When you get news of someone passingaway the first thing you may feel is shock thatquickly turns into grieving which is followed byyour memories about that person. Some of thosememories may make you cry, some make yousmile. Gathering with friends and family andrecalling good times and the sad is the start ofthe healing process. Most often, these gatheringstake place at a service for the one that haspassed.

In recent years, funeral services haveevolved from formal, structured ceremonieswith little or no information regarding the life ofthe deceased to a personalized celebration of alife remembered.

• At a funeral for a well-known concertpianist, the family opted to have a Steinwayand Sons piano moved to the gallery of thefuneral home. The florist created a hugespray of white flowers cascading from thestrings of the piano onto a large carpet offlowers surrounding the instrument.

• Another family brought in items related tothe decedent’s work as a professionalhorseman for his visitation. Saddles, boots, numerous bales of hay, partial fencestructures and even a live horse in a make-shift corral transformed the funeral homeinto a fitting tribute to a passionateequestrian.

• For the funeral of an avid huntsman, theflorist turned the funeral home chapel altarinto a hunting blind. The deceased’s belovedhunting dogs were nearby, standing inhunting position.

• The funeral service for a cycling enthusiastdisplayed the decedent’s road bike andcycling medals next to the casket. At thecemetery, members from his cycling clubescorted the hearse carrying his casket fromthe cemetery gates to the gravesite on theirbicycles.

Other elements can personalize a funeralservice in addition to themes and creative décor. For example, music at a funeral service is notlimited strictly to religious hymns. Funeral songselection can and should include the decedent’sfavorite music. Photographs can easilypersonalize a service as well. Today it iscommonplace to feature not only photographs, but also video tributes during a visitation

The bottom line is that funeral services arechanging to meet the needs of a generation thathas different ideas about life and death. You andthose you care for, can expect more and demandmore from the funeral planning process. Makinga plan in advance is the best way to ensure thatone’s memorial service matches theirpersonality and preferences.

Find a funeral home that is willing to helpyou design a final tribute for a loved one oryourself. It is the story of a unique life….tell ityour way to create a lasting expression of aspecial life.

With Oregon having the 3rd highestcremation rate in the U.S., approximately 75%of Oregonians are choosing cremation. Whetherthis decision is made by you in a prearrangementplan or by a family member at the time a deathoccurs, there is one more decision to make thatis usually ignored. That is, what should be donewith the cremated remains?

When one does prearrangements forthemselves, the most typical response to thisquestion is “release them to my family”. So it isdone. The family takes the urn home and thinks, now what? They don’t want to make a hastydecision they will later regret, so the urn goes onthe closet shelf. Sometimes it is weeks ormonths later when a decision is made buttypically, it is years. In some cases, it becomesthe next generation’s issue to deal with.

Understandably, this is not a topic familieslike but one that should be discussed. I knowcouples who have been married for over sixtyyears that admit they have never discussedfuneral or cemetery arrangements with eachother. Some children refuse to discuss thesubject altogether with their parents; however, ifdecisions are made and your wishes are relayedto your family, it is one of the best gifts you canleave them with. You are erasing any guilt thatmay accompany your family if the decision isleft up to them.

It is important to know all your optionsbefore the decision is made. Equally importantis that your family is comfortable with yourdecision. Before he died, a gentleman had toldhis wife that he wanted to be cremated and

scattered in the ocean. She honored his wishesand did exactly that. Later, she admitted that itwas the worse decision she ever made. She soldher home in the valley and bought one close tothe ocean near the location where he wasscattered so she could walk along the beachevery day to feel as close as she could to him.

Some people choose to have their crematedremains scattered in a favorite location. If this isyour wish, your family is in agreement with itand it is legal to do so, then by all means do it.All of us are uniquely different so what is rightfor one person, may not be right for another. There are some people who miss having adesignated location to memorialize their lovedone and would prefer to have that special placeto go to. If you are one of those people, verbalizeit to your family.

