Principal’s Message Resilience - Respect – Responsibility

Garden Club

Students have been busy weeding and removing unwanted plants from the front garden ready to plant our native garden. Last week saw some very serious digging to remove bulbs and weeds! Our next step is to research what native plants will be suitable for this area then we will be ready

to plant the garden in early spring. We are very grateful for the grant the P&C obtained through Cotton Australia and it will be used to purchase plants and put in some edging.

Staying Healthy

I am very pleased at the effort students are making to stay healthy. They have been practising good hygiene by:

washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or using hand sanitiser, at regular intervals throughout the day

o particularly before and after eating, and after going to the toilet

covering coughs and sneezes with ones elbow or a tissue

placing used tissues straight into the bin

avoiding touching one’s eyes, nose and mouth

not sharing food or drink, and

by not drinking directly from the water bubblers.

Attendance

All students are expected to attend school unless they are unwell. If your child is sick, they must not come to school. You must keep them at home and away from others.

If a student is absent for more than three days without a medical certificate, this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and followed up by the school in line with normal practice.

Dropping off Students

Thank you to the parents who are following our procedures for entering the school; it is

greatly appreciated. These procedures will remain in place for the foreseeable future.

Parents are requested to enter the school via the office gate (Moira Street entrance). If you need to see your child or a teacher, the staff will bring them to the office. Parents are asked not to enter the classrooms as we want everyone to be as safe as possible. Students should be dropped off and picked up from the Penney Street gate and we ask parents to wait outside the school grounds. Students will meet them on the school side of the road at the gate.

Routines will still be the same for students catching the bus, walking or riding a bike/scooter.

Journal of Events

If you have any photos of students learning from home, could you please email to [email protected] as I would like to add them to pages in our 2020 school magazine. Any of your reflections on the experience of remote learning would also be appreciated.

in the classrooms? K/1/2 News K/1/2 weighed in this week whilst we discussed this girl named: Goldilocks. Turns out we don’t feel that sorry for her. She entered a house without permission, ate all their food, broke a chair then had the nerve to fall asleep in Baby Bear’s bed! We have decided she is a naughty little girl!

Did you know there are so many different versions of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’? Well there are and we read many of them, even some different versions like ‘Goldie and the Three Hares’. We decided to start writing our own stories. The plot is still the same but the characters and setting are

different. We’ll keep working on them so that we can publish our awesome stories.

In maths, we made bead kebabs. You can’t eat them but they are great for learning facts about 20. We also explored mass using balance scales. We estimated what could be heavier than a pencil and lighter than a dictionary. Next, we had to prove it, as shown below.

3/4 News Excitement with Spheros

Last week, students in 3-6 had the opportunity to learn and play with Spheros. A Sphero is an undeniably cool, driveable, programmable and engaging learning tool that transforms the way kids can learn, create and invent.

Students began by learning the basic controls of a Sphero and how to operate it. They needed to understand how to connect their Sphero to their iPad using Bluetooth and how to drive correctly using the ‘aim’ tool.

Once students were familiar with their robots they were challenged to create a short circuit for their robot to manoeuvre through. This was only a taste of what was to come… BATTLE BOTS!

To further enhance their capabilities of controlling a Sphero, students had to create a battle bot to compete in the first Goolgowi Battle Bot Competition. Each design was different and it was great to see kids designing and redesigning their robots to give them the best opportunity of winning. It was an awesome afternoon of fun and excitement.

5/6 News Last week the students in Year 5/6 sharpened their persuasive writing skills. We discussed how the language used in persuasive texts needs to be carefully chosen in order to convince our audience. We worked hard to create a sizzling introduction that would hook our readers and persuade them.

Dog are better than Cats - Sizzling Start by Jordon Williams

Can you resist walking in the door after a long day at work and your adorable puppy leaps into your arms and you don’t pat it? Well I know I can’t. Cats’ poop inside, eat heaps of food and then leave. With a dog this will never happen. They sit with you, never leave and eat almost anything. Cats tear up your lounge carpet and don’t play with any toys you buy them. Dogs on the other hand leave a little bit of fur and play with any toy they can find. Now do you realise the better pet to buy?

Cats are better than dogs - Sizzling Start by Joshua Jackson

Have you ever had a small cat curl up on your lap purring, making you not want to

move and fall asleep letting all your thoughts melt away? Well I have and that’s one of the reasons why I certainly believe cats are better than dogs. Cats are far more loyal then dogs in every way. They’re easy to take care of because all they do is eat, sleep, drink, and look cute. They are funnier than dogs and thanks to cats, we now have YouTube as a platform.

Letter to the principal - Sizzling Start by Jewel Shaw

Dear Mrs Young,

Have you ever seen a jumping pillow before? If you have not there are many benefits to bouncing on one, it’s a wonder not everybody is involved in jumping back to health. Let’s forget for a minute that bouncing on jumping pillow is great fun and look at some of the known benefits.

Dogs are better than Cats - Sizzling Start by Annabell Liddicoat

They provide great entertainment. They don’t scratch the heck out of your furniture. Cats are so hard to catch and they get stuck in trees. I mean I like cats, they are quiet but they’re not as fun as dogs. Dogs are probably the most well-known pet and dogs have many jobs such as guide dogs, search and rescue and therapy dogs. Imagine a guide cat. I think the only thing cats are good for is make you rich on YouTube.

We had our own Lego Master’s challenge last week. Who could design and create the fastest car. There were lots of weird and wacky designs. Even some tears when things didn’t go to plan. One student made a total of seven different designs before settling on their final car design. There was so much to consider when designing a car. What type and size wheels? How to get the wheels to turn? Do you use elastic bands or a cog system? After much trial and error, it was determined that a cog configuration from large to small was the fastest. Mrs Liddicoat was very disappointed when her car, which she thought was a shoo-in was convincingly beaten by Charlotte and Josh’s and Jordon’s designs.

Year 3-6 Online Lego Session with The Brickman

This Thursday we explore LEGO with The Brickman, Ryan McNaught from the LEGO Masters Australia TV Show, who will be conducting an online session to share his experiences, favourite LEGO creations, building tricks and secrets.

Students will test their STEM skills of creativity and problem solving while completing a skill-based challenge. Students are welcome to dig out small amounts of Lego from their collections or search under the lounge for some blocks and then bring it along on the day to create! Each student will be working in

their own individual area to ensure no one’s Lego gets mixed up. It’s also a good idea to have some questions ready to ask Ryan.

The school does have Lego kits available for use for anyone unable to bring some along.
