Thanks to All for Clothes Closet
Donations!
Thanks to you, we have a room full of clothes for our needy teens! Thank you so
much for your clothing and monetary donations. Students are already wearing some
of their newly acquired wardrobes, which came just in time for the colder weather.
Please remember us when you clean out closets!
Thefts
I would love to say that no TLH student would steal, but that is just not the case.
Schools are simply a microcosm of the society outside their walls, and such is the case
with thieves. Most of our thefts occur in the gym area, and most occur because
students do not secure their items in “locked” lockers. Though students have lockers
and are required to have locks for them, they will often simply place a bag down,
unsecured, and leave it in the locker room. My first question to them is always, “Did
you have it locked in your locker?” Ninety-nine percent of the time the answer is,
“No.”
Please talk with your teens about locking their valuables in their lockers. There are
instances when we can look at the images on our camera system, and we have been
able to catch some thieves this way. However, we cannot have cameras in areas
where students dress and undress. The items that thieves most often look for are
IPods, IPads, cell phones, other electronic devices, and, of course, money. Students
should not bring large sums of money to school with them. We do punish harshly
when we find the culprits.
Advice From College Board https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/get-in/your-high-school-record
1. When you apply to college, admission officers look at more than just your grades —
they also take note of what you have done outside the classroom. Your
extracurricular activities, such as jobs, sports, clubs and volunteer work, give colleges
a better sense of who you are and show them what you can bring to their campus
community.
2. If you’re in high school and you’re thinking about college — and you should be —
you should know that the courses you take now matter. That’s because college
admission officers want to see a solid foundation of learning that you can build on in
college. To create that foundation, take at least five solid academic classes every
semester/year. Start with the basics, and then move on to challenging yourself in
advanced courses. The courses listed below should prepare you for success in college
and beyond:
English Take English every year. Traditional courses, such
as American and English literature, help improve
your writing skills, reading comprehension and
vocabulary. Take higher-level English classes, like
AP, IB, and/or college-level classes.
Math To best prepare for colleges, take four maths in
high school. The highest preparation includes
Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, PreCalculus,
Calculus at Honors/Advanced Placement/IB levels
Science Science teaches you how to think analytically and
how to apply theories to reality. Colleges want to
see plenty of laboratory science classes like
biology, chemistry, and physics. For those who
plan to major in scientific fields, the honors, AP/IB
levels of these classes will look good on transcripts
and prepare students for high-level college work.
The most failed college classes are in the sciences.
Social Studies These classes will improve your understanding of
local and world events by studying cultures and
history that helped shape them. Suggested courses
are U.S. History, Government, Economics, World
History, Geography,
Foreign Languages Solid foreign language study shows that you are
willing to stretch beyond the basics. You should
look at the particular colleges and universities to
which you are applying to see what they require.
Most are now requiring three years of a foreign
language.
The Arts Research indicates that students who participate in
the arts often do better in school and on
standardized tests. The arts help you recognize
patterns, learn to notice differences and
similarities, and exercise your mind in unique
ways. Many colleges/universities recommend one
or two semesters in the arts. Good choices include
art, dance, music, or drama.
Challenging Work To ready yourself for college-level work, enroll in
challenging high school courses. Take college-level
classes when offered. Slacking off senior year or
taking easier electives instead core courses is
obvious to college admissions personnel. If you
want to make a good impression, study hard
during high school and take the most rigorous
courses at which you can be successful.
When It Becomes Too Much: Social
Media Addiction for Teens Posted on June 25, 2013 by http://simplystitchedtogether.com/2013/06/25/socialmediaaddictionforteens/
Within the last decade social media usage has gone from being used by mainly college students
to including young children, parents, grandparents, and everyone in between. A specific
population that seems to be particularly affected by this increase is adolescents. Walking
through the hallways of a high school you will now see teens on their cellphones updating
their status’, posting pictures on Instagram, and checking the latest gossip on Twitter. This
form of communication is completely revolutionizing peer relationships during a
developmentally important time. A question many parents have is, “When is it too much?”
Although internet addiction was not formally recognized in the DSM IV-R, many mental
health professionals believe that it has similar addictive properties as gambling, shopping, and
sex. These behavioral addictions become compulsive and obsessive, and provide a sense of
euphoria by repeatedly doing them. When an avid gambler pulls down the lever of a
machine or places a big bet, dopamine is released from the brain and provides an immediate
rush of positive sensation. This rush, often referred to as a “high,” is what many people get
addicted to. Mental health professionals that are pushing for formal acceptance of internet
addiction in DSM V believe that the same cycle is in action when someone becomes
dependent on the internet or social media.
Excessive internet usage amongst teens can negatively impact them in multiple domains of
their life. In a study completed on how using information and communication technologies
such as Facebook, text messaging, and instant messenger affects academic performance,
researchers found that those who use Facebook or text while completing academic work have
lower GPAs and that usage hinders their learning. Another study found that students who
used Facebook more frequently were less engaged with school.
Even if internet or social media obsession is not a formally diagnosed addiction, the usage of
these technologies increases a teen’s chance of participating in other risky behavior and
developing an addiction. Recently, a study was completed where adolescents (aged 13 to 15)
were shown experimenter-created Facebook profiles of older peers either drinking or
not. Those who were shown profiles of peers using alcohol were significantly impacted and
viewed alcohol use as normative and held cognitions that predict alcohol use. Since teens
were significantly impacted by just this small amount of exposure in this study, it is important
to monitor Facebook usage and talk with teens about alcohol use/abuse.
So what can parents do? Make their children delete Facebook? Not only would this probably
be impossible, it is not advisable. There are a lot of benefits for Facebook usage, including
being more connected, forming and maintaining social relationships, and having a format to
express their ideas. Instead of asking them to go cold turkey, here are some tips on how to
encourage a healthy relationship with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or whatever the next
“big” thing is: Become their friend. Create your own Facebook profile and request to be their
friend. Not only is this a great way for you to connect with old friends, it is a way to check
out what is going on in your teen’s life. If they won’t accept your friend request or are hiding
certain things from you, there is probably a bigger issue than them just being embarrassed that
their parent is on Facebook.
Have time set aside where they can’t be connected. Who wants to listen to a cellphone
constantly vibrating during dinner? Establish certain times with your child that they will
“disconnect” from the outside world. Not only will this provide quality time for you to spend
with them, it will decrease the chances of them becoming dependent on these connections.
Talk to them. If you are concerned about something you see on their “wall” or Twitter feed,
talk to them about it. One of the worst things a parent can do is let their kids feel like they
don’t care. Talking to them about what is going on in their life will make the conversations
where you are concerned go a lot smoother.
