Clearly, she’s one of the most popular personalites to ever hail from this region, and now she’ll appear here live: TheresaCaputo star of “The Long Island Medium”on TLC, will headline during an unprece-dented four nights on October 18, 19, 20,

and 21 at The NYCB Theatre in Westbury. Ticketsare now on sale, and are available viaTicketmaster.com, charge by phone at (800) 745-3000 or at the Westbury box office. For moreinformation, visit thetheatreatwestbury.com. We’dmake plans at soon as possible, and it’s becoming clear this is a true event – and likely tosell out all four appearances.

In addition to her longstanding fame as one ofthe most turned-to “mediums” in the UnitedStates, Caputo is also now a best-selling author. Her new book, There’s More To Life Than This, isriding high on the Amazon best-seller charts; atpress time, the book ranked at #1 in severalbook categories, including Religion & Spirituality:

Religious Studies, Theology; Religion &Spirituality, Spirituality, Angels; and Religion &Spirituality, New Age/Channeling. The book alsohas been a New York Times bestseller as well.

So what’s causing all the excitement? It’s clearthat Caputo, a one-of-a-kind personality, hasstruck a chord with the American public like few

people in her profession ever have. From herpublisher:

“Theresa Captuo, funny, frank, and down toearth, began communicating with Spirit at the ageof four, but she didn’t fully accept her gift until shewas 33 years old. She had a good life as a busywife and mom, but she also suffered from chronicanxiety that, as it turned out, came from ignoringher abilities. Once Theresa began channeling, she realized that she felt much better after delivering a message from Spirit and releasingthat energy. Since then she’s used her extraordinary gift to help people heal from theloss of their loved ones.

“Theresa feels that it’s her purpose to make usall aware that there is more to life than what wesee here in the physical world and that yourdeceased loved ones are safe and at peace andassisting you from The Other Side. There’s Moreto Life Than This explains how Theresa’s medi-umship works, what happens to your soul whenyou die, what Heaven is like, what the deceasedwant you to know, and the many roles that yourfamily, friends, angels, guides, and God play hereand in the afterlife. It also explores how to safelyconnect with Spirit, so that you can recognizewhen your loved ones are reaching out. ThroughTheresa’s personal story, compelling anecdotes, and fascinating client readings, she teaches usabout Spirit and helps us to understand andappreciate the important lessons and touchingmessages that we’re meant to embrace everyday.”

Caputo was born and raised in Hicksville. Herfamily members – also favorites from theirappearances on her TV show – are her husband,Larry, grown children Larry and Victoria, herbrother, Michael, and her parents. Even her pets(dogs Petey and Louie) have earned their fairshare of human fans.

The Midtown Men

They lived hard, died young (Billie Holiday at44, Janis Joplin at 27 from a heroin over-dose) after battling drug and alcohol

addiction, and sang of heartache and relation-ships gone bad – they sang the blues. Now, theselegends have been brought back to life, both off-Broadway in “Lady Day,” and on Broadway in “ANight With Janis Joplin,” bio musicals that recreate the singers’ most famous numbers insemi-concert settings. Both shows are blessedwith exceptionally talented performers – Dee DeeBridgewater and Mary Bridget Davies, channelingHoliday and Joplin – but their faithful interpreta-tions of the Holiday songbook and the Joplincanon are undermined by mediocre books thatdon’t serve them or their shows well.

Bridgewater, a three-time Grammy winner(most recently in 2010 for her Billie Holiday tributealbum) who also won a Tony for “The Wiz,” hasbeen committed to this work since the mid-1980swhen she starred in an earlier incarnation inLondon, and she has the vocal and acting chopsto channel Holiday brilliantly. “Lady Day” is basedon a concert Holiday gave in London inNovember 1954 at the end of a European tour. Arun-in with the law resulted in the suspension ofher cabaret license in the States, and Holiday had

been in involuntary exile, performing throughoutEurope. The first act opens with her four-mancombo (led by musical director Bill Jolly) vamping and complaining about the jazz legendwho is hours late for their rehearsal. When shearrives, offering far-fetched excuses, they runthrough thrillingrenditions of suchclassics as “AFoggy Day (inLondon Town),”“Miss Brown ToYou,” and “Strange

Fruit.” While notsounding exactlylike Holiday,Bridgewater captures her vocalstylings, timbre, andaching melancholy.Unfortunately, inbetween the marvelously performed songs,author/directorStephen Stahl saddles Bridgewater with clumsily written flashbacks as Holiday reminisces about herunhappy childhood and feelings of abandonmentby her mother. And Bridgewater must reenact (in a child’s voice) Holiday’s horrific rape at theage of 10, as well as her initiation into heroin use.

