Bristol providing an increasing number ofinternational flights. For those wishing to travelto the Continent, there are ferry ports at bothPlymouth and Weymouth. The A30 and A303can be reached within about fifteen minutes, theA303 providing a fast route to London.

The PropertyNot surprisingly, Goodmans House is ListedGrade II as being of historic or architecturalinterest and has many of the hallmarks of aGeorgian property. Records show that a dwellinghas been on this site since at least the fourteenthcentury with a reference to William Godman in1332. In recent years the house has been thesubject of a restoration programme, which hasincluded a new welsh slate roof, new bathroomsand redecoration. The house retains a number offeatures synonymous with the Georgian era,including panelled doors, sash windows withshutters, and exquisite plaster cornices. Anothernotable improvement includes a second floorconversion of the attic space, which now providesa good size guest bedroom and adjoining showerroom. The grounds provide a perfect setting forGoodmans House, gently sloping with manymature trees, lawned areas, space for thosewishing to keep horses and a particularlyattractive feature is the Roman style swimmingpool set within the original walled gardens.

Furley Cottages are set away from the main houseand include three two bedroom cottages in theprincipal building and two one bedroom detachedcottages. The cottages afford a good income butcould also provide scope for conversion into otheruses, subject to the necessary planning permissionsand listed building consents. The English TourismCouncil rate the holiday cottages as Four Star.

SituationGoodmans House occupies a secluded andtranquil setting in the heart of the East DevonCountryside, a designated Area of OutstandingNatural Beauty. The property is close to thesmall village of Membury with its church, postoffice / store, and primary school. The markettowns of Axminster and Honiton are a few milesaway, and Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast areabout thirty minutes’ drive. Taunton, the countytown of Somerset is within easy reach and has agood shopping centre with most well-knownhigh street stores. Exeter, the Cathedral City,less than thirty miles on the fast A30, offerssimilar facilities in the recently opened PrincessHay Shopping Centre. Taunton has a goodrange of schools including The King’s College,The Queen’s College, Taunton School and King’sHall Preparatory School. Colyton GrammarSchool, with one of the finest academic records

in the country, is within easy reach, as arePerrott Hill near Crewkerne, Port Regis nearShaftesbury, Sherborne, Millfield and Bryanston.

Good sporting and recreational facilities arefound throughout the area, for those withequestrian interests there is National Huntracing at Haldon Hill, Exeter, Taunton andWincanton, golf courses are found at LymeRegis, Axmouth, Honiton and Taunton and alittle further away at Tiverton and Exeter.

OUTSIDEA handsome pillared entrance leads in from thepassing country lane to the gravelled carriage drivewhich passes the cottages and leads up to the mainhouse and beyond, opening out into a goodparking area.