In addition to traditional burial services andcrypts, Hillcrest offers various options forcremated remains with prices starting as low as$195.00. A variety of niches are availableincluding glass-front, outside nichesoverlooking Grants Pass and niches inside ourchapel. Several urn gardens offer inexpensiveways to place cremated remains. If a family hasscattered their loved one’s remains but still wanta place to memorialize them, Hillcrest offers amemorial wall where a plaque with a laserengraved picture of their loved one can beplaced or a memorial bench is another option, aswell.

Buying a new home is a dream for many.Whether it be a house or a condo or even a rentalproperty, new buyers should be conscious ofhow secure the home is for the years to come.Doors that are hard to shut or locks that are hardto operate, a dog door is often overlooked foreasy access by burglars. If you have a hard timeusing a key, a replacement key can be cut on alarger head key or add a digital lock so you don'tneed a key. Many locksmiths will give a free inhome safety inspection.

Things you can look for on your ownregarding security: Windows that don't lock orsliding glass doors where the owner uses a stickor a piece of wood wedged in as a lock. Thereare devices that can be added at waist level tosecure sliding doors. Do you have to slam yourdoors before the deadbolt works? Do you have adeadbolt? Does your door blow open by itself? All these things can be easily corrected by alocksmith without hiring a general contractor.

Did you know that you can have one key thatoperates your whole property and haveindividual keys for the gardener or house sitter? The individual keys only allow access to thegarden shed, garage or any other door of yourchoosing. This is a locksmithing specialty calledmaster keying. Most pin tumbler locks commonin todays homes can be master keyed. You mayalso opt for the hired help keys to be on Do NotDuplicate keys, this is an added bit of securityfor you.

According to the State of Oregon, you have theright to select the motor vehicle repair shop ofyour choice. Not all body shops are the same. While there are many shops that provide excellentservice and quality repairs, there are importantaspects to consider when choosing a repair center:

• Training – Certified training is crucial toensure proper repairs. As vehicles advancewith technology, it is imperative thattechnicians stay current with the changes. I-CAR training is a designation to look foralong with Original Equipment Manufacturer(OEM) certifications. I-CAR is conducted bya certified trainer and the requirementsinclude documented hours plus testing onspecific topics and annual continuededucation is necessary to stay current. OEMcertification is where a collision repairfacility has completed recommendedcollision industry training and/or hasexhibited excellence in the collision repairprocess and procedures through verificationof a particular manufacturer. For instance, ifyou own a Honda, look for a shop that isHonda ProFirst certified. Just a note, not allmanufacturers have certifications.

• Customer Service – Everybody wants to betreated with respect and feel important. Fromthe manner that the phone is answered to thedelivery process, this dictates the level ofcustomer service. How friendly and helpfulis the staff? Does the body shop give updateson the repair process? Is there a survey tocomplete to give feedback with yourexperience? If you pose a question, do theyanswer it to the best of their ability? Are theemployees competent? Do you feel like youare able to express concerns? Are your needsbeing heard? These are important questionsthat can create a pleasurable experience withan unleasurable circumstance.

• Loaner Cars – Often times when a collisionrepair is needed, customers do not have othertransportation. Some body shops provideFREE loaner cars for the customer. A loanercar is an option when rental reimbursement isnot on the insurance policy or if the customeris paying out-of-pocket. There are usuallygeneral guidelines to using a loaner car: Thecustomer must be over 18 years of age; theymust have full-coverage insurance; a $50hold on a major debit or credit card, refundable as long as there is no damageupon the return; the customer agrees to staywithin a 50 mile radius each day of the storeand no smoking/pets. A rental agreement issigned and the customer acceptsresponsibility. Over a period of time, this cansave the customer hundreds of dollars.

• Equipment – State-of-the-art equipment isimportant when repairing highly advancedvehicles of today. This includes themeasurement and frame straightening of theunibody, to the welding and replacement ofbody panels, to the refinishing. Does theshop have the ability to measure andstraighten your vehicle to bring it back tooriginal manufacturer specifications? Doesthe shop have resistant spot welders, siliconebronze or aluminum welders? The shopshould have the ability to useenvironmentally friendly waterborne paintand be able to “bake” the clear coat.Nowadays, all of this is absolutely necessary.

The key to a successful repair is beingeducated and empowered. Choosing the rightbody shop is as challenging as finding the rightdoctor, dentist or lawyer.