The second act recreates the actual concertas a progressively drunken Holiday – in a gorgeous white gown and furs – rambles onabout her troubles and attacks the audience inbetween delivering smashing renditions of “GodBless The Child,” “Good Morning Heartache,”“Ain’t Nobody’s Business, and “I Can’t Get

Started.” David Ayers and Rafael Poueriet havethankless roles as Holiday’s patient manager and assistant stage manager.

“A Night With Janis Joplin,” written and directed by Randy Johnson, delivers just what the title promises – another Baby Boomer tribute

show – this time for diehard fans of the late psychedelic blues-rock icon. The inexhaustibleMary Bridget Davies, an explosivedynamo who has been touring thecountry with this show and starred inthe earlier bio-musical “Love, Janis,”brings the house down channelingJoplin’s distinctive hoarse wail andemphatic body language. Too bad theconcert is interrupted by sanitized(and drug-free) confessional ramblings about Joplin’s middle-classchildhood and family life in Port Arthur,Texas, and her need to sing the bluesto honor and emulate the singers whoinspired her.

To give the hard-driving Davies arespite, some of her inspirations –Bessie Smith (portrayed by Taprena

Michelle Augustine), Etta James (NikkiKimbrough), Aretha Franklin (Allison Blackwell),Nina Simone, and Odetta (De’Adre Aziza) – perform their signature songs. This gifted quartetalso backs up Davies as The Joplinaires. In hippybell-bottoms and psychedelic flowing tops (spot-on costumes by Amy Clark), on a concert stagecirca 1970, the wild-haired Davies gives full-throttled performances of Joplin hits “Down OnMe,” “Piece Of My Heart,” “Spirit In The Dark” (arousing duet with Blackwell’s Aretha Franklin),“Cry Baby,” and “Me And Bobby McGee.”– Jane Klain

Geared toward Christmaslovers and Scrooges alike, the"Holiday Sing-Along" grew out ofthe Christmas gatherings Owenand Shearer (“The Simpsons,”Spinal Tap, “Saturday Night Live”)hosted around their family piano, and the tour continues to reflectthe same intimate, anything-goesspirit. The show is divided into twoacts; the first features performances by Owen, Shearer, and their cast of guests, each ofwhom picks two holiday songs oftheir choice – selections rangefrom sentimental ("WinterWonderland," "Have Yourself AMerry Little Christmas") to irreverent ("F&*k Christmas,""Jesus Was a Dreidel Spinner").

Each year, Shearerwrites a new satiricalsong (last year's:"Why No Bail-Out forSanta?") and oftenperforms the SpinalTap classic"Christmas With TheDevil." As guests finish their songs, they remain on thestage (which Owendecorates as a cozy,Christmas time livingroom), steadily building the festivemood.

The second act isan audience sing-along ofAmerican classics, rounds, and carols, with Owen providingspecially designedsongbooks. For thecrowd favorite "TheTwelve Days OfChristmas," Owen

divides the audience into 12groups and awards kitschy holidaygifts to the best performers.

TThhoorr:: TThhee DDaarrkk WWoorrllddStarring Chris Hemsworth, NataliePortman, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Kat DenningsDirected by Alan TaylorWalt Disney Pictures

We thought it, too: Our first thought after looking at the fine actor playing Thor, ChrisHemsworth, was probably what a lot of peoplethought – at least if they were raised on the 1960sThor cartoons: “Shouldn't he be a lot bigger – andwhere's the helmet?” Okay, old timers, put thoseworries to rest; after two pictures, it's safe to saythat the Thor franchise of the entire Marvel universe of movies might be the best of them all,as they're certainly the best-acted.

Our first questions with all these superherofilms, from Thor to Green Lantern remain: Is it trueto the original comic book? Despite the violenceinherent in comics, does the film manage to not goover the line, and does it detail what’s right andwrong? Thankfully, this film is a resounding yes tothose questions.

