Goodman Theatre is Chicago’s oldest and largest not-for-profit

theater, internationally renowned for the quality of its produc-

tions, the depth and diversity of its artistic leadership and its

many community and educational programs.

The vision of the Goodman is to become the premier cultural organization in Chicago through productions and community programs that make an essential contribution to the quality of life in our society.

The Goodman has identified three institutional values that form the basis for its vision and objectives and serve as guiding pillars for our productions and programming. These values are:

VISION

QualITyGoodman Theatre believes that live theater illuminates the past, informs the present and imagines the future. We seek to provide our audiences with the definitive theater experience. We strive to give our artists the resources that enable them to dothe best possible work with the highest standards of excellence.

DIVerSITyGoodman Theatre believes that respect for diversity is a corner-stone of our community and our society. Our work features a variety of aesthetics, cultures and modes of theatrical expres-sion. We are committed to promoting creativity, collaboration, artistic risk-taking, freedom of expression and cultural diversity.

COmmuNITyGoodman Theatre believes that live theater plays a unique

role in the educational, social and economic development of a community. For example, theater develops cognitive skills, emotional growth and moral awareness, particularly in young people. Since the Goodman is a part of the community, we believe that we have a responsibility to improve the quality of life through our productions and educational programs.

reflecting on my 20th anniversary Season, I am especially gratified by how well we were able to cap-ture the essence of the Goodman’s remarkable history while signaling with bold strokes our vision for the future.

During the 2006/2007 Season, our audiences enjoyed stories from ancient Greece and Persia on one end of the historical-cultural spectrum, and from modern-day eastern europe, africa and the united States on the other. On our two stages, audiences encountered princes and paupers, heroes and scoundrels, lovers and killers and ordinary men and women facing down the odds against them with extraordinary dignity and humor.

my contemporized staging of Shakespeare’s King Lear launched the albert season. Set in the Balkans, King Lear starred Stacy Keach as an aging head of state whose vanity and pride set in motion the de-

struction of his family and country. Kicking off a month-long celebration of the life and work of august Wilson, guest director Kenny leon helmed the stirring, Broadway-bound production of Radio Golf, the final chapter in Wilson’s monumental cycle of plays chronicling the african american experience in the 20th century. Goodman associate Producer Steve Scott’s bold, unflinching production of the midwest premiere of David lindsay-abaire’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Rabbit Hole rendered the devastating impact of a child’s death on the fragile equilibrium of a family. With his provocative production of Oedipus Complex, Frank Galati enticed audiences to enter the minds of Freud and Oedipus and to consider the primal urges that consumed their lives. mary Zimmerman brought the albert season to a close with her luminous revival of Mirror of the Invisible World—a timely reminder that the essen-tial qualities of the human heart transcend time and place. The Owen season got off to a rousing start with Kate Whoriskey’s world-premiere production of Noah Haidle’s Vigils, a delightfuland fantastical take on what it’s like to start dating again when you’re the widow of a fireman whose unsettled soul lives in a box at the end of your bed. my production of richard Nelson’s Frank’s Home followed Vigils. yet another world premiere, Frank’s Home captured a moment in Frank lloyd Wright’s life when his career and family—along with his latest architectural achievement—threatened to crumble. The Owen season closed with In the Continuum, an internationally acclaimed and electrifying blend of poetry, song and storytelling about african american and african women with aIDS performed by its gifted young creators, Danai Gurira and Nikkole Salter.

The fourth annual New Stages Series in the Owen was first among our special events during the 2006/2007 Season, featuring new works by Ifa Bayeza, Tarell alvin mcCraney, Tanya Saracho, José rivera and universes. William Brown directed the 29th an-nual production of A Christmas Carol with irrepressible energy and imagination. Our celebration of august Wilson continued with Congo Square Theatre Company’s production of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, directed by Derrick Sanders. Chuck Smith directed the world premiere of José rivera’s dark-comedy thriller Massacre (sing to your children), a co-production with Teatro Vista. Finally, the Goodman staged selected pieces from Pulitzer Prize-winner Suzan-lori Parks’ 365Days/365Plays in the lobby areas as part of looptopia (downtown Chicago’s first-ever dusk-to-dawn celebration of culture).

