INTRODUCTION
AtGordon’swebelieveinabroadandbalancedcurriculumwithafocusonthetraditionalacademicsubjects.Thecompositionandproportionofteachingtimegiventorespectivesubjectsisgivenlaterinthisbooklet.
In the core subjects of English,Mathematics, Science andModern Foreign Languages (wherenumbers require it), studentscontinuetobeplacedinsetsastheywereinKeyStage3.ThisarrangementalsoaffordstheHeadofDepartmenttheopportunitytotargetdifferenttiersofpublicexaminationentryfordifferentsets.
BythestartofYear10studentswillhavechosentheiroptionsubjects.Thesenon-coresubjectsarestudiedthroughYears10and11andareterminallyexaminedattheendofYear11,alongwiththecorecurriculum.
Innon-coresubjects,studentsarepredominantlytaughtinmixedabilityclasses.Differentiationplaysanimportantroleintheselessonstoenableallstudentstobeappropriatelychallengedandtolearnatapacethatsuitsthem.
Formativeassessmentisattheheartofourcurriculum,withstudentsatKeyStage4receivingregularfeedbackinlessonsaswellas‘Tri-Weekly’and‘KeyAssessments’everyhalftermineachsubjectthroughouttheacademicyear.Theseeventshaveseveralfunctions,notleasttoprovidestudentswithfeedbackontheirlearningandtoinformtheir‘nextsteps’.Thishelpsstudents,atanytime,toanswerthreefundamentalquestionsforeachsubject:
• Whatgradeareyoucurrentlyworkingat?• Howdoyouknow?• Whatareyournextsteps?
AllstudentsatKeyStage4receivetargetgradesforeachsubject.Thesearedesignedtobechallengingbutachievable.
Thetriangleofstudent,schoolandparentisattheheartofstrongstudentachievementandthisiswhyourreportingsystemtakestheformitdoes.Webelieveintwocentralprinciples:
• ‘Littleandoften’isbetterthan‘alotandinfrequently’• Dialogueisbetterthanlargeamountsofwrittennarrative.
Theseprinciplesmeanthatwereporthome,broadly,everyhalftermatKeyStage4,witheachreporttypicallycontainingatargetgrade,effortgradeandworkinggradeforeachsubject.AttheendofYear10thereisalsoafullnarrativereportfromeachsubject,FormTutorandHeadofHouseasthissignalsthehalfwaypointthroughKeyStage4.
ParentsareactivelyencouragedtomakecontactwiththeSchoolwhenevertheywishandregularreportinghelpsfacilitatethisprocess.

Year9studentshavesomeimportantchoicestomakeaboutthesubjectstheywillstudyoverthenexttwoyears.Oncethesedecisionsaremade,theywillneedtoselectfoursubjectsincludinga‘reserve’fromthe‘options’subjectslistedbelow.WhilstthereareseveralsubjectsthatmustbestudieduntiltheendofYear11,therearealsomanysubjectsthatwillbestudiedforthelasttimeinYear9.Thepurposeofthisbookletistohelpstudentsdecidewhichsubjectstoselectas‘option’subjectsandwhichsubjectsto‘drop’.

TheoptionsubjectsstudentschoosewillbestudiedatGCSElevelfortwoyearsanditisimportantthattheyenjoythem.Withoutagenuineinterestinthesubjectitisunlikelythatstudentswill‘pushthemselves’tosucceedwhenthecoursechallengesthem,whichitundoubtedlywill,atvariousstagesthroughtheKeyStage.
Abilities & Skills
Everyonehassomethings thatwearegoodatandsomethingswearenot.Moreoftenthannotwehave littlecontroloverthis.Forexampleonepersonmayfindthattheyarenaturallygoodatonesubjectbutfindsanothersubjectquitedifficult.Thisisperfectlynormalandstudentsneed toconsiderwhere their strengths lie.The fact thata student likesa subjectdoesnotnecessarilymeanthatitplaystotheirstrengths!
The Future
Thesubjectsstudentschoosetostudyaremorelikelytoplayapartintheirfuturecomparedtothosethattheydon’t.However,thisshouldnotbeoftoomuchconcernasalmostoneintwostudentswhosuccessfullygraduatefromUniversitydon’tgointoajobthatisdirectlyrelatedtothesubjectthattheystudiedatUniversity.

Asyoumaybeaware,theDepartmentforEducation(DfE)andOfqualhavemadesignificantchangestothecontentandstructureofGCSEstakenbystudentsinEnglandinrecentyears.
New ‘reformed’GCSEsinEnglishandMathswerestartedinSeptember2015andfirstexaminedinthesummerof2017.ThemajorityofremainingsubjectswerereformdfromSeptember2016,readytobeexaminedinthesummerof2018.BySeptember2017,allGCSEsubjectshadintroducednew‘reformed’curriculums,withallexaminationsfromthesummerof2019onwardsbasedonthesenewspecifications.
What will be the key differences in these subjects?
Thenewexamswillbelinearinnature–thismeansstudentswillfollowa2yearcoursewithoutanyinterimexamsorassessments.StudentswillbeexpectedtostudymorecontentthaninprecviousGCSEs;theywillundertakeanincreasednumberofextendedwritingtasksand,forthemajorityofsubjects,assessmentwillbeentirelybyexternalexaminationattheendofthe2yearcourse.Assuch,therewillnolongerbeanyControlledAssessmenttasksorcoursework,withtheexceptionofsomepracticalcourses.

How will students be assessed
ThefollowingimportantchangestotheassessmentofnewGCSEshavenowbeenfullyintroducedacrossallsubjects:
• Introductionofanewgradingscale,usingthenumbers 1-9,with9beingthetoplevel.Whereperformanceisbelow theminimumrequiredtobeawardedaGCSElevel,studentswillbegivenaU.
• Theuseoftwotiersofentrywillonlyapplyinsubject‘whereuntieredpaperswillnotallowstudentsatthelowerend oftheabilityrangetodemonstratetheirknowledgeandskills,orwillnotstretchthemostable’.Mathswill continuetobetiered,withthefoundationtiercoveringgrades1-5andthehighertiercoveringgrades4-9.
• AllexaminationswillnormallybetakeninMayandJuneofthesameyear.
• ThefirstexaminationforthenewGCSEsinEnglishandMathswillbetakeninSummer2017,theremainingnewsubject specificationswillbeforfirstexaminationintheSummerof2018,withthefinal3subjectsexaminedinthesummerof 2019.Allnewspecificationswillusethe1-9gradingsystem.

Please ensure, therefore, that your son or daughter takes these exams seriously and prepares for them appropriately.
