It is encouraging to us to see the growing support of Goodland and really gives us a morale boost to see their smiling faces." The weather for the event was extremely cooperative (beside it being slightly windy) and many sat outside in the patio area to listen to live music provided by the band "Broken Yoke". Of course, the bounce houses were in full use throughout the day as many of the visiting kids and Goodland boys raced through the obstacle courses. Shortly before lunch, CVO Christine Boos gave a short introduction on what Goodland meant to her as a volunteer and board member. Christine recalled how Goodland has enriched her life as a volunteer and how she found stories from alumni encouraging. She noted that alumni are extremely vital to the success of Goodland. After the meal, the main event was opened up. Many of the donors took the opportunity to tour the new school building and adjacent library building. Many of the students arrived with their parents and were able to proudly display their work areas and achievement charts. First-time visitors to the campus strolled around campus and took photographs of many of the historical buildings on campus. "We were especially proud to show off the school building this year. We love showing donors their support in action," David Dearinger said. We can't wait to see everyone at next year's Open House!

Goodland Unharmed During Stormy Month

Odis was inducted last month into the National Technical Honor Society. This honor was accorded him because of his outstanding participation in the Service Careers Technology class taught by Mr. Howard Chapman, as well as his service to the community and his academic achievement at Goodland Academy. While in the class taught by Mr. Chapman, Odis has learned the basics in electricity, plumbing, carpentry and small engine repair. Odis was one of only two juniors to receive this honor during this event, and the only one from a private school. His teacher, Mr. Chapman and the Campus Director of the Hugo Campus, Ms. Debbie Golden awarded Odis the pin, tassel and certificate honoring him for this achievement.

Honors for Odis

As many of our readers are aware, the month of April was wrought with some tumultuous weather. While our thoughts and prayers go out to those that lost loved ones in the series of storms, we are thankful that our campus and our boys are safe.

"As we watched the weather on local radars, we noticed something peculiar," David Dearinger pointed out, "as we watched these massive cells approach Goodland, you could literally see the storm splitting in a one mile gap around Goodland!" Even as sheriffs deputies were notifying schools in the area that

an imminent tornado was approaching, we remained steadfast that God would continue to protect us. The dark clouds approached, the cold wind howled, and rain quickly fell, but it was over in a matter of minutes. The next day, the only noticeable damage was a cedar tree that had split in half at the Goodland cemetery. County crews were called out and the tree was quickly disposed of.

In a season that was considered the deadliest storm weather in four decades, we're all thankful that the Lord has Goodland under His protection.
