JUNE Good News newsletter 2017

From Pastor LizDear Friends –

We have a serious problem in the church today. It is called apathy. “Apathy” is defined in the dictionary as: Lack of emotion or feeling or lack of interest in things generally found exciting, or moving; indifference. Indifference seems to sum up the attitude of many church members in this day and age.

Indifference takes many forms - not coming to meetings when you have agreed to serve, staying home on Sunday morning from Sunday School and/or worship, not assisting the church meet its financial obligations, never coming to any special worship services or events, leaving programs to be run by the same people year after year, never volunteering to help-out, never mentioning to anyone that you are a member of the church, and on and on.

When you became a member of the church you each pledged to “faithfully participate in its ministries by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your witness and your service.” Examine your situation and ask yourself, are you doing all these things? If you are, please keep up the good work. If you’re not - why not? Please reconsider your priorities in life. If your church is not a priority, then there is something very wrong.

I am constantly in prayer for our church and all its members. Please join me this month, this year, into the future, in praying for Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church and its members. We stand poised to make a great difference in this county and in this world.

Won’t you join with us to see this happen?  Blessings, Grace and Peace, Liz

Sunday Visitation SoughtChestnut Hill UMC is looking for several teams of lay people for Sunday afternoon visitation of church visitors. We are not looking for people to evangelize these visitors. We are seeking those would could stop by a visitor’s home and deliver a gift from the church and offer to answer any questions. We are not looking to enter the homes, but simply to thank them for coming. If you can help, please call or speak to the pastor. This is an important tool in true church growth. Thank you!

THANK YOU ~ EASTER OFFERINGWe collected $3,412.00. We want to thank you for your support.

Thanks so much for the cards, phone calls, and visits. The basket filled with such nice items and the beautiful Prayer Quilt really meant a lot. I hope I will get back to church in the near future. I have been through a lot and still have a lot of dental work to face.

Again, thanks for everything.~Love, June Crickenberger

I am so grateful for all the prayers, visits, cards, and flowers. My church family means so much to me. I am looking forward to when I can come back to church. Thank you again from the bottom my heart!!

Become a Friend of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church

Facebook at Chestnut HillUMC? Yes! Here’s A closer Look! Facebook, the largest social networking website according to 2015 Compete.com by worldwide monthly active users, followed by Twitter. Since September 2006, anyone over the age of 13 with a valid e-mail address can become a Facebook user. Facebook's target audience is more for an adult demographic than todays youth. Users can add friends and send them messages; update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves; and users can join

networks organized by workplace, school, or college. The website's name stems from the colloquial name of books given to students at the start of the academic year by university administrations in the US with the intention of helping students to get to know each other better.

Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow computer science students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The website's membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It then expanded further to include (potentially) any university student, then high school students, and, finally, to anyone aged 13 and over. The website currently has more than 500 million active users worldwide, as of 2015.

With this tool, Chestnut Hill UMC has a presence and we are asking you to take part and pass the word. Any friend can add pictures, post comments, share stories and keep others in the loop outside the walls of Chestnut Hill UMC. We are not abandoning the idea of a church website, but simply expanding with today’s technology and tomorrow’s future. Any thoughts and comments can be directed to the sites current administrators, Liz Ecklund, or Monica Campbell.

Top of the Hill will meet on Wednesday, May 23, 2017, 11:00 a.m. Organ recital and

discussion by Professor F. John Scott from Lynchburg College.  Professor Scott teaches courses in music theory, aural skills, and music technology. In addition, he teaches applied organ lessons and is conductor of the Lynchburg College Handbell Choir.  He is the Musician/Choir Director at Main Street UMC.  He is warm, witty and very knowledgeable.  Please join us and bring friends.

Children’s MinistryCongratulations to the children who participated in the musical, “The Easter Tree”. They did a wonderful. Many thanks to Jackie, Pat, June, David, Eleanor, and Carolyn who put together and served dinner after the play. Everyone enjoyed the meal and had a good time. Kingdom Kids will resume back in the Fall, times TBA. Special thanks to Kitty & Wilton Burgess who have been very supportive to our children.

Vacation Bible School will be June 19-23. Mark your calendars! Fort Hill UMC will be joining us this year and we are very excited about that. Our theme is “Glow For Jesus, Let Your Light Shine”. Matthew 5:16 will be our Bible verse. We need volunteers for Registration and Music, we have a leader. We need helpers for Arts and Crafts, Playtime, and Crew Leaders (they walk the children from one activity to another!). Please pray for our children, VBS, and how you can help. We are all commissioned by God to spread the good news! VBS is a great way to have fun and serve the Kingdom. We also need juice boxes. Please contact me if you want to be a

part of this special ministry.~Jody Underwood, Lay Children’s Ministry Coordinator

Mission NewsThe food cart for April was in bloom with items for Park View Mission.  We collected 64 food items that equaled 58Lbs. of food and 6 packs of toilet paper that equaled 58 rolls of toilet paper.  That was a job well done and much appreciated by Park View.  Your continued support of this mission is wonderful.

For June Park View is asking for meat products again, baked beans and pork-n-beans, and as always toilet paper.  In addition they are now trying to keep personal hygiene items.  They would like toothpaste and deodorant (for men and women).  Thank-you to all who respond to their needs.

~Thank-you from Linda Jessen & the Mission Committee