Thor: The Dark World manages to be both afollow-up to not only the 2011 Thor film, but to lastyear's Marvel's The Avengers as well. This time, the super villain Malekith, the leader of some quitenasty elves, has plans to rearrange the universeto his own liking. Now, it's up to Thor and, believeit or not, Loki – yeah, the head case villian andbrother of Thor from the two aforementioned films– to conquer the evildoers and save not only theearth, but their high-in-the-sky homeland ofAsgard.

Dumb stuff, of course, but fun dumb.

Hemsworth is quite unlike the orignal comic bookThor – he's capable of coming up with a smart, funny line, something the tight-assed original Thornever once did – and Tom Hiddleston's quirky Lokimight be the best character of any of the Marvelfilms to date. A nice addition is the radiant NataliePortman as Thor's love interest, Jane Foster, whomanages to not be the usual sort of whiny, help-less girlfriend character that's usually in the comicbooks – in fact, Portman's Jane Foster andGwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts in the Iron Manfilms are smart, brave, independent women, quiteunlike their original 1960s characters.

The short but sweet synopsis: The specialeffects are wonderful (although the entire film hasthe usual dark pallor that affects so many GCI-laden productions); the characters are attractiveand fun; and there's so much BAM! POW! BOOM!that it becomes almost dizzying. The best part isthat you'll feel like you got your $11 worth uponleaving the theater. In 2013, comic book films andanimated features are the highest quality moviesyou'll find in any mallplex. And unlike the 1960s,they beat the tar out of junk like the movie versionof TV’s Batman and Alakazam The Great any day.– Cody Bell

It was hard not tochuckle when the storyabout the New YorkMets’ “secret” dinnerwith Robinson Canoand his managementteam came to light.

It’s obvious that the Metscannot afford Cano, and Ihad doubts that they couldeven afford to take hisreps out to a decentrestaurant. The scuttlebuttis that CAA, led by frontman Jay-Z, actuallybought the Mets dinner.Score one for Jeff Wilpon.

The Mets once againdiplayed their penny-pinching ways when theydecided not to match theColorado Rockies’ $2.5million offer to retain freeagent relief pitcher LaTroyHawkins. This had to have been demoralizing newsfor Mets fans, considering the fine job that Hawkinsdid last year. It’s not as if the Mets’ bullpen is full ofpotential setup men and closers. One former Metsexecutive told me that he couldn’t believe that theywouldn’t pony up what is chump change by MLBstandards to keep a guy who not only performedwell, but was a mentor in the clubhouse to youngplayers, was one of the rare leaders on a Metsteam bereft of leadership, and a go-to guy forsportswriters.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of MajorLeague Baseball Players Association executive

director MichaelWeiner, who succumbed to braincancer at the age of51. I frequently ran intoMichael on the #7 trainon the way to Citi Field, where he would meetwith both Mets playersand those on the visiting team. It wasindicative of the down-to-earth man thathe was that heeschewed a limo infavor of using the subway. He also valuedthe opinions of those ofus from smaller mediaoutlets as much as hedid those who werefrom major publicationsand networks. One ofWeiner’s last acts was

helping arguably the most famous member of hisrank-and-file, Alex Rodriguez, prepare his defenseagainst a 211-game suspension by MLBCommissioner Bud Selig.

Former Atlanta Braves outfielder and Falconsdefensive back Brian Jordan was one of the luminaries at the annual Major League BaseballPlayers Alumni Association event that raises fundsfor youth baseball clinics. Having played two professional sports, Jordan certainly has a uniquevantage point to comment on the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin hazing process. “I was ina lot of clubhouses and locker rooms, and I never

saw or heard anything like that. If Incognito canprove that he was encouraged ‘to toughen up’Martin by Miami Dolphins management expect lawsuits to fly,” said Jordan.

New York Knicks forward Metta World Peace –still better known to mostof us as Long Island Citynative Ron Artest – was inchatty mood before thePacers-Knicks game atthe Garden two weeksago. Artest has been battling knee problems, and at this point in hiscareer is taking more timeto recover from the various aches and painsthat come along with lifein the NBA than he usedto. “I always rushed backtoo soon after getting hurtwhen I was younger. It’shard to be smart but Ihave to try now that I amolder,” he said to themedia assembled in theKnicks locker room.

Metta also said that he enjoyed his staged subwayride on the F train recently as he traveled from hischildhood home in Queensbridge to MadisonSquare Garden. “I remember when the 21st Streetopened. I was 13 years old. By the way, do the Gand R trains still run in Queens?” he asked.