The resounding success of the 2006/2007 Season is a tribute to the gifted artists whose work graced our stages; to the extraor-dinary leadership of executive Director roche Schulfer, General manager Katherine murphy and associate Producer Steve Scott; to the dedicated staff who are without peer in the american theater; and to the passionate support and generosity of our trustees, donors and patrons. The foundation of our work has always been—and continues to be—a fierce, shared sense of community and purpose. I thank you for continuing to make the Goodman strong through your presence, your patronage and your advocacy.

During Goodman Theatre’s 2006/2007 Season we celebrated artistic Director robert Falls’ 20th anniversary of artistic leadership. This year, Bob designed a season that crystallized the amazing artis-tic journey he’s taken us on over the last 20 years and offered us a glimpse of what we can expect in the next 20.

along with our artistic associates and an unmatched team of theater artists, Bob brought to life a sea-son that embraced both the old and the new: from his ground-breaking production of King Lear to our august Wilson Celebration featuring Radio Golf; from Frank Galati’s striking new look at a classic play, Oedipus Complex, to a revisitation of mary Zimmerman’s Mirror of the Invisible World; a production of David lindsay-abaire’s Pulitzer Prize-winning new play, Rabbit Hole, and a host of new works by inspiring and diverse playwrights.

even as we celebrated a long and eventful history of artistic achievement, the artists, trustees and staff spent the season develop-ing a plan for the future of the Goodman. We’ll be sharing more details with you soon, but I assure you that the Goodman will continue to stay true to our core values of Quality, Diversity and Community while pursuing our vision of being the premier cultural organization in Chicago.

as always, none of the work we do here would be possible without the support of our tremendously dedicated and hard-working Board of Trustees and Women’s Board. With their help, we were able to raise a record level of contributed income—an astounding 13 percent increase over last year.

I would like to give special thanks to les Coney, who completed his second and final year of service as Board Chairman. les’ leader-ship has been instrumental in helping us realize an unprecedented level of growth in all areas of the theater. His enthusiasm, drive and unshakeable commitment to the Goodman and its mission have made the past two years a period of exceptional achievement.

I must also thank our many donors and volunteers and, of course, our audiences, whose loyalty and support have made Goodman Theatre what it is today. If you would like more information about the Goodman, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Sincerely,

roche SchulferExecutive Director

Goodman Theatre is a rare and special organization, and it has been a privilege to serve as Chairman during its 2006/2007 Season.

First, I have to thank robert Falls and roche Schulfer for their consummate organizational leadership. Their vision and dedication to artistic integrity truly make the Goodman one of the premier cultural organizations in Chicago. Both Bob and roche have made my job an easy one; whomever I introduce to the Goodman cannot help but be impressed by the quality and diversity of the work on its stages.

Our world-class theater artists presented one outstanding production after another: Bob’s monumental King Lear; the moving production of august Wilson’s last play, Radio Golf; José rivera’s chilling Mas-sacre (sing to your children) and Danai Gurira and Nikkole Salter’s heartbreaking In the Continuum.

I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to serve with one of the best non-profit boards in Chicago, which, along with our Women’s Board and Scenemakers Council, includes some of the most dedicated professionals with whom I’ve had the privilege to work. Their belief in the Goodman’s mission, their commitment to the theater and their unmatched fund-raising prowess have been instrumental in making the Goodman the outstanding institution it is today—making 2007 a record fundraising year. I would especially like to thank Chair elect Shawn m. Donnelley and Vice Chairman Peter I. mason, President Vicki V. Hood, Immediate Past Chair Carol Prins and Honorary Chairman albert Ivar Goodman.

Perhaps my proudest achievement while serving as Chairman has been the Goodman’s continuing progress in the area of diversity. The exceptional creative work, driven by our artistic Collective, is made available through special initiatives such as the Divine Subscription package; special events like Diversity Night and Women’s Night; and our nationally recognized education programs. The success of these programs demonstrates the Goodman’s capacity to embrace the Chicago community and provide unparal-leled opportunities to hear diverse voices on stage.

None of the work that we do at the Goodman would be possible without the generous support of our donors. It has been my honor to serve as Chairman, and I look forward to many years of continued service to this amazing organization.

During the 2006/2007 Season the Women’s Board raised more than $1 million for Goodman Theatre. a portion of the money raised this year was used to sponsor the production of Rabbit Hole, and the proceeds from this season’s Gala were designated for the Goodman’s unparalleled education programs.

