LITURGY OF THE WORD

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 2:14a, 36-41 Repent and be baptized.

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed: “Let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter and the other apostles, “What are we to do, my brothers?” Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call.” He testified with many other arguments, and was exhorting them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand persons were added that day.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose.

Near restful waters he leads me; he revives my soul. Refrain

He guides me along the right path, for the sake of his name. Though I should walk in the valley of the shadow of death,

no evil would I fear, for you are with me. Your crook and your staff will give me comfort. Refrain

You have prepared a table before me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil; my cup is overflowing. Refrain

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell for length of days unending. Refrain

I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep, and mine know me.

Setting: Mass in Honor of Mary, Mother of God, Donald Krubsack, b.1964 © 2010, Liturgical Press. All rights reserved. Used with permission under OneLicense.net A-704048.

A reading from the First Letter of Saint Peter 2:20b-25 Christ suffered for you.

Beloved: If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps. He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.

When he was insulted, he returned no insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten; instead, he handed himself over to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you had gone astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 10:1-10 I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep.

The Gospel Acclamation is repeated after the Gospel.

Jesus said:“Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs

over elsewhere is a thief and a robber. But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.” Although Jesus used this figure of speech, the Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them.

So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Spiritual Communion

My Jesus,I believe that you are truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament.I love You above all things and I desire to possess You within my soul.Since I am unable at this moment to receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as being already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

-Saint Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787)

Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) described Spiritual Communion as an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament and

lovingly embrace him at a time or in circumstances when we cannot receive him in Sacramental Communion.