The Knicks’ slow start enraged Madison SquareGarden Entertainment/Cablevision CEO JamesDolan to the point where, in the ultimate form ofanger misplacement, he benched The Knicks City

Dancers for a game. Former Knicks general manager Donnie Walsh, who came from theIndiana Pacers and is now back with them aftercountless run-ins with Dolan, told me that he had

heard about the incident. “I have no comment,”he said with a hearty laugh as he shook hishead in disbelief.

Sapphire, a gentlemen’s club on the UpperEast Side located just across the Ed Koch(Queensboro) Bridge, had some fun with thepredicament of The Knicks City Dancers bysending out an email showing one of their lovelydancers wearing a skimpy KCD-like outfit thatproclaimed: “Dolan can’t fire our girls!”

It was a nice touch on the part of the MSGNetwork to have Walt “Clyde” Frazier return tohis native Atlanta and revisit his childhood homeand friends for its “Beginnings” series. What isfrequently forgotten is that Clyde was the firstNBA player to score an athletic shoe endorsement deal. “A new company, Puma, paid me $5,000 to wear their suedesneakers, and I felt that I was on topof the world,” Frazier told me at hisManhattan restaurant, ClydeFrazier’s Wine And Dine. Puma isspending a lot of money reviving itsClassic Suede line, and is hopingthat it can have the same luck thatConverse has had with relaunchingits Chuck Taylor All-Star shoes.Puma would be smart to use Frazieras a spokesman the way thatSkechers is using NFL legendaryQB Joe Montana to promote itsRelaxed Fit shoes as a way ofappealing to an older demographic. The Squared Circle (Gotham

Books) by Daniel Shoemaker is themost erudite book that I have ever read

about one of my favorite passions; the world of professional wrestling. The author goes into greatdetail about how wrestling played up ethnic stereotypes to attract and enrage fans right upthrough the late 1980s, yet it was an endeavor that attracted a lot of minority athletes such asBobo Brazil, Ernie Ladd, and Pedro Morales. While Shoemaker spends a lot of pages discussing WWE superstars Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, he does not ignore lesser grapplers such as S.D. Jones, whose job was to lose (and he did that well), as well as one of my all-time favorites, “Ravishing” Rick Rude,” whom Shoemaker describes as “a preening narcissist in the ring.”

Bryan Adams, who ranks with Rush, BurtonCummings, Randy Bachman, and NeilYoung among the most successful rockperformers ever to hail from Canada, willmake a rare area appearance as hebrings his “Bare Bones” tour to Tilles

Center for the Performing Arts on the campus ofLIU Post in Brookville on Thursday, December 12at 8 pm. Tickets are at ticketmaster.com.

Adams is currently on the road with his “BareBones” tour in support of his new CD, BryanAdams – Bare Bones. The 20-cut disc wasreleased on November 16 in the U.S. andCanada. Recorded on the road in the spring ofthis year, Bare Bones came about in response tofans requesting a CD of the songs they’d justheard – stripped down, raw, unplugged – the waythey had originally been created. The resultingCD is a window into the sold-out highly acclaimedtour that Bryan has interspersed with full bandstadium dates over the past few years.

The Grammy and Juno award-winning singer-songwriter has spent the last three decades mak-ing music history. He has sold more than 65 mil-lion albums worldwide, toured six continents, gar-nered 21 top 10 hits, earned nominations forthree Academy Awards and five Golden Globes, received 18 Juno Awards, an American MusicAward, and five ASCAP Film and Television MusicAwards for Most Performed Song from a MotionPicture (his music has appeared on more than 40

movie soundtracks).Adams was recently honoured to perform at the

opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics inVancouver, performing a duet with Nelly Furtado. This past spring he was the recipient of the AllanWaters Humanitarian Award at the Juno Award’sceremony and a week later in Ottawa he receivedthe Governor General's Performing Arts Award forLifetime Artistic Achievement. Bryan also con-tributed the feature song, "You've Been A FriendTo Me," in the John Travolta film, Old Dogs.

Adams has been awarded the Order of BritishColumbia and is a Companion of the Order ofCanada; he has received an award for “Artist ofthe Decade” and has been inducted into the Juno

Hall of Fame. He has a star on Canada’s Walk ofFame and added his handprint to the WembleySquare of Fame in celebration of his 25th show atthe famed stadium. He was given a star on theHollywood Walk of Fame and that ceremony thattook place in 2011.

