Mark Your Calendars! It was announced that the 2022 International Rally will be July 23-29 in Fryeburg, Maine.
Just a hop and skip from Kansas City. Several Club Members have already signed up.Please go to AirstreamClub.org/Fryeburg for more information.
Maria and I just returned from an 18-day RV trip to Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri, which included seven days at the 64th Wally Byam Airstream Club, International Rally in Lebanon, Tennessee. We are still trying to process all we’ve done in that time, including both the Rally and the additional stops getting there and coming back.
The trip was great. Regarding the Rally, it was announced that around 750 Airstreams attended. A robust number. MO-KAN attendees included: Kay Corder, Rick & Christine Embers, Lee & Joyce Cantrell, Ed & Jill O’Connor, Julee Shields & Bud McFie, John Bennett and his brother, Larry (they look like brothers), Rachel Payne & friend Dee Genacci, and of course Maria & myself.
(More reporting from the Int’l Rally and the rest of John and Maria’s trip continues on page 3)

Larry & Linda Poagevisited DJ’s RV Service in Adel, IA, where they had a Sealtech Exterior Leak Test done on their 2004 Airstream.“We had no visual leaks, but since our Airstream is 17 years old, we felt that the seals should be checked. We were very

impressed and had very few places to seal - such as the awning attachment and door lock.”
“Scott Jensen has previously worked for an Airstream dealer and is very knowledgeable about Airstreams. He can repair about anything. We would recommend him highly! Plus, we enjoyed our daywith Scott & his wife, Jodi.”
This blue-tubed, air-pressure device on the inside of the
camper helps identify leaks on the outside. If you see bubbles
around a seal, you know you’ve found a leak!

President’s Message (Continued from page 1)
The Rally had something for everyone -
every day. Feel like an early-morning
bike ride? Each day at 7 AM, a group of
about 30 riders peeled off about 10-
miles, turning around after stopping briefly at a local donut shop. Maria and
I rode three times. (Only one flat tire.)
Like Yoga? Each day at 7 AM there was the Yoga Stretch. Think
your dog or cat is the prettiest, most well-behaved or has the best
trick? The Tuesday Pet Show made the determination! (There was
a lot of drama there, man.) Also, I never saw so many Easy-Starts
getting installed on so many Airstream air
conditioners for the BoonDockers. Chapel
and Meditation, Carpentry, Fiber Arts,
Caravan Rally, Region Officer training, Ham
Radio, a 60’s dance, Region 8 breakfast,
Awning info., Cooking in Airstreams, Adult
CPR, Folk Music Jam Sessions, SkyMed Wine
and Cheese, RV Solar training, happy hour
at Julee and Bud’s and much, much more. If
you wanted to be active and informed on anything
Airstream, the Rally was the place to be.
For me, the most moving and memorable aspects of a
vacation are those times when you think you know
what will occur, but the actual event goes past that
and not only grabs you by the gut but also grabs you
by the heart. That happened with me during the
Wednesday evening Band Concert. Who knew that
the Airstream Club has a Concert
Band? And man are they good. They practiced less than a week.
The thirty-six musicians playing eight
songs and ended way too soon for
me. Bobby Taylor’s solo playing
“Gabriel’s Oboe” was very moving
and earned a standing ovation. The
Club is truly lucky to have so many
professionals willing to share their
talents.

We’ve been back now for two days and I’m still
downloading. The rest of the trip included:
Bardstown KY, the Bourbon Capital of the World,
Next stop was Greenbrier Campground in Gatlinburg, TN. I thought this was one of the best
campgrounds I had been in. Very clean, well maintained and loaded with amenities, including an
adjacent swimming hole within a stream that flows along the property. It was constantly occupied
by children and adults. We took two driving tours through The Great Smoky Mountain National Park in our three days there. One to Cherokee, NC and one to Cades Cove.
location of a prior International Rally - and home of “My Old Kentucky
Home.” The Cantrells and we stayed at My Old Kentucky Home State
Park and attended the Stephen Foster Play—he wrote the song that’s
now the Kentucky State Song. Maria and I also toured the Louisville Slugger Museum, rode our bikes around Louisville and over the Ohio
River, did a bourbon tasting at Angel’s
Envy distillery, had a bourbon flight at
the 1779 Talbott Tavern (the oldest
bourbon bar in the world) and toured
the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. I
would definitely go back to this region.
Missouri-Kansas Airstream Club – GOPHER NEWS Page 5
On the Cherokee drive, we parked at Newfound Gap and walked 100 feet along the Appalachian Trail. I know, I know, it wasn’t the entire 2,190 miles from Georgia to Maine, BUT, now Maria and I
can say we walked the trail. At Cades Cove on one of the trails, a bear crossed our trail about 20
feet from us. The thought ran through my mind—should I run, or should I try to “wrassle that bar”
Davy Crocket style, in order to save Maria! I’m sure if that bear got any closer, I would have made
the right decision.
President’s Message (Continued from previous page)
Next, we drove about three hours south to Chattanooga, TN and stayed at Harrison Bay State Park,
located about 15 miles north. We saw the Chattanooga Choo Choo and toured Rock City—the
same one that used to advertise on the tops of barns in the 50’s and 60’s.
The trip also included touring the Ryman Auditorium, seeing a televised concert at the New Grand Ole Opry, touring The Hermitage (the home of President Andrew Jackson), touring Belle Meade
(an historic mansion in Nashville) touring Mammoth Cave National Park just north of Bowling
Green, KY and touring historic Ste. Genevieve, MO on the way home.
See what I mean about being tired? I think its time for a nap.- John
