, the disciples are shaken from their reverie by two men in white garments asking “Why are you standing there looking at the sky?” Where in your life do you feel God calling you from contemplation into action?

2) In his Letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul prays that his readers will be given a spirit of wisdom and revelation. Throughout your life, how has your understanding and knowledge of God grown or changed?

3) In the Gospel reading, despite all they have witnessed and experienced, the disciples “doubted”. How do you deal with doubt in the life of faith?

Thank you to all who continue through envelopes and online giving to support our parish. They are so appreciated. HOLY FATHER’S PRAYER INTENTION

Page 3: Good Shepherd R.C. Church · 2020-05-22 · MAY 24, 2020 ASCENSION OF THE LORD Saturday, May 23, 2020 5:00 PM For the People of the Parish “Ascension of the Lord” Sunday, May

The Paschal Mystery culminates in the Ascension of Jesus. After his appearance here on earth in his risen body, and “after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen” (Acts 1:2), Jesus “was lifted up and a cloud took him from their sight” (Acts1:9): Christ’s ascension marks the definitive entrance of Jesus’ humanity into God’s heavenly domain, whence he will come again (cf. Acts 1:11)...Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, precedes us into the Father’s glorious kingdom so that we, the members of his Body, may live in the hope of one day being with Him forever. Jesus Christ, having entered the sanctuary of heaven once and for all, intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

A Message from Fr. Tim March 24, 2020

Greetings and prayers: At this time, we await with joyful anticipation the Governor’s permission to open on a limited basis our parishes. We as a staff are also preparing for welcoming our RCIA candidates into the Church and celebrating the reception of the sacraments with our First Communicants and Confirmandi. We would like to thank you all for your diligent patience, understanding and fortitude. If there is anything we have learned during this pandemic, it is how useful both the Gifts and Fruits of the Spirits have helped us to persevere. We are grateful to all those who have reached out to us, provided food, sent letters, and contributed financially to enable the parish to pay our bills. I feel that through it all, we have grown and appreciated our faith family more. During this liturgical cycle, the period from Ascension to Pentecost, we have been allowed to be in a Novena mode, in anticipation of the renewal of our Church. Just as people have been able to recall where they were the day Pearl Harbor was attacked, the assassination of JFK, and September 11th, this pandemic will, as well, be a defining moment for us, our children, our country and our Church. What we have learned most through this experience is the presence of God and the Resurrection of Jesus in people. Peace, Fr. Tim

FAITH FORMATION NOTES

The Word of God This Week

Jesus Is Always With Us

Ascension of the Lord (Mt 26:16-20) Jesus said to His Apostles, “Go, tell everyone in the world about me so they will follow me as you have. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them all I’ve taught you.”

Family Corner

Faith Focus What does it take for us to follow Jesus, to be real disciples? A disciple is one who matches and listens and takes to heart what the Master is saying and doing. The key is to remember that we do not journey alone. Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will help us. Realizing that we disciples are all one family will help us to see Christ not only in those we know but in each human face encounter. (Pflaum)

The Ascension of Jesus after the Resurrection

"What did Jesus do after Easter?" and "Where is Jesus now?" The answer is that for forty days Jesus helped His disciples understand what had happened on Good Friday and Easter. Jesus also passed on to His disciples the responsibility to continue His work and minis-try. The apostles were to be Jesus' witnesses, and they were told to expect God to send the Holy Spirit to help them with the mission. So on the Ascension we celebrate what Jesus did and get ready to go to work as His witnesses and share His message today. (excerpted from Ministry to Children)

WE PRAY: “Jesus help us to go out to the world to spread your Good News. Amen”