Adams’ live performances have benefited HisRoyal Highness the Prince of Wales Prince’sTrust, Live Aid, Live 8, The Concert for Freedomfor Nelson Mandela, Greenpeace, AmnestyInternational, Net Aid, The Canadian AvalancheFoundation, and Breast Cancer, as well as cam-paigns that have saved the rainforests, providedfood and comfort for the needy and created whalesanctuaries. Through his namesake foundation hehas also helped build schools in areas ofSoutheast Asia, devastated by the tsunami in2004.

Adams is also an acclaimed photographer, donating fees from his photography to his name-sake foundation that funds projects supporting theelderly, victims of wars and natural disasters andother disadvantaged individuals. He also has sev-eral photographic books to his name includingMade in Canada, Haven (UK) and AmericanWomen, the latter done in conjunction with CalvinKlein. Proceeds were in aid of breast cancerresearch. Adams was among a select group ofphotographers invited to photograph Her Majesty,Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her RoyalJubilee. That photograph was used a year lateron a Canadian postage stamp. In 2009, Bryanwas amongst a select group of notable Canadianswhose face also graced a Canadian stamp.

Adams has released more than 60 singles overthe course of his career to date, including:“Heave” “Straight From The Heart,” “Cuts Like AKnife,” “Summer Of 69,” “It’s Only Love” (with TinaTurner), “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You,” “Can’tStop This Thing We Started,” and more.

Quick Snacks:Bites From Here & There

Fast food, quick observations:Don't you wish Ralph's FamousItalian Ices stayed open

year-round?Burger King's “new” Big King

double burger – an obvious attempt atcompeting with you-know-who's you-know-what – is as lame a concept as anything we've ever tried. When we ordered ours, the doltbehind the counter actually asked“Double Stacker?” which pretty muchtells you the “new” burger is just anolder one with a new name. BurgerKing trying to compete withMcDonald's is watching a fly soaringstraight into a plate-glass window; youonly wonder why it can't know anybetter.

That being noted: Eating atMcDonald's isn't nearly as much theenjoyable mindless Americana as itused to be, considering recent reportsthat some full-time employees of the chain can't live onwhat little money they earn. It's timefor this corporate giant to wake upand smell the nuggets, because themore the public learns, the faster itwill be to react … by eating elsewhere.

Besides, in an era with ShakeShack, Five Guys, and so many other

quality burger joints, the heat is on,and not only in terms of taste.

Back to BK: Can the franchise onOld Country Road in Westbury be anyslower in getting customers served?Don’t go there during your lunchbreak – you’ll be lucky to get out by

dinner time. We'll note it again: The “chicken”

at the Nathan's complex on OldCountry Road in Westbury is a miracle – we thought we'd tasted thelast of our drive-in movie style crap, but their “wings” and “tenders” areincredible: Dry, tasteless, cold, greasygarbage right out of the 1960s.

That being noted: Goofing aroundin the adjacent old-timey arcade is stilla blast.

If you haven't tried the chickenwings at Anthony's Coal-Fired Pizza(Commack, Bohemia, Great Neck,Woodbury, Carle Place, Wantagh),

you're missing out on a rare,one-of-kind treat.

If you've tried the chicken wings atKFC (everywhere), may we also suggest Premiere Care, withwalk-in medical locations at 11 spotsin Long Island (and three more on theway). You might need them once thedigestive process begins.

If there's anything cooler than thantables at Shake Shack being madefrom actual former bowling lanes, wehave yet to experience it.

Every time we eat barbecue atFamous Dave's, we wonder if all theold hunting signs are really old hunting signs or just new signs thatare made to look like old signs.

Watching senior citizens try to workthe new-age Coca-Cola self-servemachines at Burger King andPopeye's is just like … well, watchingsenior citizens try to figure out thenew scanner voting machines. OrMuni Meter parking meters. Or 2012-style washing machines. Or ...

We don't know who enjoys them –someone certainly must – but bothCoke Zero and Pepsi Max taste likecoal tar.

One of the best things about LongBeach is Swingbelly's BeachsideBarbecue, which celebrated its “sixth and seventh”anniversaries on November 14 (asthey put it, “that B*tch Sandy ruinedPorkchop’s birthday party last year”).

If the burgers at Beachtree Cafe inEast Islip continue like this, they maysoon be under consideration for thebest anywhere in Long Island – andyou should try them as soon as possible. And if you’re out bowling, you must try the burgers atWoodmere Lanes – they’re so delicious it doesn’t seem possible.

