HDMI dongle
A wireless gateway to video, music, photos and apps
Instead of making different apps for smart TVs , developers can make an gadget that works with smart TVs and do all the works and that is - Chromecast
All it needs-a simple line of codes to add chromecast support to apps and it’s possible just because of chromecast’s open SDK
What is Chromecast?

The Google Cast SDK help developers to
handle "second-screen interactions"
Two components: a sender app and a
receiver app. Uses APIs provided by the
SDK
The sender app : a vendor's existing
Android or iOS mobile app, or desktop Web
app
Under the hood, sender apps can detect receiver
devices on the same local network,
establish a secure channel, and
exchange messages.
Supports: MPEG-DASH, HTTP Live
Streaming, and the Microsoft Smooth
Streaming Protocol.
The receiver app : Web app executing in
a Chrome browser-like environment
resident on the cast receiver device.

Dial Protocol
Chromecast uses the DIAL (DIscovery And Launch) protocol, co-developed by Netflix and YouTube, to search for available devices on a WiFi network.
Tasfia(201414042)12
Operating system
Chromecast is running a simplified version of Chrome OS.
Many developers the device is more Android than ChromeOS.
Google lists Chromecast operating system updates on the Chrome Releases blog.
As with Chrome OS devices, Chromecast operating system updates are downloaded automatically without notification.

Supported Apps
Asif(201414043)23
There are well over 100 apps and games available across Android, iOS and Chrome that are compatible with Google’s new Chromecast streaming stick.
Google opened the SDK(Software Development Kit) to all developers on February 3, 2014.
Google improved the SDK's reliability and accommodated the developers who sought a quick and easy way to cast a photo to a television without a lot of coding.Google made the SDK a part of the Google Play Services framework, thereby giving users access to new apps without having to update Android itself.
Now chromecast supports a wide range of apps such as-Netfix,HBO GO,Hulu Plus,Pandora,Youtube,Crackle,Rdio,Google Play Movies & TV,Google Play Music,Songza,Red Bull TV,VEVO,Plex,PostTV,ViKi,BBC iPlayer,RealPlayer Cloud etc.

Release & Review
On October 19, 2013, the Chromecast mobile app was released outside of the US for the first time.
Nilay Patel of The Verge gave the Chromecast an 8.5/10 score in his review, saying, “It seems like the Chromecast might actually deliver on all that potential, but Google still has a lot of work to do”.
David Pogue of The New York Times praised the device for its $35 retail price, saying, "It's already a fine price for what this gadget does, and it will seem better and better the more video apps are made to work with it.“
Gizmodo gave the device a positive review, highlighting the ease of setup and sharing video. In comparing the device to competitors, the review said, "Chromecast has plenty of potential given that its SDK is just a few days old."
Chromecast was made available in the US for purchase online on July 24, 2013.

Conclusions
While there are plenty of alternatives out there to make a television smarter, Chromecast is one of the most affordable yet functional.
What it lacks in apps now is made up for by its support for browser tab sharing.
It works for both Android and iOS opens up its potential user base even wider.
With a little time, after it was released internationally, it became the new device developers can't ignore when making apps.
Its simplicity of use makes Chromecast a viable upgrade for anyone that enjoys streaming online video, music and photos.
Google has committed to launching the device more broadly & internationally with the intent of adding to the library of compatible apps, ultimately setting consumer expectations that every app will be "castable".
