A Message from Deb …

This is our last formal Newsletter for 2016. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the staff, students and community members for making this a very memorable and positive year. We will have a short News Bulletin in week 9 to capture our Intensive English Language Program Breakfast and Year 7 graduation.

A Year with Frog and Toad

What can I say ... I was speechless! A very rare thing! I had the pleasure of attending the musical presented by 4M and 5M two weeks ago. The professional nature of this performance was outstanding. The collaboration between Janet, Bronwyn and Kate to create it was exceptional. The standard of this event reinforces our vision to move towards having a Specialist Arts program all year, which begins in 2017.

Early Years and Primary Years Concerts Once again all our classes’ performances

entertained the masses. Our Taiko drumming ensemble performed on both nights, a great culmination of their hard work throughout the year. Many thanks to all the staff, students and parents involved in organising the items. Special thanks to Carrie who coordinated the whole event. Our Comperes (Abbey, Methasha, Haneulle and Helen) and students responsible for props (Tashfia, Oscar, Zach, Nikki, Emma and Zoe) were brilliant. A great example of student

leadership in action. See the fabulous photos in this Newsletter.

New Reception Families Pizza Night

It was great to get families of our new reception

children together for a pizza night. This was an informal gathering so families could connect in preparation for them joining the Primary School in 2017.

Sports Awards Assembly Time and Date Change Due to medals taking longer than expected to be ready we have had to change the Sports Award Assembly to Thursday the 15th of December at 2pm in the Gym. Students from year 3 to 7 will

attend.

Acknowledging our fabulous Preschool team

Recently at a Governing Council meeting the members formally acknowledged our wonderful team who lead the learning at our Preschool. Parents of the Preschool are very appreciative of their fantastic work. They are welcoming and a blessing for parents. The Governing Council feel we are fortunate to have the Preschool as an integral part of Goodwood Primary School.

Volunteer Thank You Morning Tea An invitation was sent out last week to all

volunteer parents to join the staff for a thank you morning tea on Friday 9th December—10.40am in the PAC. This is put on by staff to acknowledge and thank all our volunteer parents for their efforts.

Science Technology and Engineering Maths (STEM)

It is wonderful to wander around our school and see STEM

in action as part of the children’s Inquiry Learning.

Often their work is connected to working with students from other classes.

Students showcase and test their

learning in terms of relevance and engagement. As our school received STEM funding we have a great opportunity to create learning spaces across the school that will support and build on our current work. Progress on our STEM

Works upgrade is gathering pace, following the appointment of Phillips and Pilkington as the project’s architect. STEM is the name given to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (incorporating physics and chemistry). These are often taught together, recognising their interrelationship. Over the next six weeks, the architects will work closely with school and department staff to develop project plans. This begins the process of turning our school’s vision into reality, with plans and designs in place at the

study’s conclusion. Our $1 million project is one of 139 across the state. Projects are expected to be completed from February through to December 2018. For more information please visit: https://www.decd.sa.gov.au/sites-and-facilities/stemworks Many thanks goes to Cameron Bryson and Julia Wetherall who has supported the planning process for this exciting opportunity.

Staffing 2016 At this stage we are waiting to hear on a number of contract vacancies so while we will be saying ... ‘see you later’ to a few of our staff, we hope to have some of the

them back on deck in 2017. We will have an article about these staff in week 9’s news bulletin. However, we do know that some staff will be changing locations and we wish them all the best. Kim Raftery, Ria Harrison and Jaye Ventura will be leaving Goodwood at the end of the year. Our wonderful IELC staff will hopefully receive positions at other schools. We thank Nina, Emily, Sunitha and Carmen for their wonderful work over the years.

Ria will be moving up to Whyalla to be with her partner Simon.

Kim Raftery from our preschool will be looking to get work closer to home.

Jaye Ventura will start her teaching career after working with us as an School Support Officer this year.

Here is the great IELP team. Our News Bulletin in week 9 will also feature their work and acknowledge the great contributions they have made to Goodwood ...

Languages 2018 and beyond Silvana Barbon, our Italian teacher, is wanting to focus on

other areas of her teaching career rather than teaching Italian. Our Personnel Advisory Committee (PAC) is happy to facilitate this in the future. What this means is the PAC have found out which languages are spoken in other neighbouring schools and explored which languages are spoken most globally to consider future opportunities for our students lives. From this it has been decided that we will transition to teaching Mandarin as our Language Other Than English over the next few years. This will involve planning a process for change next year with the view to beginning in 2018. For example, older classes, say

years 3—7 would continue Italian and Reception to year 2 would begin Mandarin. Thanks again for an amazing 2016. While we have had a sad event during the year with Janet Harper passing away, our learning program and community participation has been wonderful. Full credit goes to the staff and parents of our community. Enjoy a relaxing and positive Christmas break.

Kind regards Deborah Brassington Principal

Great Achievements at Goodwood

Goodwood Primary School and Preschool Mission Statement Hi we are the Student Ambassadors for 2016. Last Wednesday we presented our

school’s mission statement to the students at assembly. At the start of the school year many classes talked about what it means to be a successful learner at Goodwood. We took this information and created a mission statement. A mission statement helps people understand what our school wants to achieve in the future. The staff and parents have provided feedback on this mission statement so we would like to present to you the Goodwood Primary School and Preschool Mission Statement…..

Our Mission ………..

The Goodwood Primary School and Preschool community promotes active lifelong learning.

We appreciate and value the views of others.

The community works collaboratively to design educational programs that support students to develop the necessary dispositions to become successful learners who are confident, creative and informed global citizens.

Our Diversity is Our Strength.

Our 2017-2019 Strategic Plan Parents and staff have created a strategic plan which outlines our Vision, Priority and Actions for Goodwood Primary and Preschool in terms of these three areas: Community and Diversity, Learning Environment and Quality Teaching and Learning This document will be referred to when we are making decisions and creating our site plans and targets to ensure all we do at Goodwood Primary School and Preschool reflects our vision. This document will be emailed to families soon.

Great Achievements at Goodwood

Ethnic Schools Children’s Day Parade and Concert 27 students from Goodwood Primary School learn Hindi and Sanskrit language from an Ethnic School Saraswati Veda Pathshala, which is managed by Vishva Hindu Parishad of Australia Inc.

More than 10 students from this school participated in the Ethnic Schools Children’s Day Parade and Concert on 29 October 2016. This was an opportunity for them to not only exhibit what they had learned, but also to share and learn from other cultures.

The students walked from Victoria Park to Adelaide Oval in their traditional dresses and costumes carrying the school banner. They waved to the crowd gathered to see the parade. Once at the Oval the children sang a Hindi song that they had learned by heart and enthralled the audience. They did this with passion and pride and enjoyed

every bit of it. Minister Susan Close was present at the concert and praised the efforts by all children and applauded the volunteer teachers of the ethnic schools. She emphasised that the role of language and culture is critical in making Australia a truly multicultural community.

The students who participated in the concert are pictured on the right and their names are Joshua, Aditya, Hari, and Wen (top L-R), Navya, Nikita, Asparshita, Mehnoor, Divya, Aafreen (sitting L-R) Rahmaa, Ridhaan, Prachi (not in the picture).

8M Assembly Congratulations to Holly’s year 4/5 class for presenting at assembly last week.

Christmas is here… Thanks again to the Goodwood Traders Association for the fabulous Christmas display on our fence. The wreaths were made by students in 13N, 3M and 8m and students at St Thomas Primary School. We also have put up a Christmas tree in front of the gym . Thanks to the Student Ambassadors who have

helped set this up. We hope our whole community have a fabulous Christmas break!!!