He was off the scene for a long time, but it’sclear that no one in the music world has forgottenthe one-of-a-kind rap superstar Eminem. TheMarshall Mathers LP 2, the new album from thispop music icon, recently ranked as the best-selling album in the U.S., debuting a top theBillboard 200 albums chart and selling 792,000copies its first week of release (the second largestsales-week of the year). In addition, The MarshallMathers LP 2 and single, "The Monster," featuringRihanna, are currently #1 on the iTunes Albumand Singles charts respectively. Fueled by thesuccess of The Marshall Mathers LP 2, all eight ofEminem's previously released albums underAftermath/Interscope have reentered the BillboardTop 200 chart, the type of feat not seen oftensince the heydays of The Beatles and MichaelJackson.

In addition, Eminem has become the first leadartist (as opposed to a featured artist) in nearly 50years to have four songs appear on the

Billboard's Hot 100's Top 20, which has not been achieved since The Beatles did it back in May 1964.

On November 2, Eminem appeared on NBC’slong-running variety show “Saturday Night Live,”performing "Berzerk" (with surprise guest RickRubin deejaying), as well as "Survival," which featured the red hot newcomer Skylar Grey joining him on vocals. The next day, Eminem performed a jaw-dropping live version of "RapGod," the song that features more than six min-utes of his dizzying rapid-fire mic skills, at The

YouTube Music Awards. OnNovember 4, he sat down for a"Town Hall" question-and-answersession that aired on albumrelease day on his Shade 45 radiostation, which is broadcast onSiriusXM satellite radio. On theNovember 6, BET aired a specialRap City: Eminem 360 programcomprised of an interview andfreestyle session with Eminem, who was also joined by ShadyRecords' artist Slaughterhouse. And more recently, Eminemappeared on MTV's EuropeanMusic Awards, where he was presented with the Global IconAward for his lifetime achievementas well as taking home the awardfor Best Hip-Hop.

Executive produced by a pairof music industry legends in Dr.Dre and Rick Rubin, The MarshallMathers LP 2 has earned ravereviews. The Marshall Mathers LP2 is Eminem's seventh full-lengthrelease for Aftermath Interscope, following 2010's Recovery, whichsold more than 7.2 million copiesand spawned the worldwide hits"Not Afraid" and "Love The WayYou Lie" – making it the firstalbum in the U.S. to ever go platinum digitally. Eminem hassold more than 80 million albumsworldwide. Pop trends come andgo, but it’s clear that the skills ofEminem haven’t faded in the least – nor have his millions of fans.

“Comedy Central Roast of James Franco.” Hevoiced the character of Stu on HBO’s “The Lifef &Times Of Tim,” and has had memorable gueststarring roles on “Reno 911,” “New Girl,” “ParksAnd Recreation,” “Community,” and “Children’sHospital.” He’s also had roles in the featuresfilms Get Him To The Greek, Date Night, and ILove You Man that “people sort of remember,” hisself-effacing bio states.

Even his website at nickkroll.com is wacky. He

introduces himself thusly: “Hello, as youmight have guessed from the shelf –my name is Nick Kroll. I am an actor-comedian-writer-producer. A couplethings I would like you to know aboutme: I have a sketch show called ‘KrollShow’ returning to Comedy Central inJanuary 2014, and I play ‘Ruxin’ on theFX series ‘The League.’ I also haveother TV and film credits that I findways to casually mention in polite conversation. Thanks for visiting mywebsite. One last thing I'd like you toknow about me is that I like Take 5candy bars because they have pretzelsinside.”

The RidesCan't Get Enough429 Records

Much has been made of the formation of this new blues“supergroup” and the news it has made in the genre in thescant few months that its been on the scene – but the factof the matter is that this simply is the productof three immensely talented friends who madea rocking, loose album simply because theywanted to. Plainly put, Stephen Stills hasn'tsounded this good (particularly vocally) inyears. His reading of “Don't Want Lies”features some shockingly emotive singing, andhis raw guitar playing stands up well next tothe flashier and younger Kenny WayneShepherd, who manages to make some blueschestnuts (“Honey Bee,” “Talk To Me Baby”)sound fresh. Add to it all the old-timey

keyboard skills of BarryGoldberg, and this ranksas one of those rarealbums that's both traditional yet modern –and for guitar fans, it'ssheer nirvana. Note: Theversion of this album soldthrough Best Buy containsthree bonus tracks, andit's worth seeking out forthe searing instrumental,“High Voltage.”– Bob Smith