The Women’s Board raises money through a variety of projects during the season, culminating with its major fundraiser, the annual Goodman Theatre Gala, which featured the legendary Diahann Carroll. It is my pleasure to recognize our Gala Chair Karen Pigott and Corporate Chair ruth ann m. Gillis for their leadership and steadfast commitment. They, along with their committee, worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this incredible evening.

On behalf of our members, I would like to express special thanks to the following Gala Sponsor Partners who joined my husband John and me in supporting the event: Katherine a. abelson and robert J. Cor-

nell, Sharon and Charles angell, CNa, Commercial Packaging/altivity, exelon, ellen and Paul Gignilliat, mcDonald’s and Karen and Dick Pigott. I also wish to acknowledge american airlines for its extraordinary support of the Gala, raffle and auction.

The Women’s Board’s host of activities made this a year to remember, including our Fame Fantasy Food adventure auction and annual appeal. I would like to acknowledge annual appeal Co-Chairs marcia Cohn and linda Saranow and auction Co-Chairs Joy Dreimann and linda robin for their guidance and dedication. I also would like to thank all the Officers for their unflagging support. I am truly grateful for their hard work and insight.

In closing, I would like to pay tribute to Patricia Kaplan who passed away may 19, 2007. Patricia was one of the founding mem-bers of Goodman Theatre Women’s Board, and her support of the cultural community of Chicago was heartfelt and generous. We feel her absence, and as a Board we will continue to pursue our mutual passion for supporting the outstanding, compelling and diverse artistic visions that come to life on the Goodman stages.

as audience ambassadors to Goodman Theatre, Scenemakers Council members raise awareness and philanthropic support for the theater and its exemplary productions and events. With this mission in mind, the Council launched a new subscription package called “The Scene” during the 2006/2007 Season. Designed to open the theater doors to new and younger audiences, The Scene included three parties and three plays. During each Scene event, young professionals mingled with their peers and engaged in discussions about the theater.

The Council has seen other successes throughout this season with the change and growth of our mem-bership. every few months, we welcomed new members into the group, each providing a new voice and opportunity to expand our audience development. We have also experienced heartache this season as we said goodbye to fellow Scenemaker John H. moore IV, who passed away unexpectedly this past summer. He will be missed.

I would like to thank Chairman les Coney and the Boards for their support of the Council. les has done so much to bring the Scen-emakers together and to inspire and guide our efforts. I would also like to express my great appreciation to Dorlisa martin, melissa Hard and Sarah Harrington for all of their hard work and dedication. They are the real directors of the Scenemakers’ show.

It has been a pleasure working with the outgoing leadership team, Vice President Joseph Giles, Treasurer Thomas Seftenberg and Secretary Carolyn Taylor-Chapple, who have helped us all take this group to the next level. I know that we are in great hands with the incoming leadership team of President Daniella levitt, Vice President elizabeth Balthrop, Treasurer aaron Davidson, Secretary Craig mcCaw and Scene Package leader Tony Glenn.

I am honored to be a part of this Council and I look forward to my continued involvement with this group, and, with the Goodman.

Nottage and director Kate Whoriskey traveled to africa to conduct research for Ruined, which is set in the republic of Congo in the present day and explores the impact of war on african women. The play will be produced in the 2008/2009 Season.

WOrkShOpSa two-week workshop of Passion Play: a cycle in three parts by Sarah ruhl: In December of 2006, a workshop was held in New york, led by award-winning British director mark Wing-Davey. after the play’s world-premiere production at arena Stage in Washington, D.C., the Goodman committed to produc-ing ms. ruhl’s ambitious three-play cycle in the 2007/2008 Season. ms. ruhl continued to work on the play during this workshop, where she combined text work with research-based interviews. The workshops provided ms. ruhl with the raw material to rethink the third part of the cycle, which takes place in South Dakota 1969–1984 and centers around a Vietnam vet-eran. The result was a new draft, which was read at the end of the workshop and served as a launching point for the rehearsal process for the full production, also directed by mr. Wing-Davey.