Katy PerryPrismCapitol

One can accuse Katy Perry of being lightweight, but sheobviously wouldn't have it any other way. Her bent for concentrating on catchy hit singles has already propelled herinto the all-timem upper stratosphere in terms of recordsales (her last album contained that rarest of feats, four consecutive #1's), and this new effort seems to be on the

same path – “Roar” already shot tothe top spot on the charts, as did thisalbum upon its release. Amazingly,Perry seems to be toning things downwhile others (the always naked MileyCyrus and Lady Gaga, to name two)always ratchet up the sex quotient.Wonder of wonders, Perry's more serious “Unconditionally” sounds likea mega-hit, but so do the silly “This IsHow We Do” and “InternationalSmile.” Perry might be the current

queen of pop, but she's also the queen offun as well.– Bob Smith

Paul McCartneyNewHere Music

“Macca” certainly has nothing to prove, and he still looks and sounds quite spry at71. The appropriately titled New is notgoing to make anyone forget Band On theRun, but “Queenie Eye,” “Save Us,” and thetitle track prove that McCartney is not tooold to rock out. While this is notMcCartney’s best album, it is also far fromhis worst – he can't be accused of coastingon his name. – Lloyd Carroll

Elton JohnThe Diving BoardCapitol

John and lyricistBernie Taupin remainprolific on this 15-track effort. The pairare in a reflectivemood as they areconcerned aboutbeing isolated as they age (“Can’t Stay Alone Tonight”), andoffer melancholy looks at their pasts (“A Town CalledJubilee,” “Home Again”). The highlight is “Take This DirtyWater,” in which John uses a gospel chorus singing behind amelody that's akin to 1971's “Country Comfort.” Longtimefans won't be disappointed.– Lloyd Carroll

Cancellations and schedule changes alwaysseem to cause controversy on TV – even in theboonies. For years, a polka dance programcalled “The Big Joe Show” ranked as one of themost popular on the RFD TV syndicated network(which formerly ran Don Imus' weekday morningsimulcasts before the program was picked up bythe Fox Business Network). “Big” Joe – betterknown as Joe Siedlik – has starred on his owntraveling polka music program for years, usuallyfeaturing a different band on each program, along with dozens of area polka

dancers spinning around hugedance floors in armorys and VFWhalls. The show is utterly quaintand has a huge following in ruralareas, but what was described inpress accounts as simply “a disagreement” a couple of yearsback forced Joe from RFD-TV.However, the always enterprising“Big Joe” is now offering morethan 150 of his programs on asubscription basis on his new “BigJoe Family Shows” streaming network, available on Roku andother streaming devices. “Big” Joeis also hoping to put his showback on the road as soon as possible. This is the beauty of thedigital age: Nothing ever has to beout of print, and nothing ever isreally cancelled if you don't want itto be. Even an enterprise such as

“Big” Joe's polka hours – as rudimentary a program as you'll find – can stayaround and perhaps even gain in popularity. The venerable Siedlik is now 79but an energetic ball of fun; long may he polka … Beck Bennett – so funnyonline and in his commericals with kids for AT&T – is slowly starting to showhis comic mettle as he’s gradually being given more to do on “Saturday Night

Live”; his slow, sure ascention feels a lot likeBill Murray’s first season (few remember thatMurray barely made a blip upon his debut ashe replaced Chevy Chase). Bennett is a surebet for bigger and better things in the future… Speaking of the 1970s, the EPIX cablenetwork recently aired Filthy Gorgeous, a documentary on Penthouse Magazinefounder and publisher Bob Guccione, whosework in the men's sophisticate genre (okay,

nudie magazines) will likely never be topped. The film reveals Guccione as amulti-faceted individual who was not only a lover of photography but of filmand fine art as well … It surprised virtually no one when NBC canceled a badidea gone wrong (a new version of “Ironside” featuring Blair Underwood) anda lame new comedy series, “Welcome To The Family.” In the latter's case, it'sthe most unimaginative title the network could have thought of, way too closeto “Modern Family,” “Family Ties,” you name it … No question about it: Theupcoming December 5 NBC production of “The Sound Of Music” with CarrieUnderwood, Laura Benanti, and Audra McDonald is the exact opposite – aquality family event with a truly outstanding cast. Underwood, in particular, may change her entire careerin one night, as she's clearly destined for Broadway greatness ...David Diamante, the PA announcer forBrooklyn Nets games at BarclaysCenter, is utterly bush league. Bestknown for his boxing ring announcing,Diamante orgasmically shreiks outNets’ baskets like John Sterling onsteroids, but makes barely audible, dull, sullen calls when the opposing teamdares to score. However, in a sportsera when Mike Francesa lobs softballsat a grandstanding Alex Rodriguez, what more can we expect? It’s all show, not substance, and more of the dumbing down of pro sports culture.