a four-day workshop of Ghostwritten by Naomi Iizuka: ms. Iizuka came into this workshop with a collection of images, questions and texts to serve as a jumping-off point for a collab-orative process with director lisa Portes and a cast of Chicago-based actors. In developing the structure of Ghostwritten, ms. Iizuka drew from the fairy tale of rumpelstilkin. This text, along with research into asian cuisine and the cultural significance of food, served as fuel for the actors to create improvisations and compositions, which ms. Iizuka then wove into her text. The actors read a third of the play at the end of the workshop and ms. Iizuka continued to work on the text at the Sundance Institute Theatre lab in the summer of 2007.

a three-day workshop of Ruined by lynn Nottage: In January of 2007, the Goodman hosted a three-day workshop of lynn Nottage’s commissioned play Ruined. This workshop with director Kate Whoriskey allowed ms. Nottage to rework the first act of her play.

VIGIlS By NOaH HaIDle, DIreCTeD By KaTe WHOrISKey

Two years after a fireman died trying to save a baby from a burning home, his widow is clinging to the past—literally. She has trapped her husband’s soul in a box, and it ricochets from one memory to the next. When a handsome wooer arrives onthe scene, the widow must decide between the past she knows and a future that she can only imagine. Subsequent to its premiere at the Goodman, Vigils was produced at the Woolly mammoth Theatre in Washington, D.C.

Frank’s Home steals a look into the tumultuous private life of the man who created a new architectural vocabulary. It is summer 1923, and Frank lloyd Wright has recently left Chicago for California, determined to embrace Hollywood’s youthful scene and revive his career. He has recently enjoyed the successful completion of his latest “wonder of the world,” Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel, but his splintered family still has deep-seated resentments. Then news arrives of an earthquake in Japan that has crumbled Wright’s prized hotel to the ground. Or has it? Immediately following its run in the Owen Theatre, Frank’s Home moved to Playwrights Horizons in New york.

Covered in blood, seven people rush into the living room of an old New england farmhouse clutching ice picks, cleavers and pitchforks. members of the closely knit latino community ofbucolic Granville, New Hampshire, have just murdered their fellow citizen Joe, town bully and local tyrant. They are exhila-rated, having liberated the town of Joe’s outrageous crimes after six years of terror. But the killers begin to have doubts about the righteousness of their act, about each other’s trust-worthiness and, worst of all, about Joe: is he really dead?

Goodman Theatre embraces education and community as vitalcomponents of its mission and has succeeded in making its education and Community Programs a leading force in educa-tional programs among the nation’s professional theaters. TheGoodman creates and distributes collateral materials for students and educators designed to enrich the experience of attending the theater and to shape learning at the most basic levels.

THe STuDeNT SuBSCrIPTION SerIeSThe Student Subscription Series has been the anchor of the Goodman’s educational and community programming for 21 years. It has become a national model for in-depth educational programming and is the only program of its kind in Chicago to be offered absolutely free of charge. In the 2006/2007 Season, 48 schools and 2,238 students were involved in the Goodman’s Student Subscription Series.

The program curriculum is based on five productions of our main stage season and teachers choose three shows to share with their students. Prior to each student matinee, Goodman staff and artists, along with directors and designers, conduct seminars to prepare the teachers to teach each play.

For each play, students and teachers receive study guides de-signed by the Goodman to link the plays on stage to required curriculum elements. The study guides suggest class activi-ties to integrate state and local educational goals, including Chicago’s literacy standards.

Post-performance discussions challenge students to think critically and creatively about each production and provide them with a forum for asking questions and discussing ideas. Parents receive free tickets to attend performances with their teens, encouraging them to continue discussions about the Goodman’s productions outside the classroom and to take an active part in the education of their children.

GeNeral THeaTer STuDIeSThe General Theater Studies Program is designed not for the stars of school plays, but for middle-achievers—an often-overlooked group of students who may suffer from a lack of individual attention. The General Theater Studies Program provides a wide range of artistic disciplines to create a truly unique experience for these students.

This summer, for the first time, the yollocalli program in Pilsen and the youth Drama Workshop programs were brought underthe umbrella of General Theater Studies and moved into the facilities of Goodman Theatre. The theater’s physical space, the proximity to working professionals from all theater dis-ciplines and the ability to utilize staff and artistic associates served to enhance and focus the work of the students.

a team of four teaching artists led collaborative workshops and creative exercises over the course of five weeks. each artist hadworked in the past with the youth Drama Workshops and yollocalli. They were assisted by six teaching assistants, three of whom had been students in the Goodman neighborhood programs. Participants attended performances at the Goodman and other theaters around the city.

renowned african american playwright Kia Corthron joined the students for a two-day residency intended to develop their writing skills. She used her play Breath, Boom as an example for developing the structure of a play. John Culbert, lighting designer for Mirror of the Invisible World, met with the group to share his design concepts and talk about the role of produc-tion design in bringing a play to life. resident artistic associate Henry Godinez discussed his experience as a latino actor and director and Casting Director adam Belcuore led participants through the process of a casting session. Writers and performersNikkole Salter and Danai Gurira also met with students to emphasize the importance of honing one’s craft and to share the evolution of their play, In the Continuum, from a student project to an international phenomenon.

INTerNSHIPS aND FellOWSHIPSDuring the 2006/2007 Season, Goodman Theatre’s Internship Program provided career training for 33 undergraduate and graduate students and early-career professionals in every non-performance area of theater.

The maggio Directing Fellowship, created to honor the memory of former associate artistic Director michael maggio, provides an early-career, Chicago-based director with a season-long experience at the Goodman. The 2007 maggio Fellow was anthony moseley, a co-founder and artistic director of Collabo-raction Theatre.

During the 2006/2007 Season, Goodman Theatre also initi-ated the minority arts Fellowship Program. Funded by a grant from the Joyce Foundation, this program provides entry- and mid-level minority arts administrators with a season-long posi-tion with the Goodman’s management staff. The two minority arts Fellows selected for participation in the program’s inau-gural year were Brittany Barnes (special events management) and Camille Kuthrell (public relations and marketing).

auDIeNCe eDuCaTION aND eNrICHmeNT Provided each season at the Goodman, the Noon Salon Series offers noontime discussions of selected Goodman productions. Hosted by members of the artistic staff and featuring guest scholars (in partnership with the Graham School of Continuing education at the university of Chicago), these events provide historical, social and literary context for the productions. Produc-tions featured in the 2006/2007 Noon Salon Series included King Lear, Oedipus Complex and Mirror of the Invisible World.

In addition to productions of Radio Golf and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, the august Wilson Celebration, held in January and February of 2007, provided several other audi-ence enrichment activities:

“The Ground on Which We Stood,” a two-part panel discus-sion led by Celebration coordinator and Goodman resident Director Chuck Smith, examined the development of august Wilson’s career as a poet and playwright. Panelists for these discussions included lou Bellamy, founder of Penumbra The-atre in Saint Paul; Todd Kreidler, Wilson’s longtime associate and dramaturg; Dena levitan, Wilson’s personal assistant; Dr. Vernell a. lille, producing artistic director of Kuntu repertory Theatre in Pittsburgh; director Claude Purdy; Constanza rome-ro, Wilson’s widow; Sala uldin, co-founder with Wilson of the Black Horizons Theatre Company in 1968; poet Chawley P. Williams; and Sakina ansari Wilson, Wilson’s daughter.

moderated by Derrick Sanders, artistic director of Congo Square Theatre Company, “actors on august” included some of Wilson’s leading interpreters (including l. Scott Caldwell, anthony Chisholm, John earl Jelks and michole Briana White) in a discussion of the unique challenges and rewards of Wilson’s writing for the stage.

Finally, a staged reading of Fences, directed by longtime Wil-son interpreter marion mcClinton, brought together a variety of noteworthy actors (including Frankie Faison, a member of the original company of the play, and actress/writer/Goodman artistic associate regina Taylor) to celebrate the 20th anniver-sary of this landmark play.

On September 1, 2006, the Chicago cultural community lost one of its most ardent supporters, Hope abelson. among other philanthropic endeavors, she created the lester and Hope abelson Fund for artistic Development at the Goodman to ensure that we could continue to pursue new voices and cultivate emerging playwrights long into the future. Her unflinching advocacy for theater artists was an inspiration.

No one played a more important role in the growth of Chicago theater over the past 30 years than Hope. each day, as curtain time approaches and the lights go down and the first lines are spoken at every theater in Chicago—that is her moment—the moment that she made possible for all of us. She will live in that moment forever. We love you Hope, and we miss you dearly. Hope Abelson and Roche Schulfer.