Chrome Orange: There's a newJimi LaLumia single on the way, aturbo-charged dance version of a1960s garage rock classic, which isall I can reveal right now, but I amhaving the time of my life recordingin the Chrome Orange Studio inSuffolk County with industry vetsMark Gaide and his wife, SudanFaber Gaide. It’s the first time I'vehad the chance to actually partici-pate in the actual construction of a

track, pouring over every sound andevery aspect. The Dr.Jekyll/Mr.Hydeexperiment continues, with dancetracks being released as a solo, andfuture rock projects still to be billedas The Psychotic Frogs. Hey, itkeeps me off the streets and out oftrouble.

Glam Box: I can never getenough of the U.K. 70s glam tracksthat never got their fair day in courtin America – and just in time for theholidays,Universal Records UK hasissued a five-CD set with a deluxe100-page booklet, Oh Yes We CanLove: A History Of Glam Rock. It'sexpensive, but it was myThanksgiving present to myself(about $90 including shipping viaAmazon, being a British import andall that). The early days of the glitterstyle and sound are represented byChuck Berry, Little Richard, and Noel Coward!

By the time we get to Disc Five,we are deep into Hanoi Rocks, TheSisters Of Mercy, Goldfrapp, andDead Or Alive; along the way, ofcourse, there's T. Rex, Bowie, MottThe Hoople, Suzi Quatro, Roxy, Lou Reed, Slade, MainMan’s DanaGillespie and Mick Ronson, andeven Lulu's take on "The Man WhoSold The World."

How could I resist? I couldn't. Ifyou were a brave U.S.-based glamwarrior in the early part of the1970s, I don't think that you'll beable to resist this either. Ask someone to get it for you for the holidays if all else fails, and enjoy.

Still Going Gaga: It's a Lady

Gaga world. Her new CD, Artpop, was the #1 album in the country asof this writing; her “Saturday NightLive” appearance, as both hostessand musical guest, was breathtaking; she revived R. Kelly bybringing him on “SNL” to perform"Do What You Want," which he isfeatured on; she will be the last performer to appear at the legendary Roseland Ballroom, whichis about to close forever; she has

booked her way onto one ofthose “space flights” for some-time in the near future and willperform one of her singlesfrom the space capsule (no,I'm not making this up); andshe co-hosted a MuppetsThanksgiving special. I mean, girl, come up for air! She was,and remains, the ultimate starof our day and age.

Kiss & Tell: For the Kissfan, the book to own is Nothin’To Lose: The Making Of Kiss(1972-1975) by Ken Sharp –

and no, not just because I'm in it.This starts from the very beginningof the band and leaves nothing out,and still has the approval of PaulStanley and Gene Simmons – notan easy feat. So congratulations arein order for Sharp, who had originally interviewed me about theQueens rock club Coventry, a glitter glam bastion in the early 70s, and used my quote for thisbook instead (some of you mayremember Coventry, where Kissplayed alongside such genre icons

Wayne County and JohnnyThunders & The Heartbreakers, whodebuted there right after Thundersand Jerry Nolan had split from TheNew York Dolls).

Leslie West: Still Climbing UpwardLegendary former Mountain guitaristLeslie West chose to re-track the classic song "Long Red" for hisOctober 29 solo release Still Climbing. His motive was to reclaim as his ownone of the most sampled rock tracksin the history of hip hop.

Originally released on Mountain'sself-titled album (1969), the song hasfound a renewed relevance with consistent usage year after year onplatinum recordings. Some of theartists who have sampled the trackinclude Jay-Z on 2003's The BlackAlbum with "99 Problems," De LaSoul with 2004's The Grind Date with"Verbal Clap," The Game's 2006album Doctor's Advocate with"Wouldn't Get Far,"and 2007's FindingForever fromCommon with "ThePeople."
